I read some horror stories about the staff here, but everyone we talked to were all totally super nice. We really loved having the big rooms. Really really loved the close walk. Pool was O.K. Breakfast was a joke, but the refrigerators are large, so we just got our own food. popcorn::

would you stay there again? i was thinking about staying there next may/june, but the indoor pool kinda makes me think twice. i think i'd want an outdoor pool especially during the late spring/early summer months...and what was part of their continental breakfast? there was a microwave in the room right?

How bad is the breakfast? We're staying there in a couple of weeks - should we just plan on stopping by the grocery store on the way?

It is a common Continental Breakfast, cereal, milk, juice, a fruit, and Danish. It was every good. Believe me I am a very picky eater. I it looks, smells bad I can stomach it. We ate very well Desert Inn and Suites.

How is the cleanliness of the rooms? Are the beds comfortable? Is it an old property?

The reason I ask is I am considering staying there in January with my mom and sister but I've heard bad things. How does it compare to Del Sol or Park Vue Inn?

We hated Del Sol. Thought it was old, outdated, small and the mattresses were awful.

Loved Park Vue Inn. Big rooms, nice breakfast, really comfortable beds.

Can anyone offer any opinions/comparisons?

I currently have hojo booked for Jan. but I know my mom would like to stay closer to crosswalk and for $10 more a night that would be worth it if Desert Inn is nice.

Thanks!
Kelly

It is very close to DLR and we walked over at night before the parade to get our jackets and glow sticks. It was so nice to not have to carry that around or spend the money for the locker. The breakfast is just ok. We bring our own oatmeal and use the milk from there and juice. We use the room for sleeping only. The rooms are clean. The only down fall is the beds and showers. The beds are so thin. Im so tired by the time we get back from the parks I could fall asleep in a chair! The showers are a blast of water:scared1: ! Im so excited to get to the parks I don't care. We have never used the pool because we spend all our time in the parks. If you are planning on using the pool stay at HOJO there pool looks fun for kids.

We hated Dessert Inn! The rooms were dirity and outdated. We were there a few months ago. Read my Tripadvisor review below:
***********************************

We booked this hotel because it was so close to the parks and had the option of suites. My toddler still naps and we wanted a quiet room for her while we watched TV in the other room. The location is PERFECT. Right across the street but the hotel itself has issues.
When we walked into our room the floor was damp and there was hair (I won’t say what kind) in the shower. YUCK! The room is very old and outdated. The bedspreads looked about 20 years old!
We were going to change hotels but we couldn’t find one in walking distance at a reasonable price so we just dealt with it.
Then on day 2 our room at 3:30 p.m. was not made up even tho we had the “maid service” sign up.
The 3nd night we were there our neighbors were so loud and we laid there for 2 hours listing to the yelling and cussing. At 11:30 p.m. I called the front desk and they sent up the security guard. It didn’t help and I had to call back 45 min later to complain again. Then about 20 min later they quieted down but woke us up early the next morning with more yelling.
I complained the next day because we only got a few hours of sleep and they said the only option was for us to move rooms. (The day manager didn’t know anything that happened the night before). So we packed up our stuff and they moved it for us. Our new room was ready by nap time. It just made me mad that WE had to move and not the people yelling all night. For all the issues we had they only gave us a $30.00 credit (big deal). I will never say at this hotel again. We have been to HoJo’s, Carousel and Aryes and they were all very nice. This place is a dump and not worth the $139.00 a night we paid.
DON’T STAY HERE!!

Wanted to add:

Keep your HoJo's reservations!!! NOT worth it. I would rather walk than than to stay at Dessert Inn again. HoJos is WAY nicer, cleaner and updated that Dessert Inn.

We have stayed at the Desert Inn and Suites on Harbor Blvd twice. It is no frills - but clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful on both visits. The bathrooms had nice tile and the water was very hot. The beds were fine for us - but we are not picky. We would have noticed too soft or lumpy.

I have not seen bad or mixed reviews on it. The Desert Inn and Suites always seems to have positive word of mouth on the DIS and in the unofficial guide and trip advisor (though I have not checked recently)

The Desert Palm Hotel and Suites on Katella was getting mixed reviews a couple of years back. I have never stayed there so I don't want to be spreading false rumors.

I just know opinions of those two hotels sometime get intertwined because of their similar names.

Thanks! I'll keep our Hojo's reservations. I wouldn't want to spoil my mom's trip to try and get closer if the place is a dump. I know she would appreciate the niceness of Hojo's more. We probably will drive and park rather than walk.

It's good to hear the staff was friendly and that the fridge is good size. We will also be in the family parlor suite and have 9 people so we need the fridge to be as big as they can give us:) We will be there very soon and I am thrilled that it is just across the street. If I were going during warmer months I would probably consider a different hotel with a nicer pool, but at the beginning of Nov. I don't think it will be an issue for us. ;)

Ok, no matter where you stay there will be good and bad reviews. Every hotel that any of us stay in is this way.

