Perhaps I should have said “fairly or adequately” compensated. Like a pp mentioned, the gap between the very wealthy keeps growing. And much of the wealth was obtained in the backs of those less fortunate ppl.

If it wasn't for the billionaires onboard this wouldn't even make the news. Tragedies happen every day. I'm amazed people get sucked into all the drama.

You know, I don't think it was the rich people on board. I think it was that it was Titanic-adjacent. Anything to do with that ship gets people interested. That, and that for a little while it looked like maybe they were alive and there could have been a 'miracle' story.

I'm not exactly sure how I proved your point, but okay. I still believe a billionaire donating millions is no better that a middle-class person donating hundreds. To me, donation status doesn't make someone a wonderful person.

Plenty of wealthy people never give a second thought to those with less ... so I do admire those who decide to voluntarily share their good fortune. However, since we don't know anything about what these five individuals did (or didn't do), it's all hypothetical in this conversation.

The fact that these guys are billionaires has nothing to do with how much it was reported or how if became a top story. If these were university researchers making a normal income, it would still have been a top story. We are all fascinated with exploration or anything that has a certain risk factor. It’s like a plane crash. thousands die a day globally in car crashes but it’s not sensational. News on a plane goes down it’s the top story for a day or two. The fact is this sub was a rarity their only a handful in the world that go to such depths. It’s the rarity of this that made it a top story not who is sitting inside of it.

My stepfather gets fantastic care from the VA. And pays nothing for it.

I agree with you and said something similar....this thing went crazy in the news because of the Titanic angle. And also, because three of the five were paying customers.....the adults being billionaires. If this was a dive off the coastal shelf or something......and it was just experts on an scientific expedition.....this wouldn't have gotten nearly as much traction.

The care my FIL gets from the VA has gone downhill over the last 10 years to the point where he is looking into using medicare insurance instead. Personalized care has been replaced with staring at a laptop and spitting out what it says to do given the symptoms they put in. He said the physicians rarely give him a look. They just do what the computer says to do. There is a lot more he has gone through with the VA recently that was sub-par, but it's too long to write on this thread. Suffice it to say I am not impressed with them.

I read today that the vessel probably imploded very quickly so the "clock is ticking" coverage was all for naught. It definitely caused a ton of news coverage.

Are you also thinking like a PP that this was just some conspiracy theory? Much of stuff is done after careful consideration and time spent, not impulsive "welp that's it".

In many search situations unless they have absolute proof or too much time has passed for realistic proof of life they treat them like search and rescue not search and recovery. Even if they felt the oxygen had run out it's not that they would have immediately switched to a search and recovery operation, it would have been a bit more as it was merely an estimate of 96 hours or if they thought they heard a loud noise that could be the implosion to just throw up hands and stop. Ethically speaking I would find it hard pressed that any single person would actually want them to not treat it like a search and rescue, it's an odd criticism to have and makes me question what people would be like if they knew the person missing (speaking broadly). I don't want to find out what some of you would be like if you knew someone went off on a boating trip never to be seen again, or a hiking trip, or a hunting trip or swept away on a flash flood or trapped in a fire or any other situation where just about every person out there would hope the search and rescue would continue on and on and on until so and so was found, hopefully alive.

Well, it was a "clock is ticking" story....until it wasn't I suppose. I have been hearing people speak out now that they believed the crew to have died when contact was lost, James Cameron being one of them. But....until that could be proved conclusively, I guess the decision was made to search the surface initially....and listen for sounds...etc, until a sub that could reach the Titanic could arrive on site. That happened yesterday morning and the debris field was found quickly.

I did question why the navy didn't release that they heard what they now know to be the implosion on Sunday morning, and so did James Cameron and others in that submersible/adventurer world....he said he got "intel" but that he wasn't sure if the noise recorded came from military or scientific sources.

Cameron also said that he'd heard stories about issues with the company, the material used to build the hull in particular. He also said that when the mother ship lost not just comms, but GPS readings and that the transponder failed...that he knew only one thing could have caused that.....implosion. He said he then watched "everyone running around with their hair on fire".....referring to the rescue effort, that he seemed to think was useless. I wondered why he'd kept quiet all week about this, only speaking after it was found....and now understand.

Rich people were taking trips in that Harbor Freight sub for years, most of us probably never even knew about this sub or the company. It took one trip gone wrong for this to make news. These weren't even famous names.

If any of these people were in a major auto or boating accident, we likely would never have known. But perishing in a Doc Brown submarine heading towards a historically significant shipwreck with a majorly successful motion picture attached to it, that draws attention. Edit: And again, the incredible odds involved in a risky craft in such deep waters.

Had it been non-paying researchers exploring the Titanic....I don't think it would have been quite as big. Had it been billionaires in the Mariana Trench....also not as big.

I totally agree not black and white but you quoted a poster who specifically said they didn't think it was a rich person thing and said you agreed with them and then had to make sure you added in about the billionaires (which by your previous comments we knew that's why you felt was most worthy for news coverage).
