Stateroom Security

I know I am probably being paranoid, but has anyone ever had anything stolen (besides pool-side deck chairs) while on board? Are there safes in the staterooms and, if so, how large are they? I am very reluctant to bring my laptop computer as I have had one stolen in the past while traveling. My husband thinks we'll need it for downloading pictures from our digital camera. I'm trying to convince him that what we really need is a new digital camera. Or we can always use the services of Shutters (how much does that cost, anyway?).

Stateroom safes are pretty small. Can hold a camera, wallet, passports, documents, but not a laptop or video camera. About the size of a shoe box. We left money and a video camera out and never worried. I guess there is always the possibility that it could happen, but the steward is the only person that will have access. There are good ways to hide things as well. under bed, in closet, under life vests, things liket that.

I have heard it is pretty expensive to have the digital photo card done at Shutters, but have never done it so can't answer with any authority, sorry.

It cost $14.95 to download photos onto a CD at Shutters. I brought my laptop & left it on the desk, never had any problems. I can see why you would be cautious with your previous experience.

I bring my Laptop, memory sticks, camcorder, and digital camera, and never had any problems. You could put the laptop in your closet when your not using it and cover it up with a towel or something small if it would make you feel safer. We even left money out one time and it was never touched.

We always put our wallets, documents, and jewerly in the safe. That stuff can easily slip into someones pocket

We brought a laptop to download pictures and left it out in our stateroom the entire trip. We didn't have any problems!

The safes are not big enough for a laptop.

I've never had anything stolen at any place associated with Disney.

I even left my camera bag at the restuarant on our last morning on the Wonder. Someone turned it in and it was rushed to the aiport for me. (Talk about a few gray hairs )

Nothing wrong with a new camera either

Or better yet, invest in some additional memory cards. Then you don't need to worry about downloading anything until you get home.

I'm not the one with THREE laptops but hey, you know, they could have GAMES on them (not work) and that would be okay on a vacation!!

Anyway, we just bough a brand new laptop specifically for our upcoming two cruises ... so we can download the digital pictures (for several people in our group) AND to download from our digital camcorder (that we haven't bought yet) ... this way we will be able to burn pics to CD and camcorder stuff to DVD (yes, it has a DVD burner).

We aren't concerned about the two digital cameras, digital camcorder or laptop being stolen from our room ... my bigger concern is having a camera lost or stolen while in port!!

Thanks for easing my mind about stateroom security. It sounds like the ship is a whole safer than anyplace I've traveled before. I guess I'm not as worried about the computer being stolen on the ship, it's getting it there. My laptop was stolen in the airport in Amsterdam right out from under my nose. And they say the pickpockets in the red light district are good. Anyways, I'm glad to know about the safe and thanks for the suggestions. If I can't convince my DH to buy a new camera, then some additional media might be in order. Even paying 14.95 to have Shutters do the download and CD isn't too bad. Certainly a whole lot cheaper than replacing a computer.

Another option would be to purchase some more memory. The price of memory has really come down.

I picked up two 256meg xD Olympus chips at Costco yesterday for about $83.00 each. Other type chips were comparably priced.

You could also borrow some chips from friends if they use the same type.

Save on memory space also by regularly deleting those photos that aren't quite as good as you might like.

In 10 cruises on the Magic, we've never had anything disappear from a stateroom. I'm not very paranoid, and probably leave more out than I should...still, no problem.

I actually left my diamond rings and a very nice watch sitting right out the little dresser shelf in the cabin. the room was cleaned while we were gone, and my jewelry was sitting right where I left it when we got back. I would not worry about your laptop, but as Steve said...it's worth it to just have the pics downloaded onto a CD at Shutters. Worth the $14.95 to not have to lug around that laptop and constantly open and turn it on through security (you'll have to do it at the airports and at the ship's terminal).

Don't think anything would be stolen, although our steward had a habit of rearraanging all our stuff on the desk. Came back with everything we had originally, but at first I was like "what the..." before I realized she was just going the extra mile. Just an FYI, they may move some things.

If you have something semi-large to keep safe (computer, video camera, etc), it can always be locked into one of your suitcases. This is semi-safe, as it will take more than a casual action to get to it and could possibly leave fingerprints. The suitcase can then be locked to the bed or closet with a cable (for the ultra worried ).

As for loosing it in the airport, I would hope you carry your laptop ont he plane with you and wouldn't set it down until you are in a safe place. If you stay at a hotel, the hotel safe can hold it (like the Hyatt at MCO) should you not want it during activities.

At work all laptop are locked to the desk with a computer lock. It reminds me of a bike lock. It connects to the side of the laptop and then you take the "chain" and wrap it around something stationary in the room. the "chain" is about 4 feet long.

Speaking of staterooms hosts/stewards having access to your rooms, how often do they come in daily and at what times? Do they ever come in while anyone's there?

Just wondering... don't want there to be any "surprises" while we're taking a nap or something!

We just returned from our 4 night Wonder cruise and we never even gave it a second thought....we left our laptop out on the dresser all the time. We did put money, passport, jewelry in the safe but did not worry about the laptop.
