Stupid/odd question - keeping crayons "connected"

Hi - I am trying to see if they make this kind of product. My son LOVES to color, and I know bringing stuff along on the plane to do this with will keep him busy for a good chunk of the flight. HOWEVER - he has quite the tendancy to drop the crayons - A LOT.

Is there anything that keeps the crayons together/connected to him? I am envisioning something like one of those pacifier clips that you use for babies.

Anyone know of a easy way?

Thanks!

I've never seen anything. Can you crochet? If so, you could probably chain the crayons together.

Not really what you are looking for but...

At Michaels (and I think Toys R Us) they sell Crayola crayons that are triangular so they don't roll, this may help a little bit.

Go to ebay and search "crayon roll", people make cute crayon holders that roll-up that he can stick them back into as he isn't using them.

You can also take a can of playdough on the plane....make a big mound of it, and have him push the crayons into that...cheap, easy, and it doubles as another "activity".

One of the easiest things is velcro. Use a large fleece mat under the coloring pad, and put a band of stick-on hook-side velcro around each crayon -- they will stick when they hit the fleece.

Another possibility is O-rings from the hardware store, combined with ordinary string and a large binder ring. Cut lengths of yarn about a foot long and attach an o-ring to each end. Put one o-ring on the crayon and another on the binder ring, so that they can be used while tethered. The drawback to this method is that they WILL get tangled.

DO NOT BRING PLAYDOUGH...........my DH just traveled back from Chicago and the screeners are NOT consistent in enforcing some rules. Playdough is one of those things that looks too much like plastic explosive and they wouldn't let this poor woman bring it on. Her kids were devastated. Just think twice before doing it.

You could use rubber bands and yarn to tie the crayons together. Then loosely tie the other end of the yarn around some type of wrist band that he can take off and put on by himself. Just leave enough slack for him to hold the crayons comfortably when he colors.

Plus, it stinks.

No matter what you use, watch him! DS decided that coloring on the plane window would be a fabulous thing to do....augh. And I've almost blocked it out, but I do believe he drew just a smidge on the wall before I stopped him. :headache:

When I flew with my kids our rule was only 1 crayon out of the box at a time!! It really works for keeping the crayons in the hand and not on the floor.

If you sew, you can go to the Disboutique thread and on the first page is a link to instructions for the crayon roll up. It's very easy to make.

I always take just 4 colours so they are much easier to keep control of, and when dd was little they were always the really big chunky ones.

ok, then bring the playdough through the Philly airport.....we've never had an issue...go figure, gotta love the TSA!!! Playdough, in its origional contanier, has never been an issue for us. I've let them know that we had it, and offered it for inspection if they were interested.....

how about a glo doodle or a doodle pro? no crayons needed! :thumbsup2 they have them in travel size also, my dd3 loves hers...

Just a warning I think I saw on one of the news shows that playdough is not allowed on the planes because it mimics the molding material that can be used in explosives. Seems a bit extreme for playdough, but I can understand it might be hard to determine the difference.

thanks all! Not crafty in the least, but I think I am going to try my hand at making something! Even 1 crayon at a time doesn't work. They all manage to get on the floor/roll somewhere I can't get them.

Something to keep my mind occupied for the next 54 days :)

Couldn't you just dump them all in a resealable container? Seems easier than the box and doesn't involve being crafty.

What we do that might work for you.......

When we have a bunch of broken crayons, I get a cheap foil cupcake pan from the dollar store and we fill it up with the broken crayons. You might need to break them a little more so the all fit in. We play with the color combination so we have yellow with orange kinda thing.... Then pop them in the oven on low heat until they are melted. After they cool, you can just pop them out and voila! I am thinking if you put a ribbon or yarn into the crayon when it's still wet, it would dry and be solid with a string attached. I haven't personally added the string, but I think I'll give it a try, my kids always drop their crayons when we are in the van!

my dd is a terror when it comes to regular crayons but the triangle shape crayons are amazing and she never drops/loses them. sadly, a friend was playing with them and managed to break most of them but i'm fairly confident santa is going to bring her more this year for xmas - just in time for our trip on 1/9! :)
