Ok, I am new to the ebay world- I know they charge a listing fee, but if your item doesn't sell, do they still charge for anything?

Also, besides the listing fee, what other charges do they get you with- call me a skeptic, but it seems like by the time ebay and paypal take their "cut", there wouldn't be anything left over for me!

Thanks for any help!

You pay the listing fee whether it sells or not. If it does sell, you have to pay a final value fee.

I never post anything for less than $4. If it sells for that price, & they pay by Paypal, I still figure that I'm making more money than I would in a garage sale. If I don't think I can get $4 for something, I set it aside and donate it to the local fundraiser flea market for the animal resue organization that my sister volunteers for.

A few questions from another first timer. What is the percentage that ebay charges, is it based on the listing price and what is their final value fee percentage? If you have a paypal account, does this money just come out of your account?

Thanks, I am planning on starting to sell but need some questions answered.

Linds: The listing fee is based on the initial value you place. Under a dollar is .25 cents. Over a dollar but not sure up to what...maybe 9.99 is .35. One photo is free, more are .15 If you accept various options there is a charge. Final value fee is really small, but not sure how much it is. I get my Ebay fees just deducted from my checking account as like someone might their electric bill. They send a statement and there are lots of way you could take care of it; I just do it automatically.

PayPal also charges a percentage on money received. That seems a little higher.

Hi FirstTimetoDiz

While ebay isn't the best at making their fee schedules easily accessible they are available on their site.

This page does a pretty good job of listing the insertion and final value fees http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html

If you choose to accept payments via paypal they will charge a fee based on the amount paid. This page lists there fees http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-fees-outsidev

You should allows try to take into account the listing, selling and paypal fees prior to listing an item.

Hope this helps.

John

I figure that my fees are going to be around 25% when all is said and done. I sell clothing and it has low starting bids and I do single pictures for most items. Paypal charges .35 per transaction plus I believe 4%. I try to sell a bunch of similar sizes at the same time, so that I have bidders with multiple wins and they combine payments, that saves money and makes for less shipping time and effort. ~Mandy
