Can you bring one on board? If you can and have, what is a good one?

Well the prohibited items include:
  • Electrical appliances such as rice cookers, hot plates, coffee makers, electric irons, bottle sterilizer and bottle warmers, electric blankets, electric blenders, etc. Please note: A limited number of approved bottle warmers and bottle sterilizers are available upon request through Guest Services. Also all ships offer laundry facilities with irons and ironing boards. Valet laundry service is also available for a nominal fee.

While steamers aren't specifically listed (but irons are), I would think they would fall under these restrictions.

Not sure if you can have one or not but I looked at the price list for laundry service a few cruises back and I dont remember laundry service being that much so might just let them steam a few things once you are onboard.

I also saw some people ironing their own stuff this past cruise in the laundry area.

No. I had a small hand held Steamer that was confiscated on my May 2015 - 7 night Carribean on the Fantasy. Guest services said they do not allow any steamers or irons in the guest rooms. They have irons in the laundry rooms.

I paid the pressing fee which was very inexpensive $3.50 for pants. I can take a pic of the receipt and share it.

how did they know you had one?

The baggage goes through a scanner (much like an x-ray) and they can see what's packed. Some people pack such items in carry on bags, but those, also, go through a scanner. If they see a suspicious shape, they will ask you to open your bag for further screening.

DCL has irons onboard in the laundry rooms.

Or you can just get to your room, get out the wrinkly things, and send it all out for pressing! Fabulous service, well worth the (pretty darned low) cost.

The first time we used the laundry service on DCL we were just going to have my husbands Tux and Suit pressed and then I realized we hadn't gotten them dry cleaned since the last time he wore them. We had them dry cleaned and they came back fresh and pressed. The price was cheaper than our local dry cleaner. The next trip we didn't get the things dry cleaned at home and sent them out again. If we get them dry cleaned at home they would still be all wrinkled by the time we unpack them and would have to be pressed anyway. Saves time and money in our eyes.

It's about saftey. A fire at sea is not fun. Just leave it at home and use the ship's laundry service.
