Students sold at "slave auction"...

If you recall, that was the hogwash the homeschooled kid who used to work for me gave me as the reason he was taught that slavery was the "colored's fault". Not a dig at homeschooling...just a big slam against HIS homeschool.

Lets for a moment even say we thought the "most" comment was true (I don't but for arguments sake)

I still don't think you could say it was all the "colored's fault". I have heard stories about parents selling their babies for drugs before. Now I agree that it is definitely partly the parents fault but it is also the fault of the person that will buy them, because if no one was willing to buy babies they wouldn't be able to sell them and I doubt anyone would argue that it was in any way the child's fault.

I am working an application to get our children a spot in the school of our choice, and was looking up some education quotes when I found this-

Education should be exercise; it has become massage. ~Martin H. Fischer

LOL! It reminded me of this thread! (and many others I read on the Dis)

We just got back from Ghana, West Africa on Friday and while we were there, we visited two slave castles(as they are called there). One was Cape Coast Castle and the other was Elmina Castle.

Ghana was one of the busiest slave trade ports due to it's location on the shipping routes. Our tour was guided by a local Ghanaian who gave a lot of history on the practices of the castle. According to him, the most common way for slaves to be brought to either castle was rival tribes. The area we were in was dominated by the Ashante tribe and they would capture other tribe members and trade them at the castle for supplies, mostly weapons. It was a survival mode for those that lived in the tribes.

Now, I would never say that it was the African's fault that slavery existed because it was the English and Dutch/Portugese that owned these castles and traded the slaves to other countries. It was those same people who supported the unfathomable conditions in which the prisoners had to endure. It is just an example of what a dark time that was in history.

We were able to visit the male and female dungeons, the condemned cells and the "door of no return." At Elmina, the castle church sat directly above the female dungeon. People would hold church services in one room while there were people being held right below them. I don't intend for anyone to extrapolate on the religious reference. We were there on a church mission trip, so this is not a knock on religion. It just demonstrates how out of touch the people were during this time.

I like that. I also would say that they waste way too much time on certain things. I think we have the Gov't to thank for that.

S Again, where did I say just telling them about the Holocaust was enough?

I never said you did!!!!!! You need to realize that this is a free flowing discussion and not just about you and your thoughts. You mentioned nightmares and it brought to mind the nightmares I had from seeing a movie when I was younger.....period. That was the segue. If I had just posted about having a nightmare from a movie, a later reader would ask why I was talking about that. After this comment I am done pulling anything from your postings on this subject as this seems to be an issue with you thinking I am attacking you and your viewpoint. This is an open dialogue about a current topic, not "let's pick on mhsjax".

I can't quote Sjaakie's post. I'm not buying the MOST slaves were sold into slavery by their own family members comment. Some? Yes, that may be so. Most? No way.

Well my country did transport the slaves and we have sealed documents that proves this. Just look for the VOC Compagnie.

How does that prove that MOST slaves were sold by their families? Which was what the post you quoted was doubting?

ETA - Okay, I think I miss read. I assumed that "sealed documents that proves this" refers to your country transporting slaves. Perhaps you meant that the sealed documents prove that most slaves were sold by their families.

Fine with me, but FWIW, I can handle being picked on. I never was in school, but my mom didn't raise a snowflake and she wasn't a helicopter parent. Man I just love saying that these days. I am really having fun with this.

One of the things stressed in the education courses I took was that the more senses involved in the lesson, the better the information is retained. It sounds like your teachers were able to do that very well.

I am a very strong believer in the effectiveness of exercises like the slave auction we are discussing in this thread. The kids who participated in this will never forget. It has challenged them, and those of us discussing it, to step outside our comfort zones--pretty effective teacher that can reach so far beyond the classroom!

Great post! I use re-enactments in my social studies classroom. When we study about the caste system in India, students randomly pick a role for the class day. A few are Brahman caste and get to essentially run the classroom that day. Most are various other classes with a few being Dalits (untouchables). They are told to stay in the back of the classroom away from the other students. We do a couple of things for 15 minutes or so, and then discuss the exercise. I am usually blown away by the deep connections they make to class society in India and in our own country with such a short role play.

I think we should stop this whole Naming and Shaming. Its history and behind us.
You cant live in the past and you know why?
We lost family in the second world war. They were killed by the Nazi's AND we lost a German family member that was also killed in the second world war.
Both deaths were terrible. Loosing a family member to the Nazi's was terrible and loosing a GERMAN family member who was only sixteen years, dying in Russia, buried "under a three" was also terrible.
There are always two sides on a story and yes this whole slavery business has also two sides but no ones wants to see the truth because it could hurt some ones feeling.

And yes these documents prove that "Chief Big Ugly " sold his family for beans and mirrors. Do you really think the crews of the ships hunted down people? These ships and there crews were traders and only interested in loading and sailing and not hunting. There cargo was stuff for the head chief and bricks for stabilization of the ship. Proved by documents.

Most people don't want to hear this but it is the plain truth and yes it hurts.
Just as is hurts to learn that most HIV patients in Africa get infected because the myth is that if you "use a virgin the man gets cured".
Terrible but true.
Look ahead, not back ,you cant live in the past or should we burn the Salem witches again?

Wow.

All I will say in response to this is that if we do not learn about the past and learn from the mistakes that were made, we are doomed to repeat it.

Cool. Good to know. So, if I am looking for a McDonald's and a drug dealer offers to sell me crack and I buy it, I can tell the police that I wasn't "hunting" down the crack. I was only interested in a big mac. :confused3

We learn but keep moaning about the past does not help. We have to look into the future and be positive.
Was slavery wrong? Yes of course but again if their own family or tribes had not facilitated these ships the disaster would have kept small.

Maybe unbelievable but now a days we remember our liberation with the Germans. My mother could only survive world war two because a German soldier helped our family with food and medicine.
A soldier that was "crazy" because his wife and children( two, four and five years) were killed in the bombing of Dresden.

Now tell me should we prosecute these pilots or maybe their families that did bomb Dresden? After all they did kill innocent women and children and we should learn from the past.
There are ALWAYS two sides on a story and just looking at the side you like does not tell the whole truth.
Look ahead not back.
