Hey all!

It's a crisp October day here in New England, and I'd like to make stew to take to my grandmother for dinner tonight. Does anyone have any easy recipes? I haven't made it before, but I'm pretty confident I can throw it together. Only problem is I don't have a crock pot, so that's out. But any other recipes/suggestions will be appreciated!!

Thanks in advance!!:D

(And you're all invited to dinner at Gram's for helping!! ;) )

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 pound beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch pieces
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 small onion, chopped
2 stalks celery, thickly sliced
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 can (14.5 ounces) recipe-ready diced tomatoes, undrained
1 cup water
2 small carrots, peeled and thickly sliced
2 MAGGI Beef Flavor Bouillon Cubes
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves or 1/4 teaspoon ground thyme
1 large potato, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces

COMBINE flour, salt and pepper in medium bowl. Add beef; toss well to coat. Heat oil in large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add beef, onion, celery and garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, for 6 to 8 minutes or until beef is no longer pink and vegetables are tender. Add tomatoes and juice, water, carrots, bouillon and thyme. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low; cover.

COOK, stirring occasionally, for 25 minutes. Add potato; cover. Cook, stirring occasionally, for an additional 25 to 30 minutes or until beef is tender.

CROCKERY COOKER METHOD:
COOK beef, onion, celery and garlic as above. Spoon beef mixture into crockery cooker; cover with potato, tomatoes and juice, water, carrots, bouillon and thyme. Cover; cook on high heat for 5 to 6 hours or on low heat for 10 to 12 hours or until beef is tender.

Serving Size: 4

This is the one we usually use, but meals.com has tons of redipes.

I cook the beef and onions in water and apple juice. Add some rutabega (yellow turnips) and carrots. When cooked, add a can of those little potatoes, and some green beans, and thicken the sauce. Sorry, I can't rmemeber the spices off the top of my head... thyme and.... something. Thyme alone will do. Yumy with corn bread.

I also take a chuck roast and cook with red wine vinegar, brown ugar and beer, then add veggies.

My favorite easy one, courtesy of my great grandma:

Brown 2 lbs of stew meat (I have also used hamburger) with one medium chopped onion.

Add 1 large can of tomato juice (I have used V8)
3-4 peeled and chopped potatoes
4 chopped celery stalks
4 chopped carrots
add salt and pepper or a packet of taco seasoning if you like spicy

Simmer in a covered dutch oven for 2-3 hours, adding water if necessary as it evaporates.

Stir in any other frozen veggies or canned veggies you like (I do a can of corn(drained) and you can add rotel to really make it spicy)

Simmer another 1/2 hour or so.

Serve with cornbread---it is so easy and wonderful!!!

Actually, I made stew last night in the crock pot. I cheated though. I used Hamburger helper crock pot meals. It came with sauce, potatoes and veggies. All I had to do was add stew meat and five cups of water. I cooked it on high for five hours, and voila!!! I had homemade tasting beef stew. It was delicious!!!

But it's made by the same people that make SPAM:eek:

How do you get that beautiful brown gravey color? When your adding tomato sauce/juice?

/
Gravy Master..it makes it a nice flavor and color too
Also I do not use the conventional stew meat from
the stores . I use london broil steak and it is usually
a good two dollars a pound cheaper then stew meat.
I cut it up in little pieces and it is delicious

My mouth is watering people....

I won't be getting home from work til after 7pm.

Oboy any more tips on gravy?:o

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys!

I actually read RemyandHolly's mom's post just before I went to the grocery store, so her's is the one I went with. We'll see how it turns out.

I'll give it a taste in a couple hours...it smells pretty good, but who knows - I may just be using monkeyboy's recipe instead!!:teeth:

Thanks again!!

The recipe I posted is not a brown sauce---it stays reddish although the meat juices make it darken quite a bit.

It is delicious though!
