Was wondering if I cooked it long enough? I used Quaker steel cut oats and cooked it 25 minutes like the directions say but it has a sort of crunch to it. Is this normal for steel cut?

No. It's mushy like regular oatmeal.

I just bought at target some instant steel oats. Really good! They only take 2 1/2 minutes in the microwave.

I usually cook mine for at least 30 minutes. To me, they aren't as mushy as regular oatmeal, they do have more texture. But not crunchy.

Mine isn't mushy either. If I wanted mushy, I'd go with rolled oats. But its not crunchy.

I always had to cook it at least 30 minutes, and it still had a slight nut consistency to it.

I just go with the quick oaks, 90 seconds in the microwave, and it's ready.

I"ve found that overnight in the crockpot is best for steel cut oats...otherwise I get too impatient in the morning because in my house they take at least 30 minutes... but usually a bit more to get the texture I like. ........P

A thermos works as well.

I've tried a few ways. Stovetop makes them too crunchy, even when I cook for 45 min. Overnight in the crock pot, for me, is too congealed. It's a nice rich treat sometimes, and I'll use milk instead of water but still, not traditional oaty like I expect.

Then I did this: Soak over night in the pan you wish to cook them in with 4X the water (1 cup oats to 4 cups water). In the morning, turn that pan on and cook to desired consistency, usually 15 min or so.

Perfection!

Some people do the overnight soak by bringing the pan to a boil the night before, then covering and let it cool and soak all night long, and then cook the next morning for 7 min. I haven't tried that yet.

Has anyone ever had the oatmeal they serve at the Marriott hotels? It's so good. I've tried to get it like consistency they do but haven't had much luck.
