Wife: Irwin expected short life

Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin always felt he would die early, but that he would be killed in a car wreck and not by an animal, his widow says.
In an interview with Australia's Nine Network that aired Wednesday, Terri Irwin said her husband, who died from the jab of a stingray Sept. 4, had an uncanny way with animals that both of them believed would keep him safe as he caught crocodiles, snatched up snakes and played with other dangerous beasts.

"I never thought it would be an animal, he never thought it would be an animal," Irwin said. "I thought he would fall out of a tree; he thought it would be a car accident."


Asked by interviewer Ray Martin if Irwin believed he would die early, Terri Irwin said, "He had a very strong conviction that he would, to the point where I'm grateful in a way, because we're prepared."

Irwin, 44, died minutes after a stingray's barb pierced his chest while he filmed a TV show on the Great Barrier Reef. His death prompted an unprecedented outpouring of grief in Australia and among millions of fans of his TV show, "Crocodile Hunter."

I was moved by the interview (and thanks Nutsy for the links from the Aussie one). I wish Barbara Walters hadn't been the one to interview her though----not my favorite---and she seemed to be just learning about who Steve was. Couldn't they have gotten someone who was more familiar with Steve and his work and "got" who he was ?
The part where Terri said how she would miss all the "fun" got me right in the gut too. I also laughed a bit when she talked about how Steve was afraid of parrots and how Bindi would sometimes have to rescue him. Too cute.

Nutsy, No she didn't say why she was in Tassie. From what I got out of it, she was travelling and did not have access or a good signal for a phone. It was only when she got to where they were staying that there was an "urgent" message left for her from her brother in law. I have the interview taped and may watch it again in the next few days to see what details I might have missed.

I agree that it was really cute about the parrots. I also really got choked up when Terri was close by the tiger being bottle fed and she really lost it talking about how Steve didn't want the animals in cages and how the animals are played with and not left by themselves during the day.

Not putting her down here, but she did get one bit of info incorrect in her preulde talk. She said Steve was wrestling an Alligator when he and Terri first met. However, it was a Crocodile.. he was doing his Croc Show.. and yes there are a couple of Alligators up there at the Zoo but he never brought them out to meet the public.

Like I say.. I'm not trying to put Barbara Walters down.

Ok. well she was in Tassie for 2 reasons..

Fist off there was not enough room on Croc One for all the film crew and the family, and as it turned out it was just was well they weren't all there.

Second. Bindi's teacher turned 30 so Terri suggested that Emma (teacher) her sister Kate, Terri and the children have a holiday in Tassie while Steve goes off and films his documentary.

On Father's Day the day before Steve died.. Terri and the children left messages for Steve on John Staintons mobile phone I believe. Steve was busy filiming and they were unable to catch up with each other.

She also spoke of the fun Steve had with the children.. how we would be up at like 2 in the morning and head down to the office to do some research.. he just coulnd't be still long enough.. He would come back up to the house when he knew the children would be awake and they would play.. he would rip all the bedclothes off Roberts bed and cover himself and the children with them and Terri would have to find them and pretend to be a monster.

He would spend 3 hrs in the pool with Robert.. teaching him to swim and just having fun. She said there is no way she could spend that length of time in the pool.. she just doesn't have Steve's energy.


ETA.. Yes they were travelling and were out of range for the mobile phone... when the pulled into their accomodation for the night she was told there was an urgent message for her. She also said she was always getting urgent messages.. so wasn't all that concerned.. but of course on this occasion it was devastating news for her.

In some extra footage.. we heard that they received 5 messages a minute and the internet broke down (possiblly the web site). Terri was just totally amazed at the number of messages and tributes that were outside the zoo.

I agree.

I enjoyed the interview, and I thought Terri was so brave and strong for doing the interview so soon after Steve's death. I thought the home movies were so special, and had to laugh when Steve was doing his American Accent and was saying "Golly Gee-Whiz" instead of "Crikey". I thought little Robert is just adorable and it makes me sad that he's so young and that Terri now has the task of raising the children without their father. She's such a strong, smart woman, and I know the children will be fine - however when she said that Steve was just so much Fun, it made me realize that's how all of us felt about Steve.

I do hope one day when my children are a little older, we can visit Australia and go to Australia zoo and really appreciate all that they have done for wildlife conservation.

I watched the interview last night. I really wish we were also able to see the Australian interview also. I was so moved by Terri last night, she seems like such a strong woman. I sure did cry though when she would cry

Oh go ahead and put her down, she makes me crazy. She is famous for trying to make people cry and, horrible as this sounds, I'll bet she was crazy excited over this interview.

Had Terri not done the Austrailian interview as well, I'd be fuming over Barbara. It seemed wrong and way too soon to be talking to this woman at all. She was like one big opened wound and I was almost embarassed to be watching. It felt like peeking in on someone at a time when they should be alone. Just a feeling I had, although I - and my boys - were moved to tears as well.

I dont know how Barbara could sit there without crying, I know id be a basket case not only with Terri crying but the beauty of that zoo would overwhelm me.

There were 2 times where I thought Barbara was going to cry. One was when they were walking around and Terri started crying. BW reached out and touched her said said something like "it's what he wanted". The other was when BW seemed lost for words and nodded several times before she spoke.

Yes Terri said Steve thought he would go early, that he tlaked about it often. Terri said she never thought it would be because of an animal (I think she said she thought it would be because of traveling)

In a voice over Barbara breifly mentioned where Terri and the kids were, but not really why.

Oh and earlier Nutsy asked about why Barbara Walters and not osmeone like Jay Leno.
I've never know Leno to travel for an interview. His show is filmed and shown on the same night, 5 nights a week. He only takes a couple of weeks off a yr.
BW is well known here in the US. Gosh she has been around for 35 yrs or more I would say. In the last 20 yrs or so, she has really become known for her 1 on 1 interviews with people who rarely give such interviews.

I would not suprised if Leno books (or tries to book) Terri the next time she is in the States.

Aparently the Leno tribute was up for a little while but was taken down because of copyrights. I missed it, and really wanted to see it

I think it's a lot better-- a lot more comprehensive-- than the Barbara Walters interview. And the guy, Ray Martin, comes across as more sincere.

Barbara walters really turned me off for good. not that i was a fan anyways but she seemd cold and way too pretentious to be with someone like terri who was so sincere spilling her heart out. Seemed like just another notch in old barbara's career belt..i did not detect any real empthy at terri's pain.

I have not watched the Barbara Walters interview yet, but I have it TIVOed.

A bit about Barbara Walters...First, I dont really like her. I dont think her interviews ever seem personal. She has a patern with her interviews & she does the the same patern over and over.

That being said, in interviews like this, the person can pretty much request anyone they want for the interview.

I am sure all the big names requested the interview through the proper channels...Most likely Steve's Manager. And then Terri got to pick who SHE wanted to interview her.

It always seems like a race to see who will get the next big interview. Barbara Walters wins a lot of them.

But I dont think 20/20 came in & said "Listen Teri, Barbara Walters is coming to do the interview & thats that."

I am sure, like in any other "big interview", all of the people who wanted the interview had to request one & wait to see who Teri picked.
