Stranger Things?

Last weekend I watched the whole thing in one sitting.
I liked it a lot.
Not scary, just mysterious.

Loved the show, probably the best series Netflix has done (and after The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt and Jessica Jones, that was a pretty high bar). I loved that it captured what being a kid in the 80's was about...the late night Dungeons and Dragons games with friends, riding your bike everywhere, and we ALL had a friend like Barb.

I was Barb!

DisPop podcast just had a podcast on Stranger Things! I was reminded of It and Stand By Me as well. The show was renewed for season 2, and will have nine episodes according to Variety!

Does anyone know if they second season will feature the same cast and characters or will it be something new?

It was great!!! Binged watched it a few weeks ago. Been telling everyone to watch. So reminded me of all those Stephen King movies.

Stephen king tweeted "watching stranger things is like reading Stephen king's greatest novels. And I mean that in a good way"

This show is.so awesome.

Well, I finished it, and you all were right; it was awesome! There were certainly parts that were a little too dark for me, but I still walked away from it loving it and excited for the second season.

I'd also say that, while it was dark, it was dark in a more creepy, make-the-hair-on-the-back-of-you-neck-stand-up way. I'd describe it as very suspenseful, but again, I really enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommendation!

Lookout for a new Netflix series that is supposed to debut by the end of the year called "The OA". It is also supposed to be dark and mysterious. They used our house for filming!!! It was a great experience working with Netflix!! It will be 8 one hour episodes.

Resurrecting this thread because I just finished the series. I think the acting - especially El and the Chief - was superb. I am thankful it didn't go specifically for the gore, but I admit to cringing away several times when there was actually nothing to see. Excellent suspense. I think of the overly-quoted Hitchcock line about a bomb under the table goes off is action. A bomb under the table that doesn't go off is suspense.

It's amazing how invested I felt in these characters by the end. I am the target demographic (born the same year as WDW), so I was 12 in 1983 - the same age as the kids. And I do not think it is a stretch that the kids would make all those pop references - because I lived all of those references at that age. So much fun...

Scared the bajeezus out of me but I loved it! Those kids are all incredibly talented. And that wig on Winona may be the hardest working thing in showbiz :rotfl:

I loved it. I imagine it really depends on your definition of "dark". Personally, I find shows like "House of Cards" or "How to Get Away with Murder" much darker than shows like "Stranger Things". In fact, I actually don't like watching shows like "House of Cards" because it seems like everyone's always lying and betraying each other and plotting behind each other's backs and acting cruelly toward each other. It just wears me down and makes me feel depressed about the world and humanity in general. I don't like walking away from a series thinking, "Wow, the world really is full of awful people."

"Stranger Things" may have a scary monster and a handful of 'bad guys', but by and large the average person in that show is a decent human being who can make mistakes and behave badly, but whose motivations are easy to understand. And some of them even try to make amends when they realize they've hurt people.

So, for me, it was a much lighter, more optimistic show than "House of Cards". Even if not everyone makes it out alive. :)

No!!! I have 2 episodes left! I can't wait to see how it ends. And it is not my typical genre at all. But I was hooked.

Interesting. I will have to look this up. I NEED a distraction from the surreal reality of reality.

I have to admit, I'm struggling with this show. I'm...4 episodes in.
I'd been tempted to drop in after the first three. While I relate to the kids, the storyline did not seem like something I enjoy. It felt very...heavy. After the fourth episode I'm feeling a bit more positive. Confused, but that's the point of the show I guess. I'm being told it picks up, and I really hope so. Excited to learn more about Eleven.

Its very well done, I can see where all of the hype is coming from. I'm just fussy with TV shows. I like fluff, not creepy suspense. It was a bit too close to spooky ghost story at first.
I'll watch it though, because I hate leaving things unfinished. Maybe I'll change my mind.
