Oh my this is our first trip, we are still planning and as the time ticks by I keep adding up going, OH MY GOD should we do this? It could be a car, a few computers, LOL But I insist I want to go! Does anyone else feel sticker shock?

I felt this way about the room and I'm staying in value! I usually just stay in Orlando or Kissimee somewhere and I had been getting rates of like $39/night and to stay at POP its like $109/night. I really want to stay onsite but dang, that is a lot of money for a room. That's why I've been working my butt off to try to save up for it. I hope I make my deadline....

It looks like your trip is awhile away. Keep watching for a "code" that becomes available for your room and time. They will be posted here on the Dis most likely before you would see them in a newspaper! Also check out the budget board as there are many smart shoppers over there that can help with ideas to make a trip a bit more affordable. It is really worth it, Disneyworld is a very special place to escape from real life and just be a kid again! :teeth:

I was thinkig to stay on site - but I found an ok best western just offsite, with free shuttle for $26.50 a night, cannot beat that, had a fridge and microwave too. It saved us Over $1000 alone in just hotel, that could pay for park hopper passese , plus $ to spend!

only 2 more months to we go :) :cheer2:

I felt this way about our first trip in June. Thank God for the DIS, cause I wouldn't have even known that discounts room rates exsisted. This board has been a very helpful planning tool. We spent alot but it was worth every penny. And as you can see, we are over the sticker shock, cause we are going for our third trip next week. We are becoming better budgeters each trip :)

Yeah, the first time I added up everthing for the budge it was . For me it was - this could be a new couch, go towards a down payment on a new car, multiple trips to see family... you get the idea. Now I have it broken down into components - Airfare, Room, Tickets, etc. It's alot less shocking when I look at it a portion at a time rather than total budget.

The sticker shock comes from seeing the bottom line total and not the individual prices. I don't think Disney's hotels are any more expensive than any other resort hotels. And if you compare the price of tickets to Six Flags or any other big theme park, your gonna see that they run about the same for a day. It seems to me that you get a lot for your money from Disney. Try pricing out similar vacations to Las Vegas or the Bahamas and you will see what I mean.

Yep!!! I hear you with the sticker shock!!! We are a family of 6 - so *really* sticker shock as our oldest is considered an adult for ticket prices, etc... And then we are so silly as to go with the Premium package ;)

I think we could easily buy a small new car for the price we are paying for this vacation but for us it is more like a once in a lifetime (maybe twice once the baby - who is FREE so that helps!) is older we will go 1 more time.

Absolutely! Disney is very expensive! I'm guessing that most of us are of middle class income, and our vacations are precious! Check any of the on-line travel sites and we can all find trips around the globe that will be less expensive. Why do we continue to choose Disney? It ROCKS!! To us, no other vacation includes this kind of entertainment, and atmosphere. It truly can't compare to any other vacation! Some people think I'm crazy, but that's okay, it truly is "magic".

But we are worth it!!!!! We all need to treat ourselves once in awhile!!!!!

Think about how much $ a year a smoker spends to support his/her habit... more than a week in Disney! (If you ARE a smoker, think of how much Disney $ you could save by quitting...)

My DH doesn't even want to know. He likes to live in denial.

When DH asks how much something costs (esp. our WDW vacation!), I always ask him if he really wants to know, or if he'd like to be blissfully ignorant. He most often choses "blissfully ignorant." ;)

We bought the package w/ dining this trip. It seems like SOOOOOO much $$$. But, I think it will be lovely come April, when I'm not spending $$ for food at the parks.

I remember DH's shock at the cost of our first trip...you know, the once in a lifetime, take the kids to WDW and get it over with trip? Now he doesn't even blink at the cost, though we do stick to a budget of sorts. Are there a lot of other things we could spend the money on? Of course! But 20 years from now are we going to remember that great carpet, furniture, computer, whatever your personal fill in the blank is? I doubt it. But the memories we make on these trips will last forever.

I like to think of it this way:
When you average it out per person (4 of us) it's only $858! And each gets airfare, hopper tickets, lunch, snack, dinner and room for 7 nights! :goodvibes

SuBeat, you nailed it! I told the exact same thing to my DH! We couldn't afford family vacations when I was growing up (except camping, and to me that's not much of a vacation!), so it is important to me to take vacations with our kids, and if that means we drive used cars, or forego a big screen TV, then so be it. You can't put a price on making memories!

Do you work hard? So why not play the same way, especially if this is your one trip of the year. If you go out to dinner once a week for a year, say $40 total each time, over the course of a year.....$2080!! That's a Disney trip, I could go two years with not going out if it meant a trip to DW. It's all relative to what is important to you,I like to visit DW, and that's where my hard work goes. And it is truly the one place I've found that hard working adults can, at least for a brief period, be kids again, and get away with it.

I figure the amount that we don't spend on pets, golf, smoking or alcohol adds up to a vacation. So my addiction is Disney! :earboy2:
