Still confused about DDE! Just give me the basics please!!

Here are the particulars, and my confusion regarding them...

I am a Florida resident, and a seasonal passholder.

If I purchase the DDE for $60 (my discounted price) and it is good for up to 10 people at a table, why would I need to buy one for my spouse (add'l $25)?

Are weekends blacked-out?

What else can you tell me?

Also, does it frustrate anyone else but me that AP families can't get the Disney Dining Plan??

Can you tell I'm a little flustered...we're trying to plan just a simple 2day stay that's getting increasingly un-fun.

Actually you don't have to buy one for your spouse. The only time you would both need one is if you are dining in separate restaurants. You can use the DDE on weekends but there are certain days that are blacked out - Mothers' Day, Christmas, 4th of July, etc.

Actually the dining plan can be purchased by anyone including AP holders. There are certain parameters though. I know with the free dining, you had to stay something like 3 nights, buy at least a one day ticket and pay rack rate for your room (no Ap discount).

You may have run into trouble since you are only planning only a two day stay.

I think that you're right about not being able to get the DDP with the AP, because you have to purchase the room, tickets, and dining plan together. If you do need to buy some tickets, you could get the DDP fot those tickets. I was frustrated because the DDP had to be the entire length of your stay, so I made 2 reservations.

Re: DDP/AP...I was told that because we already have physical paper tickets to the park, even if we are staying onsite, they couldn't link everything together because when you want DDP/tickets/room key, they put everything on one KTTW card. I just think that with Disney being so innovative, they'd figure something out.

I'm still running the numbers on the DDE...trying to see if it's really cost effective. How much would I have to spend on TS restaurants to make the $60 fee pay for itself?

If you would spend $300 then your 20% savings would be $60 (what you pay for DDE). Anything over that is extra. The 20% also includes alcohol which can add up fast as well.

It's not just TS either. Lots of CS places take it (even ones who don't have it listed) and food courts. As well as bars and lounges. That discount on drinks really adds up quickly, even if it's just a glass or two of wine with each dinner.

Good point, Quinn...I forgot the CS and food court places. $300 isn't hard to rack up over the course of a year (we are usually just doing day trips and weekenders).
I'm tempted...just disappointed that I can't take advantage of the free dining.

We have saved a nice amount using the DDE and perfer it over the dining plan. We don't eat at CS much and always go to at least 1, sometimes as many as 3, signature restaurants.

Only probelm, now we look for any little bit of time to squeeze in another trip before it expires! :goodvibes

With a few exceptions, I don't believe CS places accept DDE although of course they do accept DDP. The exceptions I know of are the food courts of the value resorts and of POFQ since these resorts have no full service restaurants. There used to be a few reports of DDE being accepted at POR food court as well.

What CS places have you been able to use DDE?

But I so agree that the savings add up quickly if you dine in the TS restaurants.

Edited to add that there are CS in AK park that accept DDE but again that is because there are no full service WDW restaurants there. I always forget the AK CS!!!

Actually, you can get the DDP by doing what the rest of us Annual Passholders are doing -- we are buying a 1 day pass for each person in our room. Then we can have the DDP for the week that we are at Disney. Actually, it is saving us bunches and bunches of money doing it. We are saving the 1 day passes to apply toward our new Annual Passes. This was all recommended by the Cast Member that booked our trip.

Disney1990...just to clarify, because I had heard that before (buying a ticket)...I only have to purchase a one-day ticket for each member of my family and I can get the DDP for our whole stay? I thought I had to get tickets for the length of stay? ie: 3days worth of tickets for 3days' stay.

If what you are suggesting is do-able, I would def buy one-day passes and either use them to upgrade later or give them to extended family members.

Please elaborate if you are able, thanks!

No, you only have to buy a 1 day ticket. You can hold that ticket and apply the value towards your next AP.

For the DDP, you only have to buy a one day ticket but you do have to pay rack rate (or AAA) for the room. The DDP is based on the number of days you STAY, not the number of ticket days you buy. The rack rate requirement may only be true for the "free" DDP offer, but I know I had to do it for our September trip. You can apply that one day ticket to your AP renewal. But it's my understanding you can only apply one "credit" per AP renewal. So you couldn't get three one day passes on three separate trips, and apply all three of them to pay off next years AP. You can apply three passes to three separate AP renewals (i.e. one pass per person, one credit per person). I hope this isn't too confusing.

Anyway, as far as the DDE discount, It's worked well for my family. I'm also a seasonal AP holder (and a Tampa resident, HOWDY neighbor!). I bought the DDE before our spring break trip and used it at: WCC, Boma, Sci Fi, 50s PTC, Trails' End, Kona, Tusker House, and AS Sports Food Court. They didn't take it at Teppanyaki, but I did get a 10% AP discount there (many of the TS restaurants give you that 10% AP). I actually did a little spreadsheet before the trip, and compared my savings to my cost. We are very light eaters, and usually split meals. My spreadsheet had us breaking even just on that trip, and I ended up doing several more food court meals than I had planned, so I actually saved something like $75 (over and above what the AP savings would have been) that trip. Since then, I've used it at Pop Century's food court twice on day trips.

Another benefit to the DDE is that you can get free valet parking at the resort when you go in to eat, and free theme park parking when you go into eat. Since the seasonal pass doesn't cover parking, I checked into how this would work. You would pay for the parking and go into the park. Use your DDE when you eat (obviously at a DDE restaurant), then go to guest services and show them your receipt for parking and your meal. I was told that it has to be within 3 hours of arrival. So far, I haven't actually done this, since we've eaten counter service on our day trips since I got DDE. One place it should work for us is going to AK. We typically eat at Tusker House for lunch, so I should be able to get my $9 back for parking there.

There's a very complete listing on all ears that shows all the different discounts available, which should be able to answer specific restaurant questions.

Hope this helps!

Lisa,
Your post was very helpful. Thanks, neighbor! (We're in Riverview).

I'm trying to convince my DH that this is a good deal, especially with the $25 discount off regular price.

Yes, I understood what you meant in the first paragraph regarding upgrades: 1 ticket towards each upgraded ticket.

I forgot about the parking perks, that's another plus.

I'm convinced!! (Now for DH!...!

The parking perk is a great plus. I ate at Boma for Easter dinner and while I could not use the discount at this ( holiday) dinner I was able to valet park for free with the DDE.

We are AAA members going during free dining. Are you saying I don't have to pay rack rate, can get it with AAA rate or is that just allowed when you are paying for DDP? Thanks.

You'll need to call and ask. From other threads I've read, they say that there are a certain number of AAA rates available during the free dining. It's worth calling and asking.

What CS places have you been able to use DDE?

When I first got it it was kind of a rush thing before I left and I either didn't realise or forgot that they didn't take it at CS places and I used it at a couple of times in MGM. No one said a word and they took it. Sorry I can't recall which places, probably down by ToT somewhere. I didn't use it at POR food court because I didn't think they would take it but right after I got back (three weeks ago) several people said they did use it there and it was accepted. Also used it in the lounges at AKL and Poly. I can't remember if I used it at POR lounge or not.