We have stayed there and had a very pleasant stay and would not hesitate to stay here again.

Our room was clean, no hair/mold in the bathroom. We really liked that it was a pretty good size, with a fridge and microwave. It is super close to the park. Continental breakfast was average, hard to screw up items that do not require cooking at all. We did not use the pool at all so I can not comment on that. Free parking, no resort fee - awesome.

It is outdated, but most on Harbor are. I know Carosel is pretty updated, but they have a $15 per day parking fee or something rediculous like that.

I hate sleeping in the same bedroom as my parents. They snore and it keeps me up all night! So whenever we go on vacation we always look for rooms with two rooms (even if it's a "living room" and separate bedroom). We had a very pleasant stay at the Desert Inn & Suites. I slept on the fold out couch bed and it was surprisingly comfortable (although I'm young so I could sleep on pretty much anything w/o issue). The bathroom was clean, and the shower was hot and lovely. Also, near the breakfast room, they have a little gift shop. They sell blankets, hats, key chains, souvenirs, over the counter medication (Advil, Motrin, Tylenol, Midol, etc.), and bunches of other things I can't remember off the top of my head. But it was a nice place to buy souvenirs. Also there are a few restaurants near by that are very good to eat at. Me and my two friends ate dinner at Captain Kidd's Buffet, it was very good and cheap to eat there.

Our friends had also checked into the Desert Inn a few days after we got there and were a couple floors below us. So it was nice to be in the same hotel as them. I and my friends did make use of the pool and hot tub. It was nice... it wasn't big but it was a decent size to swim the length of it. However, the swimming pool was not heated very well... nice on a hot day I suppose, but I only went there at night... I think it was about 5' deep (which is taller than me!). The hot tub was nice and roomy, and a very nice way to end a long day at the parks, so most of my time in the pool area was spent in the hot tub. lol.

As for the rooms themselves, they were clean, the beds were nice. I'm unsure about the maid service because we kept the do not disturb sign out the whole time we were there. (If we needed the garbage taken care of, we simply put it outside our door in the morning while we got ready for the parks.) We don't like the maids coming in and messing with things we have set up a certain way (ie I kept the couch bed folded out into a bed the whole time we were there. If we had let the maid in, she would have folded it away! Which I would have hated as all I wanted to do at the end of the day was collapse into bed! lol.) While we were there they were doing a bit of construction work or something but they did that in the mornings and during the day so it wasn't really a bother to us.

All three of us (my mom, dad and me) had rented off site scooters which they allowed us to keep plugged in, in the lobby. It was so nice to have the scooters right there in the lobby! We would get dressed, go down to the breakfast and eat, then we'd go to the lobby and ride our scooters out to the crosswalk and across the street and into the parks! Then at the end of the night, we would ride them back to the lobby, plug them in, and go back up to our room! It was awesome! All three of us have knee/leg problems and if we had tried to do Disney w/o the scooters we would have not had much fun! Both my mom's knees give her trouble (old knee injuries), My left knee gives me trouble (I fell down stairs in my college theatre and my knee hit on the edge of the stair!!), and my dad has sciatica.

I will always stay at Desert Inn & Suites when I go to Disneyland. It's close to the park, not too expensive, and had a good experiance there.

In our room the beds were very firm, but the best sleep I've had in a hotel. In the kids' room the beds had new tops on them.

For breakfast the danishes were good, but I can't eat one every morning. Cereal choices were only corn flakes (not frosted) and plain cheerios. The juice was iffy. They always had bread and a toaster. The oranges were mushy, and there was coffee and milk. There were microwaves (very low power) in the rooms.

The pool is indoors in the parking lot, but one door is always open to the air. It was just a plain pool and the hot tub was barely warmer than the pool.

Hate the showers

Much quieter on the third floor than on ground level.

I would trade the quality of HoJos for this closer place if I had small children with me that were tired and cranky (and if you wanted more than four beds). We just don't stay at the hotel long enough to make much of a difference.

I stayed there last Christmas with the family. I had a parlor suite. It was ok, but nothing great. The parking lot is terrible there. You cant beat the location. Right across the street from DL and next door to Dennys. To me, it was over priced. The rooms were not that bad, but I expected alot more for the price that I payed.

How bad is the breakfast? We're staying there in a couple of weeks - should we just plan on stopping by the grocery store on the way?

It's very basic, but it is nice to have the free juice and milk. It offers cheapo bread, costco cheapo danish (tastes pretty ok) milk juice bad coffee. Its free and you can bring your own cereal or english muffins and use theirs and add your better stuff. thats what we do. Get some Raisin bran crunch and some english muffins or bagles and use their toaster and jam and butter. Its nice not having to buy milk juice jam and butter

hey it's free
