My son has been diagnosed with ADHD but is not presently on medication due to the history of Tourette Syndrome on his father's side. I have not been able to find medication that does not warn against being taken by people who have a history of TS. However, I do not know much about Strattera and I wonder if anyone 's child is on this. I don't have problems with my son at home; however, his school work is beginning to suffer. He will be in fourth grade next year and if there is something out there that might help him I obviously want to give it a try. However, the possibility of TS being brought out from the medication lingers in the back of my mind. Does anyone know of any children taking other prescriptions for ADHD with a known history of Touretttes?

My child just started on Strattera about a month ago. She is dyslexic and very mildly ADD and so far it has worked out great. You start out with 25mg for 4 days and then go to 40 mg for the next 14 days then go to desired dosage. It takes about 2 weeks to get into the system and stays in the system 24 hours a day. It is not a stimulant, is not addictive and does not require a new prescription each time like most ADD meds. My daughter does not tolerate medications very well but has no problem other then being a little sleepy until we go the dosage correct.

My daughter is on Strattera. She has been on it since Jan. 4th. She is doing very well on it w/ no side effects other than sleepiness sometimes. She is dx. ADD & BP. My son started on the Strattera at the same time and was taken off of it because all his impulsive/hyper behavior came right back. My son is dx with. ADHD, BP, OCD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and others. Our pdoc told us that he is seeing with his patients that the ones who are ADD are doing better on the Strattera than the ones with ADHD. My son is back on his Adderall XR and doing great! I am not sure off the top of my head if Adderall XR should not be taken by someone with TS but I will check all my info and getback to you. I will also check other meds too. I do know that alot of meds will same not to take if you have such ~n~ such but it might not affect all. Unfortunately, most of the time it all comes down to trial and error with meds.

The dosage of the Strattera depends on the patients weight. The usually dosage is 1/2 what they weigh.

if Tourette's runs in the family and your DS is showing symptoms of ADD/ADHD it is very likely he has been misdiagnoised and actually has Tourette's or OCD (which Tourettes is now thought to be the way OCD presents itself in some people).
