Massachusetts has a program called "Coast Sweep". For as long as i can remember in our small cape cod town, each 6th grade takes a public beach and cleans it. It is quite a lesson. They bring the trash back and separate it, counting cigarette butts (in the thousands per beach) to condoms...yes, they use rubber gloves for the clean up, to hypodermic needles. The last two items are actually handled only by adults.

I volunteered my time for each of my three children and was always amazed at the amount and kinds of trash they found.

Glad to hear it is happening elsewhere.
