Stores With "No Public Bathroom"

If she is a part timer and she works different routes all the time how exactly does she regularly deliver the mail ? She has no reason to expect a troe where she occasionally delivers mail to allow her to use an employee only restroom.

Certainly I do know of places that have restrooms "for customers only". Many enforce this with a key, although I've seen employees who don't particular care who grabs the key or maybe it's hanging from a nail. I've also been to a few restaurants or bus/train stations that use tokens. I was waiting in one when a group of teenagers came through and asked for tokens. They weren't ticketed passengers (or otherwise had business at the station) and the station agent just said no you can't use the restroom.

I used to work at a store that didn't have a public restroom. I would get yelled at regularly by customers who didn't think it was fair. Like previous posters have stated, there are a number of reasons why customers aren't allowed to use the restroom. No means no.

I work at a Salon. We have a public bathroom. Sometimes its disgusting what clients will do in there! Shaving in the sink....which clogs it. Sometimes this couple goes in there together. Pee all over. Lady products on the floor.

When I worked at Coach our bathroom was in the stock room, I would never allow a client back there.

But I can see both sides. Vets should have one.

My company, a chain of convenience stores, has had public restrooms in all new and rebuilt stores for at least the past 15 years. Yes, they sometimes get disgusting. For older stores without public restrooms, the policy is they're available upon request. In practice, it's more of the manager in charge's discretion. Usually there is some employee working in the backroom anyway, filling the cooler, or performing other duties.

I never said she works part time. I said she is a substitute in a rural area. She works for several different towns on a regular basis, usually working 6 days a week. The route with the store that said no to using the bathroom is one that she often substitutes for.

I just want to know from all those that say "no" just exactly where is she supposed to go to the bathroom? We know our mail carrier and I would gladly let her in my home to use our bathroom and if I had a business I would also. We met her at a neighborhood party that she was invited to because she got to know several of our neighbors. We get fabulous service from her because she does know us. On a couple of occasions she has covered an extra penny or two on a slightly overweight envelope so we don't have a delay in sending or receiving. She goes above and beyond because we treat her like a person. Most places I shop have public restrooms. I don't see a mail delivery person asking to use the bathroom the same as a random person who comes in just to use it.

If she often substitutes on these routes, she must have her usual places to stop, if not she should ask the regular carrier. There may be a great place to utilize that she is unaware of. I know this doesnt help her but DH says some of the best places are the ones not a lot of people know about bc the place doesnt get gross...like on the PA turnpike he will use the bathrooms at the toll plaza, they are public but employees are usually the only ones using them.

We dont know our mail carriers at all. I always wave or say thanks if I am at the mailbox but I dont know them to allow them access to my home.

If you are on the road, you need to learn to anticipate your needs. DH drives all over so sometimes he is in an unfamiliar town but he tries to scope out places to go before he goes lol

@bdcp there are many things that could be done, there have been many suggestions made by PPs.

  1. Having a potty in the car
  2. Not drinking liquids when you know you are in a place which dosn't have restrooms
  3. Doing local research to find out where the restrooms are
  4. Using a restroom last minutes before going to a place where there are no restrooms
There is always this http://www.shewee.com/ Shewee a female urinating device specially for women who don't have access to restrooms.

Its basically about the individual person taking responsibility for their own personal hygiene and being prepared for the situations they find themselves. A grown woman should not expect others to jump to their needs just because they did not prepare themselves adequately.

Wow. For a bunch of people who tend toward the liberal for the most part. You know, compassionate, caring, etc or so a lot have said on other topics, you're a tough crowd. Remember humanity and tolerance? I'm a conservative and a big believer in personal responsibility, but I have a lot more compassion for this letter carrier than I'm seeing here. Sometimes you just can't "anticipate". And, I'm sure most of you women (I'm a woman) would just love to carry a potty around for your own use. It's one thing for a small child being trained, but for an adult woman, seriously?

