stomach bug at disney?

This year has been especially bad for strep and the flu. My DS, who is in kindergarten, has been hit especially hard--repeated bouts of strep, flu, ear infections. He hasn't really been healthy since Christmas. When I volunteered at his class, I finally realized why. Kids sneezing a stream of snot into their bare hands, etc. I had to tell a couple of them to go wash their hands with soap. They even closed a local school for a few days because so many kids were sick.

We are leaving for Disney in a couple of weeks and I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that everyone will be healthy. The Purell is an excellent idea. I will be sure to buy some for the trip.

Funny all this is being brought up. My DB and DSIL just got back from Disney 3/3 to 3/10 and on the 5th she was vomiting, she was sick for 24hrs. My DN got it on their first day there, she is 1 1/2 yrs old...........We were in Disney back in Jan. and my DD got sick the last 4 days we were there, strep thoart, stomach pain all over feeling lousy. She stayed in the room the whole time, she had no strength to go out, she didn't even care she just wanted to go home. It never fails, one or both of my childern get sick whenever we go to Disney. I always wondered was it just us? After reading all this Purelle and Lysol will be are friends next year at Disney World. I also think I'll be packing my own sheets and blankets too. our maid never once changed our sheets or fully cleaned our room, I went to them 2x about it and got a full cleaning my last night there, what good did that do. I am a DVC Memeber, so they don't clean everyday, but they never cleaned my room once in the 2 weeks that I was there.

It's funny - I was so paranoid about my kids getting sick before our trip to WDW last July, that I didn't even want them to go over their cousins house that week for fear of picking up some "sickness". Well, DD4 ended up with a stomach bug our 2nd day there - felt better by the next morning. I was worried everyone else would get it also, but the rest of our trip was ok - until the last day when me and DD8 felt "queasy". On our 18 hour drive back home, I felt terrible the whole time and DD7 also came down with it. It didn't ruin our trip, but on our next trip, I will definitely bring some Lysol!

I would also consider the time of year in which one plans a trip...flu season is usually Fall through Spring depending on what zone you live in. For here in Texas flu season can begin around Oct and go through April...

I noticed alot of the posts had dates and months listed in signature- alot of traveling Nov-March...that is a bad time of year for illnesses.

The airport and planes are a huge factor in sicknesses. I go to the extreme and clean those plane seats and armrests b/f my girls get all cozy!

I too clean my room upon arrival with gloves on. I know it's extreme but I feel more at peace and am able to relax more that way.

We did a WDW package Land and Sea last May and I was so freaky about the ship experience but we had no problems and I even let the girls go to the children's area and play! WOW-that was a big test of faith on my part!

We all survived with nothing to report!
I so would not go to WDW during flu season-I rather endure the heat!

Boy, and here I was thinking "we" were the only ones that got hit!

We were there in December, 2005, and while I wasn't keen on going during flu season, the pull of the Christmas decorations at Disney overtook me!

I had a cold going down there (of course, we flew), and while we were fine the eight days we were down there, everything hit the fan when we got back!

Returned on Saturday, December 10th. First DD2 was sick on Monday, took her to the doctor - strep and double ear infections. Second DD2 (twin!) was sick on Wednesday - strep and double ear infections. I was sick on Thursday, aches and headache and nausea. DS6 was sick Saturday - strep and one ear infection. AND THEN on Monday I got totally ill - aches, pains, high fever, my head hurt so bad I couldn't even roll over in bed. I was admitted to the hospital where I stayed until Christmas Eve - the viruis had settled in the lining of my brain, and when they did my spinal tap the puncture wound was leaking fluid so I got to have a blood patch as well. Since then all three of my kids have had strep again THREE times, we had the Norwalk virus in January, myself and DS had influenza in February, which I followed by having another round of stomach crud but was able to not share with my family. Now my son had strep AGAIN, I'm waiting for the girls to get it.

I told my DH we had to go back to Disney to get rid of the bad ju-ju!

So sorry that everyone has been so sick, eventually it has to end, right?

WhileI don't doubt what you're saying about actual colds...and I agree with germs being spread on planes (has less to do with dirty arm rests, and more to do with re-circulated air and very low humidity, IMHO). My guess is that dehydration is a significant factor - that can easliy cause a sore throat and an upset stomach by itself. It's easy when you rmoving around WDW to forge tto drink enough water - and then if you get on a plane already dehydrated and tired - you're much more likely to catch a cold.
