Not sure where to post this message. I'm curious if the "Stay out of the ........lakes applies to Mickey's Retreat. I believe that there was a lake there and curious if the same risk is there and if Disney placed signs warning about the hazards of swimming in it.

There is an amoeba in a lot of natural bodies of water in Florida, something about the heat and the swampland I think.
Anyway, if you injest it or inhale it or something, it eats your brains.

How concise was I there....? *rolls eyes*

And also the Alligators and the Water moccasins are not great either for swimmers either. But the amoeba that Princess Jes discussed is the main problem.

Stick with the pools they are much safer. I do believe that Disney did put up warning signs about swimming in the lakes.

Thanks kevin.
It's sad that people are dying from something that's so easily preventable :-(

Initially, I thought stay out of the damn lakes was in reference to the guys who snuck into Discovery Island or why River Country closed.
But yes, Pete has said stay out of the damn lakes is about the bacteria!
Damn.

Yeah- a kid in the Houston area died within the last couple of days from a brain eating amoeba. Swimming in lakes...especially in lake resort and recreation communities, is commonplace all over the world. The type of amoeba in question is more prevalent in warmer climates, but you never really know if it's an issue in the area where you're swimming. Kind of like the flesh eating bacteria plaguing some beaches...you just never know. And the reality, scores of people can go swimming in these lakes and never once deal with such an amoeba. Still, I don't think we'll be taking any chances any time soon.
