Anyone have any insights as to how to score a discount for Starwood, Westin hotels? I need 2 nights midweek in DC and it's expensive!
TIA!:flower3:

Are you an SPG member? Any good deals that they have are normally going to be extended to SPG members, and usually involve cash/points combos. DC has those available a lot of the time, but not in high tourist season, so you won't find them during Cherry Blossom time or around July 4th, for example.

If you have SPG points you can exchange them for free stays. If you have a friend or relative working at Starwood they get pretty deep discounts and can extend them to immediate family or friends. If non of those things apply you should call the 800 number for Westin and ask what kind of promos are available. There are tons of discounts that are never or rarely advertised. You can get a discount if you have AAA or if you're over 60, if you stay for 3 nights many locations will give you a discount where you pay full price for the first night and get the next 2 for 40% off and it goes on and on. Many corporations have discounts with Starwood too. If you work for a big company like IBM or McDonalds and have employee ID you may qualify for a discount. If you work for the government and have government ID you may qualify too. Think about where you work and any memberships you may have and call in and see. You may be surprised.

Ummmm, OK with all except the part about a Starwood employee extending discounts to friends. DD is an employee, and her discount only applies to parents, siblings, spouse and children. It's a great rate, though!

That's Starhot...there's also Starfriends...not as good a discount but still cheaper than rack

If you're an SPG member, you can purchase points, I believe starting as low as 500 for I think $17. If you are just enough short, sometimes it is cheaper to buy a few and do points and cash. We did that in Dec for 1 night at the Sheraton Safari. I was short by maybe 300 points, so even purchasing a few plus the cash portion was less than $50, I couldn't find any other discount that brought it down that much.

Sometimes, they offer 20% off the purchase of additional points.

We are SPG members but rarely use it. So much so that when I tried to log in, it said that due to inactivity I would have to call to reinstate my membership! We are usual Hilton people but DH has to stay at this particular hotel. It's looking like upwards of $500 for 2 nights and that's more than I would like to pay :)

Thats one problem with SPG points. You have to use them or you can lose them. You should call. I'd be surprised if an agent on the phone couldn't find something
