Strange bill from Dollar Car Rental?

I just got a bill from Dollar claiming I didn't pay a toll. I know we paid the tolls. Is this a scam? We usually take DME & don't rent a car. I will be calling them later....

I frequently make travel arrangements as part of my job. We're seeing this a lot more as there are many tolls that are now "cashless", meaning the only way to pay is electronically or after the fact. Could you have gone through a cashless toll? I would call the rental car company and get more info. They should be able to give you more specifics such as when and where, and then go from there.

We made sure to pay attention to the tolls because we had heard about the cashless tolls. Every toll we went through, we were able to pay cash/change. I will call them.

Was it a paper bill?

If by chance it was an email and not exactly from Dollar, if it's from EZ Pay or something like that, that's a phishing email. Don't click on it.

(I ask because it's really easy to mentallly fill in the blanks...get an email about tolls, and it's easy to fill in the name of the rental place when the message doesn't say the rental place...I did it myself the first time I got the phishing email, until I read and re-read it)

Was the bill for a date/time you would likely have been going through a toll booth?

The bill lists 2 times on the same day, 3 minutes apart. We could have been in the car at that time, it seems earlier than I remember being in the car. There is NO way we missed paying 2 tolls in a row! One says West Mainline Westbound. The other says I 4 connector I4WB Selmonws Port.

Do you have your rental car receipt/documentation? It should have your pick-up time recorded. You can search online on the Florida DOT page (or whatever they have that's similar) and find out where exactly those two toll booths are located. It doesn't sound like they are near each other, but I don't really know. If they weren't on your route, not near each other, whatever, you can protest this to the car company. Is it possible that these are someone else's bills and Dollar sent them to you by mistake?

Having heard of all the issues with tolls, I have started requesting receipts when I go through the tolls between WDW and MCO… just in case!

You have a valid argument with Dollar. One of those tolls is the Selmon Connector in Tampa which is between the selmon expressway and I4 while the west mainline westbound toll is on 417.

They are not even remotely close to each other.

Thanks everyone. I have called several times and the wait time is ridiculous. I will try them again tomorrow.

They had sent me a bill as well, but thankfully I had receipts for the tolls and had taken a picture of the license plate of the car we rented. They mixed up our reservation with someone else's, the rental receipt had the wrong make of car and the right license plate #. I'm so glad I took a pic of the plate and make of car. I will NEVER use dollar again after that fiasco. Plus they tried to give me a compact when I had reserved full size. Pretty shady if you ask me...

OP you said they it shows the 2 tolls you are being billed for are 3 minutes apart. That seems very strange to go through 2 tolls within 3 minutes. Good luck fighting it.

I got the same thing, with Budget, after my May trip. I KNOWKNOW I paid the tolls, I even brought a roll of quarters with me, so I could avoid problems at the unmanned booths. I was furious.

I was going to fight it, but caved and just paid. I did not care about paying the stupid toll twice, it was the penalties BUDGET loaded on top that ticked me off.

Scam. Last may I rented a minivan. After I returned, I get a $39.00 bill. They said I blew a toll on the pa. Turnpike near Philly. Ok, I didnt go near Philly much less the turnpike. I called and they doubled checked and they had a picture of the plate running the toll. They ask if I can prove which direction. I drove. Lol. I told them I have gas slips from i81 and i77. She said well that don't prove anything. I asked to see her proof. I want to see the picture from the turnpike Commision. She got a little snippy and I'm sorry, I was always told to not use language like that to a women but I couldn't take it. After I hung up her supervisor called me and apologized for the mix up and credited my credit card. It's funny I contacted the agent who rented the van to me. He said, oh, there is a department that handles that, we have nothing to do with it. This company handled more then one rental company. I kept everything from that exchange and I and the company I work for no longer rents from this company any longer. I'm sure it's just a matter of time till the next company tries it.

Was your rental from Dollar also? Now I'm getting very concerned about renting from them. They are the cheapest by quite a bit out of Sanford for our Sept trip, but it won't be worth it if they do something like this. We will be driving the car from Sanford to Orlando to Bonita Springs and back to Sanford.

no, it was enterprise. when you call this number (the toll booth scam complaint department) the recording will ask which car company. off the top of my head the only one I can say for sure was hertz.
I picked the van up on a Thursday, we left home at 2am on Saturday and arrived at wdw at 7:30 Saturday night. they claimed I ran the booth on sunday. I also told them I have a receipt from the hotel when I check in and she said that didn't prove the van was there. so, next time I rent a car, I guess ill have a timed stamped photo of my self with the car in the parking lot.:lmao:
someone told me it maybe that the person before me had put there toll reader into the radio and they must not have stopped in a toll booth? if that was true and the toll booth picture of the plate was true? popcorn::
I guess they feel left out since the airlines have all kinds of scams going on to make an extra buck. :lmao:
