truthfully we get sick everytime we come home from the south but i just figured it was our body's rebellion for coming home to 2 ft of snow. this yr we all got sick with out the disney perk so how much fun is that

We were at CSR the end of January. Our bathroom smelled so bad we had to request a new room (vomit smell). The mousekeeping people actually got into a verbal fight in front of us about who's responsibility it was to clean that room! Always remember mousekeeping is just making the beds and a quick vacuum and wipe down. This is not heavyduty cleaning and germs are not dealt with. If you haven't gotten sick from staying at Disney in your 200 trips it is just because you are lucky, not because they are clean. BTW my son got the bug the day after we came home.

I agree about housekeeping, however, it's when they don't do those basic things that I have a problem. And germs are dealt with if they don't bother to empty the trash container which may contain food wrappers, tissues, etc.

On our last trip in Nov/Dec 2005, we arrived home on a Saturday morning, and were at the Doctors office Sunday evening. DS10 had strep throat. I figure it is from everyone holding on to the same bar on the rides and the tons of germs that have to be on them. He probably ate at some point without washing his hands- we carried snacks in our bag and didnt always wash hands before we grabbed a snack on the go. Lesson learned!

I came home from WDW on the Sat of President's day weekend; started feeling a little throat burn and sniffly that night, by Tuesday night couldn't swallow. Went to the doctor on Wednesday and sure enough, had strep throat, yay. It took me 2 full weeks to feel completely better. Also, my BF's mother is a 1st grade teacher, and the week prior, had 1/2 of her class out at 1 point or another (10-12 kids) with strep during that week!

how odd that you should post this, we went in this past October and DD was sick with a stomach bug after we got there and then one night i got incredibly sick with the bug and then the next night DH came down with it, we found it wierd, but chalked it up to us all being in the same room.

Well DH gets back to work to find out one of the Sales guys that works with him was in WDW at the same time (different resort) and he and his DW and his 2 kids all went through the EXACT same thing....it was odd..something was a flyin' around WDW then

I have always heard that Disney took great care to make sure their hotel rooms were clean, to the point of boiling the sheets because they did not want to have an outbreak of sickness amoung their guest. Guess that might be wrong.
I do know that there is alot of sickness here, Tennessee. The same sort of things others are having.
I always have hand sanatizer with me at the parks and moist toweletts so we can wash and eat while in line.

maybe or maybe it was going around his office? it's weird how people don't stay home when they are sick but don't think they could possibly give it to anyone else( not directed at quoted poster) usually things have an incubation period so i would think if someone gets sick when they pretty much just got there, they got it from another source and brought it along. or maybe the excitment, different sleep schedule etc put enough stress on their bodies so they were not able go fight it off like they had been up to that point. now if you get sick when you get home i would guess it was something you picked up on vacation but lets see, 30,000+ guests in one place..somebody is sure to have a cold!

there was an interesting tv show on a while back about epidemics and i think is was the initial sars patient(?) , happened to be sick, got on a plane to attend a wedding and spread it from there.

Stomach bugs can cause problems with meal plans because it is unwise to eat on an upset stomach.

He watched her go over, pick up the tongs and look at them, then put them back. She then went back to what she was doing. .

(added laters: After that...) he should have gone back to the serving area and taken the tongs away himself. He would then put the tongs into the place where used non-disposable dishes or trays are found, at his convenience.

Children who cannot reach the washbasin faucets without getting their sleeves on the wet vanity should be accompanied into the rest rooms.

Think about how many times your hands touch a surface at disney - every ride, every bathroom, every food counter, etc. Each one of those surfaces have been touched by hundreds, if not thousands of people since their last cleaning.

We made sure that we sterilized before we ate, and whenever we felt necessary. came home just fine.

He should have gone back to the serving area and taken the tongs away himself. He would then put the tongs into the place where used dishes go, at his convenience.

The tongs and the waffles should have been taken away. By an employee. That is why he told one. He and his coworker were on their way out the door to a class. They did stop and mention it to someone at the front desk and they promised it would be taken care of. Hopefully, it was.

Purell...Purell...Purell!!

