Maybe it's just me but having rehabs in the most busiest time of the year is crazy to me.Case in point the Pirates of the Caribbean. Who made the decision to close one of the most popular attractions in the Magic Kingdom during the summer months.Yes my displeasure has a little more substance since we go every 4th of July and this is year 16 but what where they thinking ?

They have to do it sometime, and it seems like they try to spread them out during the year so that there aren't multiple things closed in the same park at the same time.

Now as for the timing of Pirates being closed now. We were there in April, and during the week we were there, Pirates was open and closed multiple times during each of our MK days because they were having mechanical problems with the doors that open near the beginning of the the ride. I figure it must be better for them to close and do the refurb that to irritate guests in line by closing the ride down multiple times during the day.

Sorry, T was at MK last Sat. 6-6-2015 it was open. Danny

I suspect there are regularly scheduled refurbs and there are "oh crap, this thing is broken/looks awful" refurbs. Perhaps that explains some of the big attractions being down at peak times? :earsboy:

Yea I was one who got pretty soaked on pirates so I'm happy they're fixing that. It was quite annoying to get more soaked on that ride than splash and then to not even be expecting it.

They call them rehabs here: http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/rehab.htm

I thought the words were used kind of interchangeably.
They are, not to worry! The big thing is that WDW doesn't really have a non-busy time anymore. If it is in the state of need that it will be broken down multiple times per day during the real busy season, it is better to plan it to be closed during that time then to deal with upset Guests because it's not running when it should be. At least then people have the opportunity to change their plans. If they can't it would probably be closed more then open during your stay.

Has there been an announcement that this refurb will correct the drenching issue, or is that just an assumption because that's the worst problem with the ride right now?

GRRRRRRRR So irritated that Pirates will be down on our trip too. Pirates really needs a refurb. It has been breaking down a lot, someone got their finger cut off, the new boats jostled folk around and got everyone drenched. I totally understand it needs to be shut down and worked on. What I don't understand is why they waited. Then announced the closure and rehab back in Feb I believe. I don't understand why they didn't close it in march so it would be all done for they busy summer season. It is more than just a "freshening up" It seems like it is more of a safety/mechanical issue that should have been addressed back in March.

I'm just a bit bitter because two of my favorite rides will be down on our next trip, Pirates and Malestrom. Oh well, just an excuse to go back sooner I guess!! I think I read the Frozen ride will open in May of 2016.

I don't think Disney has came out and said what is being worked on for the refurb. But it is a strong rumor that the water coming over and getting the first row wet will be fixed. Something about the new boats brought in were slightly too big for the track and it was off a bit. Being off on the track a bit might be what's causing a weight disproportion and causing the front end to be too heavy.

So from what I've heard that's going to be fixed. And I'm sure some of the animitronics need some care as well.

I was just there in November.....believe me, you would rather have it closed down then have it "broken down" numerous times throughout your stay. We had a FP+ option for it, but it was closed down at the time so we had to come back later. Another time it broke down after we were in line for 20 minutes. The wait times were always horrible because it kept breaking down!

Would you rather see this? Refurbs./rehabs have to be staggered so that there aren't a lot of attractions closed at the same time.

Disney operates 365 days a year unlike other amusement parks (especially in the northern part of the country) that are only open during the summer. There is very little down time for proper maintenance and upkeep to be done on the rides (you can only do so much when the park closes at 2am on an EMH night in the summer and then re-opens at 9am the next day.

With omni-mover rides, they theoretically never stop once started, unless for a guest with an impairment that requires the ride be stopped for them to safely enter/exit the vehicle. Motors need tuned, parts wear out.

Look at Disneyland's HM. They close the ride for a month or so to do the NBC setup and then it's another month AFTER the season to take it all down. I don't think crowds at WDW would be accepting of that 2 month closure, just for an overlay.

Sometimes, the folks at Disney do have to be the bad guys and take rides down for the attention they deserve. The heat and humidity probably do take a toll on things.

So I do find this thread to be somewhat humorous in that there are more threads on how bad things are in the parks and how rides need refurbed, yet, people don't want them down during "their" vacation... How do you think people felt when CRT was down? That's a really big draw for some families, landing that meal and it was gone for the early portion of this year...

I get your frustration but with the amount of attractions they have, they can't do all the refurbs in a down season. The people that go in say Jan/Feb are still paying good money and it wouldn't be fair if half the attractions were down. There are always more refurbs during that time but they do have to spread them out to keep a steady stream of people at all times. And really, there doesn't seem to be a "down time" anymore. I think I would be more disappointed for the families that do a once in a lifetime trip and have a major attraction down.

Yeah - I've been twice when Splash was down. It has to be tended to during someone's vacation, and there's no longer a truly non-busy time. And sometimes, it's a case of necessity.

These go together. @itchin2go , I don't know if the 2x you were there was in Jan/Feb time, but there are annual refurbs (aka the water rides during the "colder" months) and there are the massive overhaul refurbs that take place that are for extended periods of time.

I was so happy it was still open last week when we were - although we did get a little wet on one of our rides (on the first row). One of the days we were there, we talked to some people who had been stuck on the ride for 40 min. It does suck that they chose the busy summer months to close it though!
