Stop Spoiling Olympic Results!

Is it okay to talk about the Opening Ceremonies? After all, someone on the CB may have TIVO'd it and not watched it yet.

Get a life. You don't want to know the results, turn off anything that may convey information. That includes the computer. People are excited and write about things they are impacted by when they see it. Not when you see it.

This joint gets nuttier every day.
Of course it's okay to talk about the Opening Ceremonies, just don't tell us how it ended in the title of your thread. Some of us have money riding on the results.

Some rules are not documented, but followed nontheless. It is well established here that spoilers should be in the body of the thread and kept out of the title for those who haven't watched yet.

Discuss anything you want, but be courteous to others by leaving the results out of your title. Because it's such an easy thing to do, it leaves people with the feeling that anyone refusing that courtesy is doing it just to be mean. A thread like this is necessary to point that out to people who have forgotten that not everyone lives in their time zone and maybe avoid the bad feelings altogether.

It's a simple thing, but it goes a long way towards making this a "community board" instead of a "I'll do whatever I darn well want to and to heck with anyone else" board.

A poor internet connection has kept me from posting all day, but I couldn't let this rest. I am now apparently being accused of being the reason this thread is considered bad.

A look in any dictionary will tell you that one of the definitions for "rules" is a "standard practice". I stand by my posts. I certainly never claimed there were official DIS guidelines on this issue. This thread was not started about any one poster, it was about putting spoilers in thread titles. My posts were not flaming anyone, they were addressing the issues that were being discussed.

This issue has been addressed many times over the last few days (and many times over the last six years that I've been on this board) and most people are perfectly willing to keep the titles free of spoilers. Mistakes happen, but won't be corrected unless people say something - and while some do that more nicely than others, I think they have that right.

This thread was about spoilers, not about individuals - and that is what my posts addressed. I had no interest in the ice dancing, so I didn't watch, nor did I read the thread that was eventually referenced in this thread. That wasn't what this thread was about. I do watch other stuff on the Olympics as well as other tv events and have always appreciated the efforts most people take here to keep spoilers out of the titles.

I've been following this thread with amusement... but I just have to say:

I don't really understand what the big deal is in asking people not to put results in the subject line of a thread? Results in the body of the post is fine.... but how about leaving them out of the title?

I think that's reasonable, and I think some people are being argumentative just for the sake of being argumentative. But then again, what else is new on the Dis?

:cheer2: :cheer2: Great post! I'd give some credence to Obi's reply if it weren't from the fact that I seem to be getting most of the "blame" at this point and I have not flamed any teenagers.

Yikes! :duck: I'm on the west coast and I understand both sides. In a few hours people on the East coast will definately want to discuss the results from the ladies long program and I do understand that. Everyone has been waiting and anticipating this event for quite some time. The other night I didn't even need to get on the computer and had not even seen the ladies short program yet and my son was my "Spoiler" and blurted out the results. I just yelled "What the heck are you thinking telling me the results!" So, with that said, the bottom line is I think it will be in my best interest if we just stay off the computer entirely till after the olympics are over tonight on the West coast and also not switch around on the TV channels either because that is dangerous too. After it is over I look forward to coming back to the CB and reading all the opinions about the event.

Best Wishes to the Ladies in Torino Tonight! :cheer2:

I never said you flamed anyone.

The comment you made that --

There is a protocol here that expects people to be respectful and thoughtful of others. Every community has rules and this is one of them here.

-- implies a board guideline that does not exist.

Posting a spoiler warning in a thread title, inserting spoiler spaces, or altering the text color to blend in is a common courtesy that should be observed, but board members are not required under the DIS Guidelines to do so.

There are ways to fix a thread title that has a spoiler. Kindly asking the OP to change it or even asking the mods if someone can edit the title (in the event the OP is offline) is one way; blasting the OP or posting a request in large color all-caps with #@$%&$#@ as one of the words isn't it.

THis thread makes me realize why I don't come to the CB much anymore.

disykat - I don't think anyone has said anything to you about anything you've posted except when you posted that people were "filled with angst about such non-issues". You should have taken some heat for that, that was uncalled for. :confused3 Other than that, people are addressing other people and other issues, really not addressing you at all. :confused3

This thread, and so many others like it, are the reason I keep coming back. Where else can you find so much drama, and see so many people get worked up over such a trivial non-issue? It's like going to a family reunion without the potato salad that's been sitting in the sun for 2 hours.

LOL! :teeth:

I'm bored, what can I say, sometimes a little drama goes a long way. :teeth:

LOL, and that salad is what makes them all sick!!!

I can't believe this thread is still going strongly. :confused3 Or that I bothered to open it again. :coffee: Or that I am taking the time to type this.

Maggie, as so often over the years, well said, succinctly stated yesterday.

And good to see you, Maggie, AND Gina and Diane.   Nothing like a flaming thread to draw out long lost DIS'ers. :cool1: :yay:

goofysk8 (sure do like that name, cool name :thumbsup2), continue to enjoy the Olympics, the skating, and your own endeavors. And make sure to continue to visit here, it is mostly nice, but just as in RL, gets a little testy at times. :hyper2: And the folks on this thread too, goofysk8, they are good too, just voicing, their opinions, in a rather demonstrative fashion, again, sometimes like RL. Hang in there, buddy.

This is what happens when you're not working a few days, Dan. You read the DIS.

Nice to see you. Hope all is well....

Oh, wait....personal message. Am I still not allowed to do this?

Uh oh, I see the big giant hammer comin' round the bend for this thread. :teeth: It's probably past due anyway. :bitelip:

Howdy Dan! True, nothing like a thread of old timers flaming people for flaming people. LOL! :teeth:

Oh well. I imagine I'll be able to go back to work tomorrow so my DIS time is drawing to an end for the time being. :teeth: It's been nice to have some laughs and spend some time doing the ol' CB thing again though. I just wish there were more old timers around to have more laughs and less ol' CB. :crowded:

Because passive agressive shots at managment are so much better than flames. :lmao:
