I have been researching DVC for a while and I am just about ready to purchase, but I am still confused about how add ons impact stay length. I am still not sure if I should do Saratoga and get the full length 2054 vs 2042? or by Wilderness Villas (Our familys favorite) at resale. If I go the Wilderness route and find I want more points and get them from Saratoga can I use all the points at Wilderness if I am within 7 months of my stay?

Yes, at 7-months you can combine points and use them any way you want.

It's only at the 8 - 11 month window for home resort priority that you can't combine the points. VWL points could only be used to make a reservation at VWL, and SSR points could only be used to make a reservation at SSR.

At 7-months you can combine the points in any manner you want and make a reservation at any of the 7-DVC resorts.

P.S. That's assuming you bought VWL first and then Disney let you do a true add-on to that contract. That is, it gets the same contract number with a new suffix to it. (such as xxxxx-001). If it was added on under a different contract number, or had a different use year, then you can't combine points 'directly'. You can transfer points between the two accounts though which basically accomplishes the same thing, or you can make part of your reservation with points from one account, and part from points from the other account, and then link the reservations so it winds up being a single length of stay.

We own at WLV. Our mistake was not figuring out how many points to buy in the original contract and had to add-on twice since then. My advice is buy where you think you want to stay the most and dont cut yourself short on the points. There are some very good programs out there that will calculate how many pts you need for any stay at any DVC resort. This will be a good way to figure how many pts you will need. Good luck in your decision!

The advice you will see posted here repeatedly is to buy where you want to stay the most. If VWL is your family's favorite, then you should buy there.

Keep in mind that there may be times in the next 38 years when you want to visit WDW during busy DVC periods such as early December. If you like the VWL the best, it would probably be difficult to book your family there in early December when the holiday decorations are so awesome.

Good luck in your decision.

If you plan to stay mostly at VWL, definitely buy there. The extra 12 years at a higher cost is not worth it. OTOH, if you plan on trying all the resorts somewhat equally and will be happy staying at SSR for higher demand times, that is fine as well.
