Strep throat - how long til better?

We're battling strep in this house on DS13 - had it 3 times since November & today guess what, his throat is sore again & he feels warm. The doctor said one more time & we'll discuss taking his tonsils out - I had never heard of doing that for strep - has anyone else? He's been on 3 different antibiotics - and sometimes he felt better within 12 hours of starting them (after a good night's sleep), this last time he still felt awful 24 hours after starting them.

On another note- did they actually test for strep? It's going around our school like crazy, so some of the docs aren't even testing for it, they're just treating as if it were strep. DH went to the doc with DS13 back in November & she treated them both as if they had strep, but didn't actually run the test. DS13 got better, DH got worse. I'd never seen the man so ill in 26 years. I sent him back, she tested for strep & it came back negative. He had the same symptoms - severe sore throat, aches & pains, lethargy, etc. They did some blood work & here DH had mono! So if she continues to get worse, make sure they did run the strep test to confirm that's what she has!

Tara, both of my daughters had their tonsils out due to repeated strep. My oldest(now 15) had strep about 13 times in one year when she was in K and 1st grade. She would vomit non-stop from it also and had to get the shot in her butt a couple of times:scared1: Then my 12 year old was getting it over and over when she was in K and 1st also. i think she had it about 8 times in a year. The Dr told me that the strep was actaully living in their scarred tonsils so they were never really getting rid of it and it was not good for them to be on almost constant antibiotics. I hope your ds feels better and can escape having his tonsils out.

Both of our kids had strep throat last summer. Ds was better shortly after starting antibiotics. It took dd longer to show an improvement. Our strep was lousy timing (who wants to be sick during the summer?) because we had to reschedule dd's camp session.

I hope your dd is feeling better soon.

My DS has had it twice. The first time, he was better within 24 hours of taking the antibiotic. The second time, he was feeling worse. Turns out he had developed a virus on top of the strep. It was a loooonnnggg week. :sad2:

I have one dd who had strep a lot but always felt better once the antibiotic kicked in. She was one who never really felt sick, just a sore throat and low grade fever. DS on the other hand..he would get really sick really fast. Throwing up, fever, sore throat etc. Generally by the time he got antibiotics, he was already not eating or drinking. He always felt worse the next day and I always believed in had to do with the antibiotic on near empty stomach. Once he started eating/drinking a little better then he started to feel better.

So this may be your childs case...once she gets some fluids/food in her she will probably feel a lot better!

Thanks again for all the sympathy and advice. It really made me feel better - and sorry for those who have had to deal with it repeatedly. At least my DD never threw up :scared1:. I'm happy to say that she's feeling much better this afternoon and ate a huge meal today (she's feeling a little bad now - probably over did it, but she was excited to be feeling better). So far nobody else has it and I'm hoping we'll be done with this and can start packing for our trip :cool1:.

I hope he feels better in time for his party .

Thank you. He was feeling much better today and had a great time. He was so sick yesterday, 103 temp and vomiting, so I was skeptical.

Hope your daughter is feeling better too.:goodvibes