It may not be 100% especially from things like, tongs being put back in food after falling on the floor (and not knowing about it), but it will help with many of the other things..I'm a germaphobic, I always make dd wipe her hands before eating anything and after having her hands all over ride bars and stuff like that with gel/alcohol.

We frequently go to WDW, she only seems to get sick just before we go or within the first few days (which was obviously picked up from school at home)---that's where I can't control her anti-germ habits. (although I try)

I guess some parents don't have a choice than to take sick kids after planning a trip they may not be able to cancel without losing a lot of $$$. I do have the option most of the time to postpone or reschedule, except for those rare occasions when she gets sick in WDW. She picked up strep the 2nd night we were there about a year ago. We went to the clinic nearby and started on the AB. We hung in the room for that first 24 hrs which she was on the meds and then did a "light" day after. She was fine by the next day and we still had another day or 2, if it were a virus we probably would have gone home.

Many of these sick germs are brought in and with LOTS of people comes lots of germs. Just takes one!

You know, it's so funny; this has been mentioned a few times in this thread. We did take purell down for our family trip in October. I did send DH with some wipes and stuff for his March trip but forgot the Purell! Not gonna happen again!

We do the exact same thing for every WDW trip. My DF is an environmental health specialist and always tells me to stick out my hands while he puts germ X on them every time I touch bathroom doors, ride handles, and such

II'm a germaphobic

ME TOO! And I am from the Chicago area and this terrible flu you are all talking about, I GOT! I am usually SO careful about germs and washing my hands and such and somehow seemed to have gotten the flu. Luckily mine wasn't too bad as some others have described theirs, was able to drink water and eat plain toast, but wow, 3 days of this nasty virus! I CANNOT imagine getting a virus like this in WDW, for those of you who have and who have dealt with this, my hats off to you for sure!

It might be that WDW rooms are not as clean as they should be, but please remember it's flu season, BIG TIME! At least 75% of the people I regularly talk to have had the flu within the past few weeks and about 80% of our patient calls (I work for an MD) have been flu related. The outbreak seems so bad this year! I side with everyone else, keep drinking some fluids, vitamin C, and washing those hands!!!

I always swore that I was not going to be one of those crazy people who hose down their hotel rooms with lysol . But I am beginning to drift over to the dark side! My trip isn't until October, but in my little bag of stuff I already have a tube of hand sanatizer. It is sounding more and more like the smart thing to do!

As I understand it, it also doesn't kill certain stomach bugs. There was an outbreak of Norovirus in a local school this winter, and the info we received from the school district indicated that hand sanitizers and Lysol do not kill that particular virus. Thorough hand washing with soap will wash it away, though it will not kill the virus. I do use hand sanitizers when we aren't able to wash for one reason or another, but, as you say, it's not 100%. This is really gross, but the bulletins from the school district also stated that the virus can temporarily become airborne, so it's a good idea to wear a mask or otherwise cover your mouth when cleaning up after someone who has been sick.

I am a very healthy person. Very soldom sick maybe once every 2 years with a bad cold. Stomach Virus maybe once every 2-3 years. Sometime and everytime during our WDW trips I am hanging my head in the toilet. I am also diligent with hand washing, vitamens, and I try to watch what I eat. I don't know what it is about me, but one of the every virus known to man at WDW is going to get me every time! There is some bigtime bugs floating around that place. I've just come to expect it!

Like I said, it's like Lysol...99.9% effective. There's always gonna be that resilient germ. I have to admit, though, I do also bring a can of Lysol to every hotel we go to (not just WDW) and I spray when we first get in--everything!! And, I spray or wipe with Lysol wipes, the door handles and phones and sink faucets daily (after housekeeping)....

Mommyboo!...I would have been the one to take those tongs and put them elsewhere.

There have been lots of threads that talk about this (don't get started on the bed spreads!! ). One thing that's also been mentioned is the buffets and the serving utensils. All the hands that use the serving spoons and tongs at the buffets, etc...you know everyone who uses them didn't all wash their hands, it just takes that 1 person, yucko!! Believe me, we can definitely go on and on about this one!!
