Heard good things about it. Is it worth watching? I love a good mystery but am not really a fan at all of dark shows. Is it that dark? Darker than a House of Cards or How to Get Away with Murder? Thoughts? Thanks!

It's more like ET, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Goonies. Very 80's throw-back sci-fi, mystery.

Ditto. Stephen King tweeted that watching Strangers Things is like watching Stephen King's Greatest Hits.

TBQH, it's not my favorite genre -- I never watched any of those huge SK movies in the 80's/early 90's -- but it's compelling and well done. Wynona Rider's character drew me in the first episode and was probably the primary reason I finished the series.

My friend has been bugging me to watch that show... If it's similar to anything Stephen King than I need to start watching!

I loved it. I imagine it really depends on your definition of "dark". Personally, I find shows like "House of Cards" or "How to Get Away with Murder" much darker than shows like "Stranger Things". In fact, I actually don't like watching shows like "House of Cards" because it seems like everyone's always lying and betraying each other and plotting behind each other's backs and acting cruelly toward each other. It just wears me down and makes me feel depressed about the world and humanity in general. I don't like walking away from a series thinking, "Wow, the world really is full of awful people."

"Stranger Things" may have a scary monster and a handful of 'bad guys', but by and large the average person in that show is a decent human being who can make mistakes and behave badly, but whose motivations are easy to understand. And some of them even try to make amends when they realize they've hurt people.

So, for me, it was a much lighter, more optimistic show than "House of Cards". Even if not everyone makes it out alive. :)

Watch it for dustin's one liners. The kids hilarious. I'm not a fan of sci fi, x files/other dimension stuff but I love this show. The music alone is a reason to tune in. Watch it and tell.us what you think.

LOVED it. We binge watched it over 3 nights. To me it was total Goonies... it was so good. Dustin is my favorite character, and Wynona Ryder was fabulous!! I can't wait for the next season!

It's a good show. They nailed the 80's vibe. It's definitely more sci-fi than dark and worth checking it out.

Sounds neat! Thanks for all the responses! Gonna give it a try this weekend.

Yeah, I saw the series described as three movies in one: A) At the adult level it's a conspiracy theory movie, B) At the teen level it is a slasher film (but relatively tame, for that), and C) at the kid level it's basically E.T. Not too dark, but violent on occasion. Very 80's, as others have said. I'm borderline obsessed with the show. Would recommend it.

SOoooooooooo good! It was like The Goonies with a Stephan King kick.

It's fantastic! DH and I watched it and when it was over, we looked at each other and said "now what?" It was so good! We can't wait for season 2

I'm about 1/2 way through the second episode and came here to see if anyone was talking about it. Its definitely addicting so far, but to be honest I've held a pillow in front of my face every time I think they might show the "monster".

I didn't find it all that dark. For the type of show it was, it was probably more on the lighter side of the scale than anything. I'm not a fan of horror or gore. Suspense is great. Sci-if is great, but I've never been a big fan of dark. There were only a few ick moments over the whole series. I really liked that about it. I think I closed my eyes or looked away only once or twice.

What I really loved were all the references and nods to old Sci-fi movies and books. After finishing the series and catching every obscure reference, I felt like the biggest sci-if geek ever. But for me, those references were part of what made watching so much fun. It seemed like they used them to set up a lot of foreshadowing, so that made trying to figure out what was coming next a kind of fun puzzle where I could use the clues they hinted at to make guesses. I also really liked 11. Her character really drew me in. I thought the actress did a great job with the part.

It was great!!! Binged watched it a few weeks ago. Been telling everyone to watch. So reminded me of all those Stephen King movies.

Loved the show, probably the best series Netflix has done (and after The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt and Jessica Jones, that was a pretty high bar). I loved that it captured what being a kid in the 80's was about...the late night Dungeons and Dragons games with friends, riding your bike everywhere, and we ALL had a friend like Barb.

I really enjoyed it. I am trying to convince DH & DD to watch it. If they do I'm going to watch it again.
I heard there will be a Season 2!

DH & I watch House of Cards and really like it.
We used to watch How To Get Away With Murder but lost interest.
