Stateroom host Duties

Sorry but I don't go for this pity party of "oh it's part of their wages" or "oh they are away from their families". They took on the job. There are a million others. Im a teacher and Compared to other states and schools get paid less but no one tips us. we don't even get gifts. Stay late after school and tutor Johnny? That's nice, no extra pay or time off. Susanna wants help filling out scholarship and fafsa papers? How kind of a teacher to help, but no tips! Spend hours or days away from family chaperoning student trips? Part of duties, no extra pay. Please don't tell me "oh but it's because you love your kids, that's the real pay" because then I'll gladly say that they should love their sheets, towels, vacuum and get over the wage.

I don't get tips as a healthcare professional, but I still would tips my servers and room stewards. Those professions are tips orientated. It is irrational to compare those job to your profession. In my state, coming in early and staying late is part of the teacher's contract. If it bothers you so much to "help" your students, then STOP. Send them to their guidance counselor or college office to fill out the paper work--it's part of their job. Tell the parent to pay for a tutor--the student's grade has nothing to do with your job evaluation I'm sure. Not all teachers have to be a chaperone--talk to your UFT or Labor Relation at your district office if your district is union-free.

If gifts are important to you as a teacher, go teach lower grade. At the minimum, you will get a Christmas gift and an End of School Gift. FYI: It's mostly gift cards nowadays, and you can resell them.

All I can say is I feel sorry for you. Perhaps you are in the wrong field of work?

Tips are part of cruising. If you don't like it, don't cruise.

I always tip & don't have a dog in this fight, but if you really believe the bolded, then you are not up-to-date on the modern educational system.

seriously? so you work straight through the summer? yeah, i didn't think so.
if you don't like helping kids, get a different job. i would HATE for my kid to have you as a teacher; you're extremely negative.
As far as "tips" as a teacher, well, I find this absurd that you say you don't get recognition. The parents and children in my DDs class gave her 1st grade teacher an iPad for Christmas and they are ALWAYS asking for money for things to give her teacher for appreciation days, birthdays, etc. Also with Scholastic Books, they ALWAYS ask us to send in the proofs of purchase on grocery items or buy books at the book fair or through their online portals because the more proofs of purchase, the more $$ the school gets and the more books we buy, the more FREE books the teacher receives for her class. How can you NOT consider these items "gratuities?"
I would suggest you get a new job.

While the 'tipping' post from Odalally13 is not very 'pc' it does bring up an issue. We've only been on one DCL and the gratuities were included - 3 envelopes were left in our room and we're hoping one was for the room stewards as the only title we recognized was the dinner server (who wasn't that great). Frankly, I am still trying to understand the tipping procedure. We try to tip well 20-25% without going crazy but I do get irritated when I am sticking a gratuity chit into an envelope of someone who I don't know.

We were on a short cruise and had 3 different room stewards but only one was really nice - the others were irritated that we were trying to use our room.

I believe the one for your "room steward" says "stateroom host" as that is what DCL calls them.

The procedure on DCL is that they will automatically charge $12.00 per day per guest in your room to your onboard account. That $12.00 breaks out to: $4.00 per guest per day to your stateroom host; $4.00 per guest per day to your dining room server; $3.00 per guest per day to your assistant server; and $1.00 per guest per day to your head server (dining room manager).

At the end of the cruise you will receive a sheet and tip envelopes in your room with perforated sections indicating the name and position, as well as tip amount, for each person receiving them.

You separate the sections and place each in the proper envelope (position title on envelope) for handing out the last night/day. At this time, if you wish, you may add additional cash to the envelope. The suggested gratuities (that $12.00 per day) are in line with the norm in the cruise industry.

Actually I do work through the summer. My field requires it. I also teach high school students so no book fairs, no class gifts. I'm not negative, I'm realistic. I'm trying to teach them that the real world isn't all sunshine and roses and freebies. Truthfully with the students we have they DO believe everything will be given to them and they should do nothing.

As for not being "Pc" I made no disparaging remarks about any certain group or anything of that sort.

I believe tipping should always be optional and at the tipper's discretion. If a company feels a tip should be required, then they should up their wages to however much the person should be making with tips. THEN any tipping is a bonus.

I guess I won't be seeing you on my upcoming cruises.

Thank you for posting this - very appreciated :) :)
We left the envelopes in the room - was that OK? Seriously, cause I don't like chasing down people and we didn't use the restaurants after the 1st night.

We were assuming the Dinning Server was the guy who insisted on bring me an entree I didn't want along with the vegetarian one I selected which made me wonder ....

So who was the Assistant Server and the Head server? I don't remember a 4th envelope and am hoping that is because it was 3 years ago or we stiffed the room guys which was not our intention. I will say we didn't add anything to the envelopes because the only people we were impressed with was the bar staff and we tipped them as we bought.

well that's odd considering i have LOTS of friends whom are teachers and they ALL get time off during the summer. i still think you should probably pick a different profession. maybe try working in the service industry and then see if you feel the same way LOL.

Head server is the person in charge of making sure your servers are doing their job (also comes around each evening to make sure "everything is excellent"). Server is the person who takes your food order and serves your food. Assistant server takes/serves drink orders and clears the table between courses.

Beverage orders (bars/lounges, and at dinner for paid beverages) have an automatic 15% gratuity added. To be pooled and divided by all drink servers and bartenders. If you add additional cash to that, it goes directly (and only) to the person (server/bartender) you direct it to.

As noted, even if you don't hand out the gratuity slips/envelopes those persons indicated will get those tips.

You don't have to give them the envelopes, the tips will be paid to them as you instructed.
Check the names though if you do that as if there made out to the wrong person and there isnt a ticket it goes to the wrong person.

Yes... its happened to me... so not in theory..

Best advice (1) check the names (2) hand the tickets over.

IMHO Not handing them over is dangerous advice.

I teach in the NYC city-wide special ed district where our students are entitled to year-round school, so they do need teachers. But we are paid for summer school work at a contract negotiated rate. And those who each general ed who teach summer school are paid per-session for that. But anyone who elects to work during the summer is paid.

I agree that is is weird for teachers to be expected to work during the summer without being paid for it - which is certainly how she makes it sound in her world.

We never went back to the 'servers' area after the first night so they received their $36 for one night of ... service, but what do you mean 'its happened to me'?

Well I thought I had posted exactly that but I will expand more then.

On one cruise, ( and I have posted this before here and more confirmed it has happened to them). I paid my tips and the names on them were checked.

Often your servers have short nicknames so its good to understand their full names, so I had them written down.

The ticket for my head server was incorrect, the name was completely wrong.

I checked guest services they said its OK, if you just hand your ticket over to the correct person they will get it and bank it, I asked them but what would occur if I didn't hand it over? So GS said we will change them for you. I asked the head server that night about it, he said that DCL had not updated their files for him correctly, the name quoted was a prior head servier on the previous cruise. He said well done for changing it, it is an issue, if people do not hand the tickets over the wrong servers get the tip.

There so it happened to me. People can ignore it if they want but if you do not hand your tickets over mistakes can occur that is the safety net.

I have a friend who works for the a School District in NE PA and they started requiring them to work thru the summer without an increase in pay but at reduced hours from the 'normal school year'.
