Stop Honking at Me! and other Driving Woes

Today, I was sitting at the red light waiting to turn right onto a major highway. It's rush hour, tons of traffic so I sit there waiting for a clearing. You know, to avoid getting t-boned...

Car pulls up behind me and immediately lets out a honk. I was just about to pull out, but being my spiteful self, decide to just wait until the green light. Old man in his late 60s is absolutely freaking out. Throwing his hands in the air, yelling something, inching closer and closer to my car and honks again. Still, I sit (and honk back at him lol, oops). Finally, light turns green and I pull out onto the highway and accelerate gradually to the speed limit. I was sure he was going to come up to the side and flip me off. Nope, the guy went into the right lane and stayed at least 10 miles under the speed limit. He then proceeded to turn off a few minutes later into the McDonald's drive-thru. Guess he was hangry?

I wish people would stop trying to force people to pull out when they don't feel it is safe to do so.

What are your driving pet peeves/woes?

I hate driving in the city. I can't do it right and I get beeped at constantly! Because I guess I drive like a country bumpkin and let people merge in front of me, or stop for a pedestrian that is about to step into a crosswalk, or I stop at a busy intersection when the light is yellow because I don't want to stop in the middle of the intersection and gridlock traffic, and I won't block access to side streets/parking lots. I've been honked at for every single one of those "offenses" in the city which seem to me to be normal driving behavior--I've learned people have different expectations in the city.

People who are not paying attention and do not go when the light changes color, particularly in a turn lane. Green means go and no need to leave 10 car lengths between you and the car in front of you. If people just paid attention and followed the car in front of them through the intersection, I swear at least 25% or more cars could make it through.

And yes - I am in a hurry. Not aggressively so, but I don't appreciate people not paying attention and wasting my time!

My pet peeve is people who don't know how to or refuse to yield when getting on the interstate. A lot of folks these days don't even look to see what's in that spot until they get to the end of the ramp. I escort oversize loads and have seen some true stupidity out there.

At a four way stop one driver telling another to go when it is MY turn/right of way.

At a four way stop the person going north to south going but the person that should be going south to north waiting until they are through to go, when now it should be my turn to go.

I drive a "highway" road to work everyday. The speed limit is 60, people go 65-70. My pet peeve is people who do not pull into the shoulder to turn right. They come to an almost complete stop (also a pet peeve) to make their turn in a full speed thru-traffic lane. There have been so many accidents on this road due to this behavior. You can't slow down to 10 mph to turn right when people are doing 60 behind you!

Don't visit Miami if you don't like using your horn or having a horn used against you.

I had a horn blow at me 4 times before I even left the rental car parking deck on my first visit.

I felt special!

You will get a ticket here if you drive on the shoulder to make your right turn.

My new one is how cars rarely stop to allow you to back out of a parking space in a lot. Instead they beep, sometimes from the far end of the lane, far enough away that you could have been out of the space by the time they reached you, and swerve around you. They have to know you can’t see them till you are mostly out of the space and you don’t really know if that distant beep has anything to do with your backing out, but they don’t want anything to slow them down.

I have to see it, some people just beep at everything and cause all kinds of accidents, while some dont go when you have a chance, its never gonna be 50 free yards

Driving in any lane other than the right lane on a highway when you are not passing anyone. There is no excuse.
Why? I don't understand this. I know in Oregon when I was visiting they had signs that the left lane was for passing only. I have never seen such signs in California.

That's weird. I was taught to do this by my driving instructor way back in the day. I wouldn't say you full on drive in the shoulder, but when you are under 100ft from the turn, you ARE supposed to move over as far as you can so that others can pass you while you make the turn. I've been doing this for all 25 years I've been driving and see the majority of people do the same. Never gotten a ticket in any state I've driven in.

The exit I take going home from work has two right turn lanes, but you can only turn right on red from the far right lane (there is a large sign posted right there telling you this). I often get people honking at me in the left lane because I'm not going on red. Read the damn sign!
