I just got done student teaching in Jan. While there I put in my paperwork to sub there upon completion of student teaching. Actually I put the paperwork in about a year ago. I kept asking about it as I am supposed to get a certificate, the secretary assured me it was coming. Finally before I left the school I asked again, where was it.....she never sent it out! :scared1:
ANyways, I just received a phone call saying that the certificate was in and I could pick it up. THe problem is...I don't want to sub there. I really did NOT enjoy my student teaching experience there. I want to pick up the certificate and put into sub at another school district. We have small towns where I live, one school per district so it's not like I would be traveling far. I just did not enjoy my experience there, I came home crying everyday and actually had a countdown calendar for my last day.
So what should I do when I pick up the certificate, what should I say to the secretary?

I'm not sure how it is in NJ but here, most school districts do not require that you have a sub certificate if you have a teaching license. If you do sub in a district that requires one, you have to go to the regional office of education to fill out the paperwork and pay for the certificate.

Subs also have to go through the hiring process including finger printing for a criminal background check before they can be hired even if they were a student teaching in the district. (they need to do their own check as the college/university was responsible when they were student teaching).

Sub jobs are all done through "Sub Finder". It's an automatic system that calls you when a job is available. If you choose not to accept the job, it will go on to the next person.

I would just go into the office and ask for it. I don't think that you need to have a conversation about subbing.

Since the school is so small the secretary actually does the calls, there is no sub finder so I am a bit nervous she'll ask about it, and she did call once at 5:00AM to sub, but I had my ringer off and did not answer.

I was already finger printed and everything, I am not really sure how it works in terms of having your license and sub certificate in this state, when I was in school it was actually "highly suggested" that we get it and that was why I put in for it and paid the $125.
There's actually a bigger district here that I could go on line and search the night before for a sub position. I guess if I a teacher is going to be out they go on this site and put their name in and then subs for that district can go on and look and pick when they would like to sub. Which would be good for me since I have a DD and no sitter, so on days fiance is off I could maybe sub.

In Jersey, all you have to do is contact the county BOE and they'll give you a Countrywide cert. I'll be doing this shortly as my town doesn't have permanent subs, but the town next door does.

I'd just pick up the certificate at a really busy time of the school day. - Take it, thank her, and let her get right on to the three people in line behind you.

Good luck!
