submersible missing near the Titanic

Director James Cameron was interviewed on ABC News along with another professional Titanic expert (who was friends with few of the victims.) According the Cameron, he talked to people on his Titanic grapevine, and they told him days ago about the sound the Navy heard. So, those who needed to know, (like those in the united international search teams) and those in the know did know.

And it's likely the families were told too. Yet, they were probably ALSO told that the search would still continue in all directions and possibilities just IN CASE something else happened, and until they got definitive confirmation.

What if an EXplosion happened because the Titan hit the Titanic and the sound we heard was the Titanic? And the force of the explosion blew the Titan, intact several hundred feet away, and they were able to float to the surface?

This kind of rescue or recovery procedure didn't just happen in this situation. There was a building collapse in IA a few weeks ago and 4 people were still missing. The search crews kept looking until they located all the bodies. The same thing occurs during earthquakes and tornadoes, until all people are located. Sorry, YOUR tax dollars didn't get used in the ways you want.

MY tax dollars did get used the way I'm glad they did. :thumbsup2

I'm not looking to get into a tax dollars argument. All that I'm saying is that it's a huge piece of information that was withheld....for seemingly no reason at all. That's all.

Withheld from whom?

The public. Why wouldn't they have reported that.....when the coast guard has been holding press conferences all week reporting every other little detail.

I just think it would have been a useful piece of information, because every time I heard something about safety systems that would surface the sub, or banging under the water, or drift patterns....I always would have returned to the fact that the U.S. Navy heard a noise that was loud enough to have been the implosion of that submersible at the exact time of its descent/lost comms. All of the other info....would have been possibly a little hopeful.....maybe? But my mind at least, would always have returned to the fact that.....yes that's all interesting, but they've likely died and aren't suffering because they U.S. Navy heard what they did....where they did....when they did.

Why not? The Coast Guard broadcasted every other detail....all of the assets moving into place. The amount of oxygen left, hour by hour. The huge search area....the under water banging. Why not tell us that the Navy heard a noise that matches the level of an implosion of a sub that size....at the precise time and place of the descent. Just leave it at that...it's information. I'd argue it was the biggest piece of the puzzle....and they've known from the jump. There has never been any hope for those five people....they used the info to find the debris field.

It's probably helpful to remember that the Navy and the Coast Guard are bound by a LOT of red tape when it comes to making public statements. It's a slow moving bureaucratic machine that doesn't do anything very efficiently unless there is an immediate threat to US assets. This was a private endeavor. The Navy technically didn't need to tell anyone what they heard, and they likely needed to make absolutely SURE they didn't hear something more sinister. They told the Coast Guard, and at that point it was not their information to give publicly.

ETA: it was a Top Secret acoustic detection system. That makes it even harder to share that information publicly, which is why they didn't do so at the time.

The public doesn't hear about 99.9% of the things the military finds out. You (the pubiic) are not entitled to know about everything they do. This was not a national security issue.

They owe us that information why, exactly?

.us taxpayers who are largely funding this search and rescue.
Can I just say that I never once considered my tax dollars no matter how I disagreed with people taking on the risk of doing this? It's a humanitarian thing here because no matter how wealthy or how foolhardy this may have been no matter how careless the CEO may have been with the design at the end of the day 5 people lost their darn lives.

Weren't you earlier chastising people about not talking about the boat in Greece and yet you bring up tax dollars for this? I can't wrap my head around that change.

I get all of the replies to my comments. I still think that they should have included that information in the constant official government reports. So…agree to disagree on this. RIP to those who died…and condolences to the families.

Well, I don’t know that we’re owed exactly…just confused at hearing full on press conferences for days….relaying endless details about the search and rescue operation. Why not include the most important piece of information.

My tax dollars comment…had nothing to do with saving human lives. We’ve been getting official press conferences from the US Coast Guard about every detail of this operation…so…why leave out the most important piece of information….that they’ve known for days? Why withhold that information? They’re giving us that information, at least in part.. because it’s a government funded operation.

And with that….as I’ve said….sorry for the loss of these five people, particularly the young man who had a long life ahead of him.

You know I really don't disagree with your criticism of just what information was shared although I understand there's a lot more into the whys of what does get shared not to mention they really didn't have definitive information here. However, I just didn't get bringing up tax dollars. It seemed out of left field and not at all aligned with the earlier concern about people's attention towards the Greece wreck. It read cold to me when your earlier comments were more concern for loss of life. But I understand if it was just a comment made that didn't quite make it out the way you wanted it to.

The writing was on the wall when there was no rush to scramble Navy

It's unclear at this point who is on the hook, financially, for the search and rescue operation. It may not end up being taxpayers at all. They will likely bill the company first and foremost.

Looks like they are independent, but I believe the point was how the "local" media is more truthful & relevant? How do you see all of those stations being relevant to the other locales by saying the same things? Is that not a company-wide bias?

Also they have shareholders to impress too.
Sinclair broadcasting bought many small local stations, ours included and I refuse to watch them. They have an obvious bias and used to shove Bottom Line with Boris at us. Boris Epshteyn is putrid and that is all I needed to know about their bias. I'm sorry to have participated in the subject derailmant.

My only comments on this whole thing right now is I’m so sick and tired of all the online hate towards billionaires. Yes, I guess they could’ve spent the money for this trip and feeding the poor etc. but some of these people are making it out like billionaires of the most evil people on earth. And make no contribution to society. Sure there’s some bad apples out there like with everything but when I think of the ALDI family, for example, one the world’s richest families. They make groceries affordable and as an employer they’re very darn good have always been. And actually pay very well.

Possible I guess, but they may have issues there if what the CEO told David Pogue of CBS Sunday Morning last year is true. He told him that as of last summer the company was not yet profitable. Based on the design of that submersible, hiring of young engineers...etc, seems like it was a pretty bare bones operation with some window dressing thrown in.

James Cameron has had some pretty harsh comments since the accident about the CEO and the design of the Titan saying that while he also did not have his submersible certified, he was not taking paying customers to the bottom of ocean. He said he never bought the claims of the "hull sensor safety system" and that by the time those sensors went off it was just a warning that the submersible was about to implode. He said that the implosion would have been the equivalent of 10 cases of dynamite going off.

I saw a side by side photo of Cameron's submersible next to the Titan. Cameron's looks like a Ferrari....there was so much equipment in it. Then the Titan, with Rush sitting on the floor with his legs folded in a tube holding a game controller. It's just amazing that anyone ever got into that thing.

Mark Cuban is another billionaire who is doing good in the world. He’s making medications more affordable for countless people.

The Navy information on the sound of the explosion would be classified. It would take a while and require a good reason to de-classify and release that information to the public.

Well, I sure hope that they at least told the families. And, again, I don't exactly think it's a state secret that we have listening devices in the ocean to detect enemy subs. Because...of course we do.
