Stock Certificates?

Kind of weird to ask this question on a Disney board, but you people know your stuff!:worship:

While cleaning out an old drawer in our house, I found 2 stock certificates from the 80s in my husbands name. He said he sold a bunch of it off then through an electronic transaction with a third party back then and he had no idea he had these.

How does one go about finding out if these are still "good". If I want to convert these to cash how do you do that. I am completely clueless here. One certificate is for 30 shares and one is for 41 shares from a telecommunications company where he once worked. Point me in the right direction!

one way is to go into a local branch of Etrade, Scottrade or some other similar broker and they can help you. You might have to open a free brokerage account. They will deposit those shares into your account. Then you are free to do whatever you want with them, such as sell them for cash, etc.

Many telecom companies have gone by the wayside, so it's possible those certificates are worthless as well.

Do a google search for:
(Company's Name) Investor Relations

The company's investor relations page may list a "transfer agent" such as Computershare. That's a company which handles stock certificates for different companies. Call them and ask them if they can sell for you, and if so, what they would charge. They will give you instructions on where to mail the certificate, and if you need to enclose a letter or a particular form.
