Hi all! We got back last week from my first DDP trip. I planned the ADRs like crazy ahead of time and scoured the Dis for info so I knew I would be doing a food report when we got back. So here goes...

For a little background, I'm Melissa, lifelong lover of all things Disney. My BF is Steve, a 30 year old man who never had any interest in Disney before I forced it on him ;) . This was his first trip. He feels pretty strongly about having 3 meals a day and he hates counter service so we opted for the deluxe dining plan. At $70 per day each, it was pricey but we figured that with 3 table service meals per day it would at least break even. I'll get into the budget details later though.

Anyway, here's us at the beginning of the trip on DME. Partially so you can get to know us and partially because I'll post an after pic at the end to see if you can notice the weight gain. :lmao:

Ok, so to get down to business.... we flew into Orlando on July 31st. We arrived around 2 pm and got DME to Pop. We knew we would only need one meal for that day so we used the other 2 credits that we would have had for that day for 2 Signature restaurants later in the week. Anyway, we checked into Pop and headed over to Epcot where we had an ADR for dinner at San Angel Inn. I know, I know... the reviews tend to be terrible. But I love the atmoshpere so much that I picked it as our first night's dinner. Our ADR was for 5:00 and we arrived around 10 minutes early. It was busy there all ready and we waited behind several people who got turned away at the podium. When it was our turn, I asked for a table by the water. We were told it would be about 25 minutes and they gave us a pager. We went on the 3 Caballeros (sp?) ride and wandered around the Mexico marketplace. Almost 40 minutes later we still weren't seated. Finally we went back to the podium and said we didn't need a table by the water, we'd take anything. They took us right in then.

So, this was our first meal on the DDP so we weren't entirely sure what to expect. The waiter eaplained that on the deluxe plan we could have our choice of any appetizer, entree, and dessert. I was happy to hear that there were no restrictions and that was true of almost all the restaurants we went to.

For an appetizer, I got the Sopa Azteca.

It looks a little greasy in the picture and I guess it probably was. It was so dark in the restaurant, I didn't realize it at the time. I enjoyed it a lot though. It had chunks of avocado and tortilla strips in a tomato base. Very good.

Steve got the Tacos de Pato.
IMG_0153.JPG

It was tacos with duck meat which I would never have picked. He liked it though. Although he says they were "just good".

My entree was the Plato Mexicano.
IMG_0159.JPG

This is the menu description: "Plato Mexicano - Grilled beef taco, chicken enchilada, and cheese quesadilla with black refried beans, guacamole and Mexican rice." See that steak in the picture? I was quite surprised when I got that. When I ordered it the waiter asked me how I wanted it cooked. :confused3 I thought it was a taco and an enchilada so I said "Um... well done". Then a well done steak arrived. It was probably fine but I eat my steak medium rare so I didn't enjoy it. :lmao: I probably should have clarified when he asked how I wanted it cooked. The rest was yummy though.

Steve got the Filete Motuleno.

He liked that. There was a fried plantain that Steve thought was some kind of potato and gave to me to try. Well, I expected it to taste like a potato and it tasted like a banana so I nearly gagged on it. I literally couldn't swallow it. He liked it though.

Dessert for both of us was Flan Vainilla.
IMG_0160.JPG

There wasn't a big dessert selection so even though Steve wasn't excited about flan he got it anyway. I loved it. I had a lot of great desserts that week and this was probably in my top three. It was so light but so satisfying. Yum. Steve was disappointed though.

Overall, San Angel was good. Not fantastic but we'll definitely go back next time. I think you can't beat the atmoshpere.

The next day we went to Liberty Tree Tavern and California Grill so I'll try to get to that later.

So far, this is shaping up to become the most thorough and usable set of dining reviews I have ever seen! Kudos!

But what in heck did you say to the waiter that made him hear something other than "Plato Mexicano?"

I'm pretty sure that was the Plato Mexicano. But I don't know :confused3 :lmao:

So I'm going to try and do day 2 while DS in in bed. DS didn't come by the way. I decided that if I was going to make Steve love WDW, it had to be an adult's only trip for his first time. It's just not the same with a whiny 4 year old.

So on our second day, Steve was doing the Richard Petty Driving Experience. We had to be there at 7:30 so we grabbed breakfast at Everything Pop. It was typical counter service breakfast, nothing fantastic. After Richard Petty (which Steve LOVED by the way), we headed over to the Magic Kingdom where we had a lunch ADR at Liberty Tree Tavern.

