Staying on property vs not...

We're staying at a Good Neighbour hotel this time around, but my husband is... umm, "frugal" (though I prefer to call him cheap), and told me that staying on property is not worth the money. I'd love to try it out just once before I write it off. If I can figure out how to talk him into it, maybe we can stay on property during our next visit. So, what are some perks, and advantages of staying on property? Thanks!

If at Grand Californian...
location, location, location
huge chaisse lounge chairs
pool area and huge hot tubs
Comfy big chairs in the oversized lobby
Indoor / Outdoor huge fireplace
Steps away from Napa Rose, Storytellers, and Whitewater Snacks
Private Entrance to DCA (huge perk in my opinion)
Early entry to DL on certain days
Walking through Downtown Disney vs. Harbor Blvd traffic
Just the sense of peace

I been to every Disney resort around the world! I love these parks and I go as much as I can or afford to. That said, I can ONLY do that if I stay off property! ;) I'm far from rich, just budget and save for things I like and the only way I can do it is if I stay off site or with friends. And honestly, I dont go for the hotels, I go for the parks first and foremost.

Will it be nicer if I stay on site? Sure, of course it would. Is the experience any worse if I dont? No, not at all! For ME anyway! Other people are different though. And I have stayed on site at DLR over the years, but honestly if you are going to pay $300+ a night for the same rooms you can get at half the price or even less, its hard to justify it, ESPECIALLY when that money you saved can go to more stuff in the parks themselves like nicer dinners, more souvineers etc. And the thing is a hotel for me is just a place to sleep. I throw my bag down, watch some TV and then off to the parks until closing so its another reason why its a waste for me.

But if you REALLY plan to use the facilities, ie, pool, restaurants, etc then its worth it for people, especially if you have kids. The main perks is Its close (although there are hotels across from Harbor even closer), quality restaurants (but more expensive of course) and there are cool experiences like character dining, nice atmosphere like the lobby at GCH and so on! So there are things worth doing, but again only if you really plan to take advantage of it!

I will be at the resort next week for 5 days for DCA opening! I chose to stay at the Sheraton. Its $135 when I reserved the room. Nice room, pretty grounds and a pool although I dont plan to swim, a 10 minute walk to the resort and I will get a room with a view of the resort. Now if I had the money I couldve splurged on the $400 a night at GCH or DLH, but when I think how much money I will be saving a day and how much that money can go to soooo many other things in the parks, its an easy choice for me!

A lot of the off property hotels are within easy walking distance to Disneyland. I don't think you lose that much by staying off property here.

When I first planned for my trip in August last year (yes I plan way ahead like most of you here :goodvibes), I thought I would stay off-site since onsite's just too expensive. Now I have changed my mind due to the new EMHs for onsite guests. I will be staying onsite for 5 nights in order to get EMHs. Carsland's opening will make DCA very busy. So now I am thinking of a split stay (still waiting for a promotion offer to book pixiedust:): FFI (2 nights), PPH (2 nights) and DLH (3 nights). Hoping to enjoy the new DLH pools on the last 3 days. I will be off my budget by about $1000 :confused3 but it's DD's first visit and we won't be returning in the near future... Well need to get back to work!! No work, no money, no Disney :scared1:!

Yeah but I think you can get MM if you have a 3 day hopper even if you dont stay on site! That said I think if you stay on site you can do it everyday? I actually stayed at GCH last year, just for two nights and I remember doing the early entry for one day to ride Star Tours but I didnt do it beyound one day.

You have to try it at least once! We used to regularly stay at the GCH and it's beautiful. If using the pool area is important it's a must. The magic mornings are also a great perk. Spending time in the lobby is a favorite for us. The location can't be beat! We also recently stayed a week at PPH and it was very clean and nice, but I did not feel it was worth the cost. I honestly felt the Hojo was very comparable for what we need vs. the PPH. We now stay at good neighbors because we can do 2-3 trips for about the same cost as one on property. For special occasions though we will stay on property. Next year is our 10th anniversary and I hope to spend some time at DLH. Which good neighbor are you staying at?

