Stroller as a wheelchair and Disney stroller rental?

It looks like my youngest (5yrs, ~46", ~40lb) might still be recovering from some minor medical issues during our next trip, and may need to use a stroller as a wheelchair. Of course, we haven't used our stroller in a year, so we donated it.

If we rent a disney stroller, do we need to get a new stroller-as-a-wheelchair tag each day or do they have some way of managing that with a multi-day stroller rental? Can I get the tag from a blue umbrella, or just guest services? Depending on how he's doing in the week before we leave, an offsite stroller might end up being the better choice, but I'd like to know my options!

I'd be glad to take advice on the best rental strollers for taller kids, too.

If you are renting a stroller in the parks, you will need to get a Stroller as Wheelchair tag every day (or if you leave the park and they don’t hold the same stroller you rented for you). The tags are like airline luggage claim tags - a strip that is placed around a stroller part with adhesive that sticks the 2 ends of the strip together

Yeah, the distance from bus to stroller/wheelchair rental can be too much for some kids with limited mobility. Not to mention having to go uphill and/or waiting in lines in some spots. (I speak from experience before my mom let me buy my first wheelchair that we took to Disney.)

Also, if renting in the parks, the strollers cannot leave the park so you'd have to carry the little one until you got to the parks.

Yes, of course. I've been carrying him since he was a tiny baby, and I'm pretty capable for those distances. I don't like babywearing in the queues because there's a lot of up and down (for height checks and loading) with non-ideal ergonomics and I always feel rushed. It's an overuse injury waiting to happen.

I'm currently fingers crossed that things will improve so a stroller makes for a better trip rather than an in-line necessity. If I can pick up the tag at any blue umbrella I'll probably wait and see how things unfold.

You don't mention transportation so I just wanted to point out the lack of parking lot trams at some parks. The tram is back for MK, and AK; still no tram for Epcot or DHS.

There are quite a few companies that rent strollers and will deliver the stroller to your hotel then you can have the same stroller for the length of your trip.
Or maybe check some of the second hand shops in your area and buy a used one

I'm assuming you are flying, so you have that distance to think about too.

Also, if he is recovering, you don't want to slow down the healing or even set it back and be force to spend more time at resort.

If you buy or rent a stroller, check the height and weight. Those are listed in the item description. There are strollers that go up to 48 inches and 50 pounds, but many are for babies/toddlers and have much lower limits

I'd try to borrow one, if nothing else for the airport walking. I bet a local mom has exactly what you need, then you can get it tagged once.

This was going to be my suggestion. The companies will deliver right to the hotel and you get to use the same stroller for the length of the trip, which means you only need it tagged once.

I would recommend renting a city mini gT from an offsite company so you can just get the tag once for your entire trip. We’ve only ever gotten the tag from guest services (not blue umbrellas). The waits at guest services each morning can really eat up time I presume you’d rather spend in the park.

WDW rules do specifically state “single rider.” How well that may be enforced for a situation like yours is anyone’s guess. Just be aware that the child might not be allowed to ride on grandpa’s lap in the wheelchair.

Honestly -- for a 5-yr-old I'd just spring for a cheap umbrella stroller and use that. Assuming it will meet your son's needs. They can be picked up for as cheap as $20-$35 for a no-frills simple umbrella stroller. Most indicate max weight at 40-45lbs, and honestly it isn't going to break if the child is just a few pounds heavier. Easily folds and carries onto transportation, or fold it up and leave it in the corner of your resort room if not needed.
