Strep throat will not stop us.

When you're sick, if you're having symptoms, then you're still contagious. Antibiotics don't change that. I had strep throat a couple years ago and I ate garlic all day (garlic has antibiotic properties) and the white patches in my throat and the soreness was gone the next day. I hope he's better for your trip!! Have fun!

Where do you get your info? This is not true. Once on antibiotics for 24 hrs, you are no longer contagious. If this was not the case, schools wouldn't allow kids back to school until the child had no more symptoms. Also, strep responds very quickly to antibiotics and kids start feeling better very quickly. I would not postpone a trip because of strep.

I'm not saying to cancel but please remember that if your child starts complaining even when on antibiotics to get them checked again. My daughter, and most recently a classmate of hers, tested positive for strep while already being treated for days on antibiotics fo strep. Sometimes the antibiotics don't do well in clearing it.

OP - hope you guys have a great trip and your child is feeling great.

Just hope no one else gets it. You or your husband could have already gotten it since symptoms can take 2-5 days to show up. When we have had similar circumstances, MD has given prescription, "just in case". I'm a RN so I know about antibiotic resistance, but strep as an adult is much more painful than it seems to be for kids.

My dd9 went to the dr Thursday with the only symptoms being a sore throat and dizziness. It was strep. The dr told my dh that since she had no fever she could go back to school yesterday because she was not contagious. She went to school yesterday and was feeling fine. By last night and all day today she seems miserable but now her asthma has kicked in.

As a kid I had a strep infection that would not go away, even after a week on antibiotics. I felt better, but it came back after I finished my medication. Since it came back, I'm guessing I was still contagious (especially since my neighbor-friend came down with it after visiting me on the 7th day). Back "in the day" our school district asked us to stay home until we finished our antibiotics. I missed over two weeks of school that month!

Don't forget to change toothbrushes. Strep can live on your toothbrush for a long time. You can reinfect yourself after antibiotics have run their course.
