Starwood Gold Card Question

I just received our new "Preferred Plus" card. We have the Starwood American Express card and thought we automatically would continue to receive a "Gold" card. I called SPG and she said I would now only get the preferred card. When did this change?? Is there any way to get the gold card without the required number of nights?

I think that with the SPG Gold you either have to have a certain number of stays at a Starwood hotel or if you have a Platinum AMEX. I"ve never looked at the definitions of the Gold Card. Maybe you could request a list of the requirements from spg.com.

You get gold status from some promotions or owning Starwood property. If you don't have either than it is based on number of stays per year. If you do not continue that many stays than the next year you will go back to Starwood Preferred.

used to me much easier to get. In fact, I first got ours just because I had the Starwood AMEX card. They have done away with that now (although I do see on some other board that some have called Starwood and gotten lucky with a gold card from a customer service rep that either did not know or did not follow the rules) and are using the number of required stays for the upgrade to Gold.

You automatically get Gold if you are an Amex Platinum card holder which is $$$$ a year. You don't get it with the Starwood Amex card. It's always been this way. Some people were lucky enough to get Gold with the Starwood Amex but they shouldn't of. I think people thought they qualified because it was the silver colour of the Platinum card. Starwood is checking this more closely now.