Liberty Tree Tavern was pretty quiet at lunch. Like most places we went to, we probably didn't need ADRs for lunch. But, better to be safe than sorry. The atmosphere was just so so, very casual.

We both got the Clam Chowder for an appetizer. I'm afraid I don't seem to have a pic of it but as Steve says "everybody knows what clam chowder looks like". It was a little spicy for clam chowder, ok but nothing special for sure.

My entree was the Pilgrim's Feast.
IMG_0215.JPG

It was exactly like I wanted it to be. Yummy dressing, turkey that seemed like it had been sliced off a real turkey not some pressed piece of meat. I liked it.

Steve got the William Penn Pasta.
IMG_0214.JPG

He says "it was pasta". Nothing special, I guess. He also didn't really enjoy the restaurant in general. He just reminded me that the service wasn't great and he didn't care for the atmosphere either. And he was disappointed to find that there was no beer in the Magic Kingdom :lmao:

Dessert for me was the Caramel Apple Tart.
IMG_0217.JPG

It was yummy but I liked Steve's better. He got the Liberty Shortcake.
IMG_0216.JPG

It was a really moist sponge cake with strawberries. Very good.

We spent a rainy afternoon at Magic Kingdom then headed to the Contemporary for our first Signature at California Grill. This was the one I was looking forward to most. We got there and I immediately felt underdressed. We didn't have time to go back to Pop to change so we were in the same soggy clothes we had worn at the park all day. We went up in the elevator and were given a pager and told we could grab a seat in the lounge. We got a seat by the window with an amazing view of MK. We were just starting to look at the drink menu and our pager went off.

Even though I was really looking forward to it, the menu didn't appeal to me that much. For an appetizer I went with the California Rolls.
IMG_0256.JPG

It was a really big serving. I think I ate 4 of them. It's definitely a size that could be shared or even eaten as a meal.

Steve got Sonoma Goat Cheese Ravioli.
IMG_0255.JPG

Not so big in comparison to mine. Definitely a single serving appetizer. He really liked it but I found it rich and probably wouldn't have been able to eat it all.

We both got the Oak-fired Filet of Beef for an entree.
IMG_0259.JPG

Sorry that picture has a bit out of it. I think you'll find most of our pics have a bite out of them... :rotfl: The steaks were delicious, couldn't have been any better. And I can't remember the details of them but I know the potatoes were delicious too.

I loved my dessert, mostly because of it's presentation. It was called Peachy Keen.
IMG_0261.JPG

Isn't that fabulous? It's a peach spice cake, bellini bubble tea, and a peach cheesecake.

Steve got Banana and Butterscotch Buzz.
IMG_0260.JPG

He didn't like it and now, a week and a half later, he can't remember why. :sad2: That's why I'm doing this report, not him. ;)

So that's it. The next day was Tusker House character breakfast, Yak and Yeti lunch, and Narcoossee's dinner so stay tuned!!

Yum!! Great start to your reviews!!

We're going to Liberty Tree Tavern for lunch in January, and I was planning on getting the pasta... I hope I like it more than Steve did!!

Looking forward to reading the rest of your reviews!! :thumbsup2

Really enjoying your reviews. I love California Grill and I've never seen that peach dessert before, it looks really good.

Enjoying your reviews:thumbsup2

Good move on leaving the 4-year-old at home so you can help your DH see the light:lmao:

Wow - great reviews and great pictures. I couldn't decide between LTT and Plaza on our Feb trip -- but that Pilgrim's feast looked so good!! Well ... Plaza this trip -- I'll just have to plan another trip back to WDW for LTT.

This review is off to a good start! I can't wait to hear about the rest!

I'm pretty sure that was the Plato Mexicano. But I don't know :confused3 :lmao:

According to Allears menu, this is what "Plato Mexicano" is:

Plato Mexicano - Beef Tenderloin Tampiquena, chicken enchilada, and beef flauta, served with sour cream, black refried beans and Mexican rice $20.99

So, the Beef Tenderloin Tampiquena (Tampiquena is just a way of cooking steak) is the piece of steak that you got. Not a taco.

Great start to your reviews and lovely photos. Looking forward to reading the rest of your trip dining experiences. :woohoo:
