My neighbor just called me to tell me that her friends son attends our kids school and he is the first confirmed case with the strain A virus. He was just released from ICU and is doing better. He is a 3rd grader.

She tells me that the school was notified. We'll see tomorrow if notices come home about this. Aren't they required to inform parents? I don't know.

I do know however that I am volunteering to wipe down/disinfect my DS kindergarten class every day. I don't know if his teacher does this now as a precaution.

I'm scared.

I can understand your concern. Hope it doesn't spread rapidly but cleaning everything over and over will certainly help.

Good luck.

Can you please tell me where you are located? You can PM me if you want. We live in Vermont and I am curious as to how close you are to us. I am scared too. Our Dr. does not recommend flu shots for otherwise healthy children. Besides, they have run out. Here's praying you and your family, and everyone else remain healthy.

Is "strain A" the flu virus that is going around?

Sorry to hear this :( I knew it was just a matter of time before it hit the New England area :( I hope the child with it recovers, and I hope no one else gets it.

I hope everything will be ok. Encourage you son to wash his hand a lot. I know that 3rd graders aren't into that sort of thing but it does help. It's 20 sec rubbing the soap through their hands. The trick I use with the children I work with is that they have to sing the ABC song, it's about 20 seconds long.

So far here in Florida in county i live in we have only had 1 case.

Not only wash but really force your kids to hydrate. It helps to run the virus out of their body much faster and if they get dehydrated that is what is putting some of these kids in the hospitals and causing some problems - granted not all the problems but hydrating is extremely important.

Not to be gross but our doc told us one time that drinking so much water does help to pee the infection out of your body.

I'm so sorry....I know you must be terrified.

I sent bottles of Purell with my children today and told them to keep disinfecting their hands.....one asked after school if he was wearing shorts, did he have to disinfect his legs!! They went through a good amount of the stuff today ...Hooray!

I talked to my doctor's office earlier in the week. They said it is in the area, they know, but they personally have not had one test come back positive, although they have tested a lot of people. I read a story on Yahoo that said perhaps the season will peak in December, and not the typical February....if that is true, then maybe it will start turning around in the hardest hit areas. It is listed as widespread in neighboring states, so it is just a matter of time.

Good luck......let us know how it goes. You all were vaccinated, right?

I never "heard" that, but every time I get sick or son does we drink lots of water. It kinda came to me one and it made sense that the more you pee, the more bad stuff you would get out of your system. FIL(who is a doctor) said I was nuts, but huddy does it now too, and he says it does seem to make him feel better faster. So I guess I must doing something right over his dad ; )

Great link My3kids! Thanks....

Lorix2, I hope your friend's son is doing better, he will be in my prayers.

One of my co-workers was just diagnosed with "strain A". He is about 50 years old and had to spend two days in the hospital for dehydration. I think he also got pneumonia as a complication as he is now on antibiotics.

CBS Evening News just reported 23 children had now died from the flu. But, one physician said she was more worried about people drinking and having wrecks over the holiday than about the flu.

A number of schools have closed due to absenteeism. Last year virtually all the children were out with the flu in my child's school and they didn't close....I bet if they had, the percentage of those affected wouldn't have been so high...With 2 children in a foreign language class, it wasn't really like a lot of new material was being introduced anyway.

We had flu shots 6 weeks ago. I herd a very small burb on the News about it and decided that day to call the drs and have the kids and I done.
DH still wont go and get the shot FOOL !!!

In my opinion, it is a small cost for him to help protect the family if he doesn't want to protect himself.

You know I never thought to argue that point !!!I will ask him again today. But my DH is 51 so he is to old for the flu mist.

thank you for the advice !!!

UPDATE:

I just spoke to my DS kindergarten teacher about what she is doing in the classroom to prevent germs. She told me that she cleans the tables and chair tops every day after the AM and PM classes. She always has because we have a child with food allergies in our class too.

Also - she told me that the sister of the boy who is sick is in her PM class and has been kept home all week.

She told me that her classes have been really healthy and she feels it's because she cleans so often. The other kindergarten class has had alot of sickness and we stressed that maybe she talk to the other K-teacher about doing the same cleaning.

Myself and a few other moms offered to come in before the christmas break and wipe down the classroom and each take some toys home and disinfect those as well. She really liked that idea.

So, I feel a bit better that she cares enough to do these things to help prevent sickness in the kids and herself.

We've all had our flu shot and hopefully it'll provide us with some protection and lessen the symptom severity if we do catch it :(

Take care of yourselves:D
