Our family is travelling with some friends to WDW in late June. We are going to be staying at the Art of animation resort.

I have been to WDW a few times, but have never tried using Disney transport to anywhere except parks and resorts.

Do the free shuttles go to downtown disney? And, is there any "nearby" Targets or Walmarts that are within any distance of walking / Free transport from downtown disney? We will be arriving directly from Europe and we may need to pick up a few things that will either be not available or too expensive at the resorts or parks. Any insight or help would be much appreciated :confused3

There are buses from all the resorts to DTD. From there you can walk to a few stores. I'm just not sure what stores are in the immediate vicinity or how far the walk is.
You may be better off just ordering stuff from a grocery delivery service. Many of us use www.gardengrocer.com or www.wegoshop.com
Yes, there is a delivery charge, but they can get pretty much anything you need, including adult beverages, and it is delivered right to your resort. It can actually be there waiting for you when you arrive.

The closest store to DTD is Goodings and the prices are 5X what you would pay at Walmart. You can however as PP stated have things ordered and delivered. Or just take a cab from your resort to the nearest grocery store.

There is a Hess gas station across from DTD. They have cases of pop, water and beer. Snacks and so forth. And the pizza there is pretty good.