I would only stay off property if it's within an easy walking distance. I've used Hilton points for free stays at the Homewood Suites but the shuttle is a pain when you are used to just walking to the hotel. It runs every half hour and is ontime but you are watching the clock to see when you have to leave to catch the next shuttle.

Can I be honest? I'm sort of sorry we ever stayed on property. We just can't justify the expense every time, but now I know what I'm missing. Was better off when I had no idea about the incredible breathtaking view from PPH. Our next dream is a view room at DLH, but at what cost? LOL

I feel like everyone's misreading the OP's post. She wants to try out a DLR hotel once and needs help to convince her husband to do so, but everyone's giving her advice against it.

I'm on the same boat with you OP, sort of. I just know there's many users on this forum who love staying on-site and I just want to stay there once to see what all the fuss is about and as a once in a lifetime experience. DBF understands and has agreed to it.

Sorry I can''t give you actual advice but i understand where you're coming from.

In my experience when you have to convince someone, you're starting in a losing position. We did that with my (now) ex-husband and convinced him to stay at the PPH and he hated every minute. He complained about everything. Said the view was crappy (it is incredible), said WOC from the room was lame (it is pretty darn cool if you ask me), said the hotel was mediocre (the rest of us thought it was great). He went in not wanting to like it so he didn't.

If you think your husband will be different, try appealing to him with early entry, the biggest perk I see of staying onsite. If you book through Disney Travel, and many other travel agents, you also get passes for the Toon Town Morning Madness. The biggest perk of all, is the view. Honestly, staying at PPH without the view wouldn't be worth it for me. Perks at DLH specifically right now are that the pool was just redone and is supposed to be incredible. That's why we want to stay there! Also, the headboards look amazing. There's just something about staying onsite and staying in the magic. It really does change the entire trip!

The main advantages are hard to explain because not everyone cares about the same things. For me, the hotel experience is very important. No matter how much people rave about their favorite Harbor motels, there is not one of them that comes close to what you get at a DLR hotel. They simply can't afford to offer acres of landscaped grounds, gazebos, restaurants, shopping, activities, etc etc. They don't have marble, granite, or even real glass instead of plastic in most of them. They don't have luxury bath supplies, characters in the lobby, topiary Disney shrubs, a giant lit Sorcerer's hat, *character meals, private park entrances, discounts on taxis, package delivery to the hotel, early entry for every single day of your stay, DTD steps away, the monorail next door, etc etc. At the resort hotels there are *spas, waterslides, pools & hot tubs, *onsite childcare, special activities for guests, and entertainment, rooms that often have a lot of Disney magic (music and fireworks in the headboard, for instance!) and a sense of being in the heart of Disney.

*these items have a fee

It's not cheap to offer all of that. It isn't cheap to maintain and refurbish the way Disney does. The prices of the hotels reflect the fact that it costs a lot more to give guests a resort experience than a motel and also that the demand is high enough to set a higher price. The nice thing is that at DLR, you have the option to choose to pay to stay at the resort or save your money for other things and still enjoy the parks. It's not a bad idea at all to mix it up and stay onsite once (or once in a while) and offsite at other times.

Most of the time, I stay onsite. There is nothing like it for me. However, I go often and my agenda is broader than hitting the parks non-stop. I love to enjoy the lounge at GCH, shop in DTD, lounge by the pool, etc. I love having a retreat to go to during the day and return to at night.

For me, the hotel is not just a place to sleep but an integral part of my DLR experience, so I'm willing to pay more. I usually go when prices are lowest and discounts are offered. I use my AP for room and dining discounts when they are best, and in the past this has made my onsite stays only somewhat higher than offsite prices. That is probably not going to be true this year, as it seems that prices will be higher with the opening of CL and the DLH refurb. Still, if you watch for deals you can usually swing an onsite stay for a decent price.

