Sticky Suggestion: Sun Pass for Rental Cars

How do you get the Sun Pass? I just checked my reservation with Alamo and don't see a way to add it. I was hoping to bypass the counter and use the self check in Kiosk.

I believe it is automatic with pics taken of plate and billed to your cc on file with alamo.

I know I personally was asking about getting a portable sunpass transporter. I figure WE travel to Orlando 2-3 Times/year and tolls are 3.00 ish from MCO to WDW plus Rental co fees of 2-2.50/day of use I can buy Transponder and save myself some money in long run. I personally know in case of upcoming trip I have no choice but to use e toll or my sunpass as rd to port has gone toll attendentless already from what I read on Avis website.

I also seem to recall reading on rental car sites in not so distant past charges/rental day not days used, so that must be recent change.

I am making 2 trips to Florida in the next 2 months, one on rental car in Miami and the Keys, and one driving our own car to WDW.

I researched it thoroughly and do NOT want to pay anyone $2 or more a day for the courtesy of paying my tolls for me.

Since rental cars use toll by plate, you can get the portable Sunpass and if that is present it will override toll by plate. But I will check my rental charges carefully

I know the sunpass is $20 but over a couple of years it's worth it, and, I can't stand to pay one more dollar to the car rental companies and their outrageous rates and fees.

I just returned from 10 days in Disney last week and I just selected the option on my GPS to avoid toll roads. It's a little longer way but it eliminated the need to pay anything. The only time we would've needed a toll road was from MCO to the resort and then back. The other times we drove it was to Universal and back. So I realize this won't work for everyone, but it's been just fine both times I've done it this way and plan to keep doing it this way on future trips. :)

This depends on the company. National, Alamo, and Enterprise only charge on the days tolls are used. The other companies seem to charge every rental day. Scroll to the bottom of this page to see the policies.

I'm usually with you. But National, Alamo, and Enterprise have a very reasonable policy for this (fee only charged on days tolls are used, and a $6 max charge for the whole rental period).

My thinking also. See www.sunpass.com !
Be sure to buy the portable one. It arrived by mail in about a week for me.

Have thought about buying one, too, the last couple trips. Now that I know some of the manual booths are going away, it might be time to pull the trigger.

Last time I looked into it, I read some info about updating the licence plate number the transponder is linked to. Do you think it's necessary to do this? The SunPass site is pretty specific about keeping the account info up to date with current license plate numbers.

yes, you need to register your personal car's license plate when you buy the sunpass. You can easily change it or register temporary plates with expiration dates such as for a rental car. If you don't have a computer with you, you can call Sunpass during weekday business hours to have it done for you. They said you should do this within 72 hours (enough for the weekend, eh) after you pick up a rental car so that their system can reconcile toll by plate with transponder.

I will be using it on the Southern turnpike heading to Key West in 6 days!

I just got my portable sun pass that I will be using next week while in FL. I am renting from Alamo and I will be checking to make sure they do not charge me extra for using their service when I have my own. I paid $40 - $25 for the transponder and $15 pre pay I will let you know how it all pans out!

Using my Sunpass tonight when I get in to Fort Lauderdale and drive to Florida City before going on the the Keys.

Learned they now have a mobile app for Android which we loaded onto my wife's phone, which allows me to register the rental car right away!

Will post again to let you know how it went.

I was just going to buy one of the temporary passes for our next trip in November and figured I'd see if anyone on here had any experience with it. Can you get them at the airport or only online? How did things go, did it work out for you? What about the app or the Sunpass telephone number with the rental car info, did things go smoothly?
