Stinky co worker says she is suing company for slander!

I can hear the judge now, "Odor in the court, uh I mean order in the court".

We had the same problem many yrs ago at work. Boss hired a girl from another country and they did not bathe everyday or use deodarant.
My boss called her in the office after the controller got wind of her and had to introduce her to deodarant and explain that she needs to bathe more often. That did the trick. She has now been there over 20 yrs and bathes often, LOL.

How sad that she does not use the information that you gave her to make a positive change.

I don't know about this -- I think there's a lawyer out there for every possible case, no matter how ludicrous.
You've got that right Steve. Silly lawsuits seem to be the order of the day now. Don't be surprised if this does go to court DisneyDee and don't be surprised if she wins. Immediately write down the events. Because, if she does go to a lawyer you will most definitely be deposed.

We had a case here at work where an employee was caught red handed stealing company property and was terminated. The company followed labor laws to the letter in respect to his termination. He turned around and sued the company for defamation of character. Guess what???? He won. His attorney presented such a case for the "poor emotionally distraught man" that the jury awarded him $1.5 million.

Her lawyer will probably find some Doctor who will say she has a medical condition that makes her smell and it will turn into a discrimination case!

Oh Dee, you poor thing. You didn't want to get involved in this and it's turned into such a mess.

I'd give you a {{{HUG}}} but it's early and I haven't showered yet.:p

Sorry this has happened to you, Dee! :(

I agree with the others that said to write down and date, word for word, what was said between you and the boss, and you and the 'stinky one'.

Keep us posted... this is one of those cases you follow because it is just too stupid to believe!

There was a lady where my sister works that was fired for coming in late and leaving early. She and her lawyer got her job reinstated.... only to find a couple of months later that she had been stealing hefty amounts for a good long time.

She lost the job permanently for that one, and apparently the lawyer would not take her case this time.

This is as stupid as the McD's hot coffee thing! Maybe even worse!

For those of you waiting for more on this case, heres the newest. The stinker came into work today (NOT freshly bathed as you might think! ) She didn't quite stink, just smelled alittle stale:rolleyes: . Another co worker asked her a job related question, and stinky said she did not know and didn't care to know either, so there! This co worker told stinky told her to drop the attitude QUICK, or she would sue HER for.....are you ready? POLLUTION of the work place:eek:  . You see, yesterday, when stinky announced to me very loudly she was going to sue whoever slandered her name and have her job or was going to sue the whole company the original complainer who told the boss stinky was smelly, just happened to hear her threaten with a law suit, and of course happened to be the one stinky got nasty with this morning. One by one all went into the office, and stinky was told she would have to sue everyone, cause at one time or other, everyone complained about her, so she wouldn't have much of a case. That was the only way to keep her from taking this any further. I am sure she wound up more hurt then before, its one thing to think someone had a vendetta out for her, and quite another to find out she offends everybody! But she pushed the issue and found out more then she wanted to know I am sure. She has decided to make the courner of the building her little home, and said she doesn't want anyone talking to her unless absolutely necessary. Hey, since she still doesn't smell like a bed of roses, that suits everyone! Gessssshhhhh what a day, I need a nap:confused: .

Ouch, that had to hurt, but why doesn't she just take a shower? Make some excuse like needing to change her deoderant or something. Sheesh.

Maybe you should all bring her flowers to make her feel better? Nice, fragrant flowers. So many that she almost can't walk into her office? :teeth:

I don't get it...why doesn't she just shower??? If she does have some medical condition that makes her stink, get a stronger deodorant and use some perfume and other nice smelly things to put on to cover up the smell. Why does she have to make such an issue out of it???

if it is a "stale" smell, that sounds like she might be wearing clothes that are past due to be washed. I knew someone like that once. Dirty clothes on top of not bathing= :p

So, in other words, she has learned absolutely nothing from this incident. Geezzzzz, just take a BATH, it's not rocket science.....

Haha, that is greatness! :teeth:

I am guessing this incident isn't going to make much difference in stinkys attitude in bathing, I really think she will maybe bathe twice a week instead of once, just enough to keep the smell to a minimum.

i think she still has her job because she is a good worker, and actually very sweet. Its hard to believe this usually sweet natured person was so angry about this, I can see be embarressed, but it came through as anger. The odor problem is due to it heating up now that the weather is warmer. We are in a warehouse setting that has air conditioning, but is still warm in some areas. Even slight sweating can be offensive if the person doesn't bathe.

YIKES. What an uncomfortable situation you have with this Dee. When she calms down she will probably not actually sue anyone. I can't imagine how painful it would be to go through a suit like that. All of the witnesses called on to tell how her odor was offensive. How mortifying.

She is probably very embarrassed and hurt right now.

Try not to stress over this. How did you end up in the middle? Bless your heart, I know I wouldn't want to have to tell someone something like that, I'm sure you were not too happy having to do that.

I hope this situation is resolved quickly and soon, my friend.

Kath, i got involved wen my boss asked me to talk to the so worker about her "problem". If you want to know the full story on that fiasco, do a search from afew weeks ago when all this started. I also don't believe it will come to a law suit. But if it does, i am prepared with documintation of our conversations. I really just can't figure out why she would want to take such an embarressing situtation any further.

I've been following your threads and haven't posted until now.......usually because other people have already posted my thoughts ;) :)
But I just had to comment on this:

That's ridiculous!!

Is there any reason to think there is a medical reason underlying this? Or a financial reason such as inability to afford soap, water and deodorant? Sheesh, my mom was born during the depression and used to tell tales about how "We sure were poor, but we were always clean...soap and water was pretty cheap!"
Maybe you should take up a collection (with a hefty contribution from management!!) and get a nice gift basket made up with soaps and deodorants and laundry detergent and leave it in her corner. If she is a "sweet" person then she needs to take it to heart if management tells her that her odor is offensive and gives her specific instructions on cleaning up her personal hygiene and/or laundry habits. Good grief...the management really needs to do something...way too much energy and productivity is being wasted by everyone!!

I agree with you that it is amazing she would want to keep pushing this as "slander" when it is obviously not one person "against her" with a personal vendetta.
I hope this is resolved in a positive way for you and your co-workers ;) and I do look forward to you keeping us posted! :)