While my two boys were in college, they worked in a local outlet mall in small stores that didn't have bathrooms, but the mall did so when people asked about bathrooms, they were able to direct them to the public one just around the corner. They were also taught to be polite to ALL who came into the store.

@bdcp well you would be surprised at what women and men do, who regularly are in this position. Like many PP's have said, many people do outside work or on the road, yet they have the wherewithall and wits about them to be prepared when they are in these situations. Its not about not having compassion, its about the person taking responsibility for them selves. Also as has been stated over and over in this thread, many times there are LEGAL reasons why uses of a restroom may be refused.

My regular carrier, absolutely. She could come in our house anytime. She has been our carrier for over 20 years and is fantastic. We chat pretty much everyday because I usually am pulling in the driveway when she is at our mailbox.

But the OP said her daughter was a sub. There is no way in hell that I would allow a stranger who knocks on my door to use my bathroom. As I mentioned before, our neighborhood is a target neighborhood for theft and one of the biggest scams has been people in legitimate uniforms knocking on the door, selling product and asking for a glass of water or use the bathroom. They are scoping out dogs, what electronics are in the house, etc. In the past year, the sheriff has arrested groups dressed as Century Link employees and ADT home security employees. The gangs are very sophisticated, even having vehicles marked as the fake company.

The sheriff sends out regular notices on how to protect our homes. Not allowing strangers in the door is one of them.

The OP also said this was a party goods store. I have never known one of these types of stores to be stand alone with absolutely no other retail stores around it. It was most likely in a strip mall or in an area with other stores that would probably have a bathroom, such as a grocery store or a restaurant. I also can't believe there isn't a single fast food or any kind of restaurant on the route that the daughter could have utilized.

I refuse to believe that there wasn't a single other option for the daughter to relieve herself. In my humble opinion, the OP was just mad that this particular store had the audacity to say "no" to her daughter.

The clerk at the party goods store should not have to compromise her job by allowing somebody in the bathroom when it is not allowed just because they are the mail carrier.

How did you come up with the clerk was not polite?

And you really believe that this Party Goods store was sitting out in the middle of a rural field with absolutely nothing surrounding it? I don't.

Just like your boys telling people to go to the public bathroom around the corner in the mall, the daughter could have gone to one of the other public places around the corner like a restaurant that usually has public bathrooms.

If there was a store policy that nobody can use the party goods bathroom except employees, I think it wrong to expect a clerk to put their job on the line and make an exception for somebody.

Now, if the party goods store was indeed sitting in a field with no other restaurants, fast food, grocery stores, public buildings for miles and miles around, then yes, I can see asking the clerk to make an exception. But party goods stores are not usually destination places that would survive being the only retail place for miles and miles around.

People have to hold it everyday and not just people who work outside...nurses, doctors, teachers etc, it comes with the job. Heck even retail. I am sure you will be glad of the surgeon who can anticipate his/her needs when you are under the knife.

My DH might ask at a place if nature calls but he certainly would not be bent out of shape if they had to decline. He would ask them to direct them to the nearest restroom. If they could provide that info, great, if not he is a big boy and would figure it out

I actually don't "tend toward the liberal." I'm conservative, but I would also like to think that I'm compassionate.

However, I do think more people should take responsibility for their own selves, & I do get tired of the "entitlement" attitude -

"I know the restroom's not for the general public, but you should let me use it because I'm special."

"I know what the rules are, but the rules don't apply to me."

Do I mind the OP's DIL asking the storekeeper if she could use the restroom? No. But, when she was told that she couldn't, that should have been the end of it.

Even though this particular party store was in a rural area, I'm almost positive it wasn't the only place around. I'm sure there was a fast food restaurant or a gas station nearby where she could have stopped.

Also, we don't know our mail carrier at all. I couldn't imagine her knocking on our door & asking to use our bathroom.

Having a "potty" in the car? Yeah, totally disgusting and not happening. I don't drive around with urine sloshing around and getting all over. :scared:
