Okay, I want to keep things light and fun, since that's the theme of this website. But after just returning from a wonderful week at the Wilderness Lodge, I saw one thing that really grinded my gears-kids tormenting the wildlife. I realize kids will be kids, and chasing the ultra tame ducks and rabbits is fun, but where the heck are mom and dad to grab these little ones by the hand and say, 'no, don't do that'? I found myself playing protector of the wildlife everytime were were at the main pool. My guess is the lifeguards are not allowed to say anything, and the resort management does not find this to be a huge problem, but c'mon parents, step to the plate and do some parenting here, please?

We were in room 1557 at BC (deluxe CL room), it was right near the quiet pool and lots of wildlife. We were shocked (and disgusted) one day to see a bunch of kids throwing rocks at the ducks! My dd told them to stop immediately and they just laughed. The parents called them because they were leaving but didn't say a word about the rocks! Dh and I couldn't believe it. We always had to tell our kids not to feed the ducks, but our kids would never have thought about hurting them!

It's not only the duck's unfortunately. I saw someone throwing object's at the Epcot turtle's (from across bridge). I was fixin to go over there and say something but they proceeded to leave. GRRRRRRR!!!

I never see anyone bothering the ducks, but I do see the ducks swimming in the pools, which seems really unsanitary and nasty to me. We always laugh and just go on our way, but deep down inside I'm thinking, "Ewwww!" LOL On my last trip to CR my niece and I were in the quiet pool and swimming along in the pool with us was a duck! We didn't last long. LOL

I don't want to overstate things here, but animal abuse is the kind of character flaw that's a precursor of things to come. As for ducks in the pools, I wouldn't worry too much. I've gotta believe those pools are chlorinated past the point where anything nasty can survive too long.

We were at the Beach Club Villas back in May and the lifeguards did say something to the guests about bothering the ducks. No one was throwing rocks or anything at them but especially when there was a mommy and babies the guests were told to please leave them alone.

Fasten your seatbelts ladies and gents, it is about to be another "parenting lessons" thread!!!!:rotfl::rotfl::rolleyes1:rolleyes1:hourglass:badpc::stir:

We don't like when kids bother the wildlife at Disney World either and will usually say something (nicely) to the child about stopping.

However, there is a possibility that some of these kids have never really experience a wild animal (well, as "wild" as Disney's can be) before. I was at Pop Century once and there was a bunny rabbit in the middle of the walkway - a very public walkway. I stood and watched him for a while and then saw a family coming down the sidewalk. I stayed to make sure the bunny was disturbed but found out that the family had never seen a rabbit that wasn't in a zoo or in a book. This past trip, we were highly amused at one kid's reaction to a ray swimming around in the Living Seas. He had never seen any fish in any aquarium before.

I grew up in the city and if it weren't for my family's many camping trips, I would have been one of those kids that had never seen a live cow before. Many of my friends hadn't.

Over my 13 years of Disney trips I would have to say.....

Don't hold your breath. Funny how for a "Family Destination" how many parents seem to be TOTALLY unaware of what thier kids are doing at any point in time. To many examples to bring up, but if you don't see it then your not looking.

people THROW things at them? :headache:: Guess I'm naive.

One morning at CBR my son opened the door and there was a duck looking at him. As he excitedly called us all over the see, the duck waddled right on into the room. That was an exciting way to start the day!

AWWW!!! I hope you got pics!

That's ridiculous....why be at Wilderness Lodge if your children don't respect wildlife????

Parenting 101 again, dont like kids dont go to disney. Ducks in pools is filthy btw...lol. Rocks and cruelty is wrong but a small kid walking with a duck or chasing a little rabbit seems to be fine by me.

So...it's your kid chasing the little bunny, and, as "luck" would have it, your kid catches the little bunny....that, out of self-defense, bites your kid...who immediately drops the bunny (that runs away) and your kid starts screaming...then, you waste endless hours in the ER and your kid gets rabies shots...

Fine with you? :rolleyes1

100% Agreed! :thumbsup2

In fact, I tell our daughter to not even feed or call them over. I don't want the animal to lose their fear of humans b/c all humans are not so kind to animals. Instead, I tell her to enjoy the animal from a distance and let the animal do it's thing.

While I completely agree with saying something about abusing the animals..especially the ducks - I would like to add PLEASE, PLEASE, don't feed them. We were recently at BC and many ducks seems oblivious to the hundreds of people at the BC pool! I can live in harmony with them just letting them do their thing and I do mine. But many people, including adults, think it's "cute" to feed them. This draws many, many, many to the area and then sets them into a frenzy looking for food. It's asking for trouble.

HAHAHAHA wooooooow that is so cool!

I really think that I ducks and turtles are some of my fav animals and I LOVE watching them (along with the bunnies) around WDW.....it makes me sad that kids/people torment them.....

Ya we saw a TON of ducks and bunnies at our stay at Pop. Of course my kids, being kids, wanted to chase them so they needed frequent reminders not too, but I agree, parents should be explaining to their kids to watch and enjoy the wildlife, but not chase it (or worse throw things! Thats awful!)

Ugh I agree! We were eating outside at the Mexican cs restaurant in Epcot, and people were feeding those big birds or whatever they are and they were EVERYWHERE looking for food! And then one pooped right by my foot. Not cool :headache:

Yep when we were at the Grand one year some kids were throwing rocks at the ducks and terrozing the bunnies. I was disgusted. I think it is poor parenting not to teach your children to respect animals. I said very loudly "Those kids are throwing rocks at the ducks!" I hope their parents heard me too and I really don't care if the moms and dads got offended because after all who is going to speak on behalf of the poor animals that are there minding their own business.....
