Still don't understand rehabs

Last time we went to WDW was 2011. Big Thunder was closed. In 2013, we took at road trip and visted DisneyLand. Big Thunder was closed.

So, I totally understand.

Jungle Cruise was just rehabbed. The waited to have that up and running before they took Pirates out of commission. And Pirates needs help badly. Last month not only was the mist screen never working, but the mermaids weren't either. Add the problem with the new boats taking on water, and it needed to go down to be fixed.

It was in bad shape in November. We got quite wet, boats bumping each other & we were stuck on the ride for 20 minutes too.
This was our experience too. With the way the ride stops every few feet and bumps into each other... It's just not that fun anymore. It actually made me realize I never need to ride it again lol. Maybe the refurb will fix that...

Here's the problem, if they only did rehabs during th
Just take solace in the fact that POTC really, REALLY, needs that refurb! They are having a lot of problems that force unscheduled shut-downs, and the ride itself had many issues that impact the experience. If you are a regular visitor, just look forward to next time when you'll (hopefully) be able to experience the fully restored glory of the ride.

I was there in December and on Sunday the ride broke down when I was on it. We were stuck on it for over 35 minutes. I went back on Friday with the hope of riding it again and smoothly this time. Had my fast pass. I was only able to be there from open at 8am until noon that day. The ride was down the entire morning. And I had heard it was having issues even before. I agree. I am going down July 11-19 and though this is my second favorite ride in all of Disney (behind Soarin') there is plenty for me to do there to enjoy my trip.

Reports are that the engineers wanted 6+ months down time to repair all the issues with it and they are having to try and get it done in 1/2 the time. There are many mechanical issues with the animatronics and the effects as well as the issues with the boats which may require changing the flume. This isn't a "Take the boats and and stick new ones in" fix unfortunately. All the things others have said are also correct. You are going to have it down during a busy time no matter when they do this, there are too many attractions to be done in the weeks long "down time", they do have to coordinate with contractors and probably even have parts manufactured for the repairs. It's unfortunate that some people will not be able to ride it but this was overdue and appears that they may need even more time than they are getting.

Would you rather see this? Refurbs./rehabs have to be staggered so that there aren't a lot of attractions closed at the same time.

In the case of DHS, yes I would love to see that. There are major changes coming to that park, likely Carsland and Star Wars. I'd rather they close the park completely for 2 years, rather than take the 5-7 years that it takes Disney to complete new projects.

Switching out boats doesn't take 3 months.

They are doing much more than changing out boats. Draining the water and letting everything dry out will take some time itself. I believe it will extend beyond 3 months and they are trying to be optimistic with the time they have allotted.

Yeah - I feel like that is what they tried when the put the new boats in, and look where that got them.

With the exception of Star Tours they could close the whole thing permanently and I wouldn't mind. My adult nephew, however, would be heartbroken not to get in a handful of rides to Tot and RnRc. And I'm sure more people are on his side then mine.

I would like to see work done at HS but they do have 3 of my favorite rides there. Star Tours, ToT and RRC. I would hate to see those go. But as far as refurbs, in contrast to carnivals and fairs which do very little maintenance work on their rides (hence you read about more accidents, the only ones I can recall at Disney are typically self inflicted, as the case of the idiot who lost fingers sticking their hands in the Pirates water a year or so back), Disney invests in maintenance which I lie

I'd be devastated at it permanently closed, it's my favorite park. It's just currently in such a state of shambles, I want it revived as quickly as possible. Much rather it be by 2017 rather than 2022.

Or could it be that they ordered new boats, or other items and they just need to wait for it to come in before they close the ride?

Was just about to post this or they it could be they are waiting for some other part for the boats that had to be designed and manufactured.

POTC has been down more than up in the last few years. All the refurbs and unscheduled closures don't seem to be making any difference.

I'll be honest, I'd have no problem with WDW completely shutting down for a week or two to clean and repair issues.

The last refurb was to put the new boats in, if I'm not mistaken. And they haven't closed it down for any length of time after that.

They would need to close it for months every year, not weeks. This is what most amusement parks do - close during the winter and plan all refurbs and new construction for that period.

They probably gave that much lead time to people COULD try to plan around it.
How would you like it if they announced in feb that POTC would go down for 2 months in only a matter of weeks, and you already had your trip booked?
And someone got their finger cut off because they're an idiot, not because the ride needs a refurb

Personally, I would be totally fine if they announced it would go down for 2 months in only a matter of weeks if it was a safety issue and or mechanical issue. I have heard tons of reports of POTC breaking down and closing (even on this thread) for the past few months. I have also heard reports of people getting drenched and jostled around on the ride with the new boats, one woman on these boards reported she was hurt when her knee was whacked on the side of the boat. Seems they should have just shut it down and fix it asap. Now if it was just "sprucing up" stuff that can wait, I think it is fine to give a longer warning. And yes, the person was foolish who stuck their hand in the water, but I am sure they will try to ensure it will not happen again.

We were there in October, and it broke down while we were on and had to be evacuated. I later heard the same thing happened the day before. Many people are commenting on it.

Would you prefer they leave it open and you get to see half of it before it breaks down and your stuck on it for 45 minutes?

If go every year, I don't see why this should bother you so much. We go a lot and it'll be down in August and it doesn't bother me. I feel bad for our friends that are taking their kids for the first (and probably only) time and won't get to see it, but hey **** happens. In June 2013 we went to Disneyland and BTMRR was under a major refurb. They we went to WDW in November, and we waited until the last day to ride BTMRR, and it was down THERE too! We didn't go last year (did a cruise) so as of right now, DD hasn't done BTMRR since 2012. Stuff happens. Life goes on.

On the other hand OP, it would also royally suck if they piled up all the refurbs for the slowest time of the year, like the fall, or beginning of the year. I wouldn't want to visit if there were many multiple refurbs going on at once...

They really do need to spread them out.