One last piece of information about this is the fact that I usually think of a DLR trip as about 2-4 nights. Longer stays can definitely add up.

MM is only for DL not for CA. And for this summer early entry into Carsland is an important perk of staying on-site.

Ok thanks! To be honest the whole MM/AP/DCA thing is still really confusing me lol.

The funny thing is I stayed at GCH last summer at this very time because I wanted the early entry so I can hit Star Tours 2 and especially The Little Mermaid before the others and it worked! I did the MM for Star Tours and I went back to GCH so me and a friend who stayed with me could line up early to do TLM because GCH guest has 30 min early entry to the park. We were on both in about 10 mins of opening so in that sense it was worth it!

But same time, I realized lining up for TLM wasnt a big deal since that same day (and this was second day of opening) it already had 15 min waits by the end of the night. And yes Star Tours 2 was busier but I couldve just stayed at a Harbor hotel, still got the MM perk and did Star Tours as I did anyway without spending the $300 a night. So yeah its a give or take situation. I dont regret doing it, its a great place and it was only 2 nights, but I dont think I would do it JUST to get in earlier although I know for many that is the main perk for CL, so I understand that!

I think I have it figured out:

For the summer (beginning June 18):

MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY -
- EMH for DCA for Disney Resort guests
- APEE for DL (must be booked at least 3 days ahead of time)

TUESDAY, THURSDAY, SATURDAY, & SUNDAY -
- APEE for DCA (must be booked at least 3 days ahead of time)
- MM for DL for Disney Resort guests and those holding 3-day or longer park passes (pass holders have one MM, resort guests every available day throughout their stay)

So I agree that EMH to DCA for Disney resort guests is a huge perk, since SOMEONE will be in both parks early every day this summer.

Yes...on site guests will now get Tuesday Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at DL and Monday, Wednesday and Friday at DCA. Getting in early to DCA, especially for the rest of this year, is a huge perk IMO. The park hoppers usually only allow one early entry and I think only for DL. The DCA early entry, for now, is only for resort guests, I believe. I like to stay onsite, but have stayed off site when it makes sense to. For the Expos I stay at Jolly Roger..it's close to Convention Center and cheap. When I come out Sunday for the Carsland thing I'll stay at the Carousel..I won't be in the room hardly at all and it's a one night stay. For Destination D we had booked at HoJo for a couple nights before the event (at a convention in San Diego right before and not worth it to go home for 2 days then come back out) but a killer hotel deal was offered at DLH so changed all nights to that. So...depends on the trip..and for a resort trip this year, I think on site has a big benefit in its column. They may even do the fastpasses they have done in the past for resort guests and with Radiator Racers that could be a big deal indeed.

Sorry, but what is APEE? Annual Pass Early Entry??

Thanks

Yes, it's new this summer. From DLR29's amazing Super Thread:

3. Annual Pass Early Entry (APEE)

What? Entrance to Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure one hour before official park opening to ride select attractions

Who? Annual Passholders (of any of the 4 levels)

When? AP holders can register online for 1 APEE at each park (DL and DCA) between 6/18/12-9/13/12. There is no indication at this point about if APEE will continue after 9/13/12.

APEE dates are OPPOSITE of MM/EMH:
-DL APEE will be on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
-DCA APEE will be on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Like the other 2 EA options, APEE at both parks begins 1 hour before park opening.

How? You must sign up on the official DLR AP website. Each AP holder can only attend 2 APEE (1 per park) during the duration of these summer dates. Your AP must be valid on that dates that you sign up for (no block out tickets allowed). There is no extra fee for APEE. When you register for APEE you can register a party up to 8 people in size. Every person in your party attending APEE must have a valid DLR AP.

Beginning 30 minutes before APEE (so 6:30AM) registered guests may start checking in at Ticket Booth 4 (left of DCA's gates when facing them). Every person in your party must be present because they will give you special wristbands for the event. You must check-in before heading to the gates of the respective park for APEE.
