Starting to get nervous about our trip in August.

We could wake up at 4am and something would still cause us to miss rope drop. lol In my 12+ trips I have never seen rope drop but have come close many times. It is actually not that bad as we generally just miss the rush and enjoy main street etc.

We heard nothing but horror stories about summer and to be honest it was one of our best trips ever. Loved it! Look at the bright side you will save on food because who wants to eat in heat. Just bring lots of water and money for ice cream which was our dinner several times. How fun! lol We brought the big smart waters and everyone carried one. It was not cumbersome as we were drinking it constantly.

Here are some tips to survive Disney World in the hot, humid month of August:

1. Stay hydrated. Approach all quick service restaurants to set up a system where if they see you running up to the counter to just hand you 2 cups of water like a marathon runner. Request one cup with no ice. This is your "splash" cup. You throw this water on your face. The second cup is for drinking. If for whatever reason you cannot get to one of these restaurants, just look around... tons of other people have drinks! Bottle of Dasani next to the honeymooners? Take it! Gatorade on that baby stroller? It's yours! DRINKS ARE EVERYWHERE!

2. Your clothes will get sweaty. All you have to do is just go into one of the many shops at the World and find a shirt you like. Remove your shirt and put this new treasure on. Replace your sweaty, gross, used shirt with the new one and hang it back up. Problem solved!

3. Need a shower? Head to a bathroom. There's a sink with soap. Scrub-a-dub-dub! Bonus: The toilets make a GREAT foot bath. Don't worry, it's fine! Disney keeps those things super clean!

4. Hungry? Go into a restaurant and sit next to a nice family. Comment on their food- "Oh, wow! What is that? That looks delicious!" After they tell you, feel free to sample off their plates! Especially if they have an infant! I mean, that baby can't eat that much, right?!

By the way, don't do any of this. Everyone else has given some good advice. I just wanted to have fun with it.

This is the only time we can go during the year. August 2014, 5 year old and a 10 month old. They both survived. The heat bothers us old people not the kiddos. Nothing to worry about. We will be there in August again this year. I'll buy ya a beer to cool you down if you are warm.

I'll take you up on that offer!

We have gone in middle to late August a few times and are doing it again this year. The heat doesn't bother us much, but we get to the park for opening, drink lots of water, take breaks in the air conditioning and usually do a table service lunch. We go back to the resort for swimming and relaxing, then sometimes go back to the parks for evening. We spend a couple of days sleeping in and going later to the parks.

While it doesn't apply to the OP because they have little kids and would not be likely to imbibe, I would add to be VERY careful of the frozen alcohol drinks at the non-MK parks (or MK, if they offer them there). My wife had a frozen margarita (I think) in AK and nearly passed out from the combination of sugar, dehydration, heat and alcohol. So if you do plan to drink, be wary because when you combine it with heat, it comers up on you FAST.

OP . . .First off, it is not as bad as you are expecting it to be.

Don't get me wrong, it is hot, really hot, and humid.

Now that we have that out of the way, many of the attractions, and even the lines to wait for them are indoors, or shaded with fans, and sometimes even misters, to keep you from melting in the heat. Drink plenty (free ice water at any quick service location), drink frequently, take advantage of shops with air conditioning to walk through when ever you can. If you start to feel the heat is getting to you, get out of it for a while, sit down, have a drink, or two. As long as you stay hydrated, and give yourself a break from the heat when you need it, it will be fine.

We visit in August every summer, and have a great time every year!

I highly recommend the Tropicwear clothing from LL Bean. It's expensive, but I try to buy it during one of their daily markdown offerings when available.

I used to avoid all synthetic fabrics as the old polyester fabrics were brutal in the heat. Then I discovered that new wicking synthetics. Lightweight and breathable. It also lasts forever.

It sounds counter intuitive, but I prefer long sleeves if I am going to be out in the sun for long periods of time - like at summer ball games.

As someone who lives in that climate (sorta) (Coastal NC) there is a big difference between mowing your lawn in that sort of heat and humidity and going on vacation in it :). Drink lots and rest

My family went in late August of 2015 and yep ..It was fine in the EARLY mornings (thank you EMH), hot and steamy in the mid-mornings, but you are in/out of attractions, notice it much. A long lunch to rejuvenate in the A/C and refuel helps a lot

What is good/bad is the rain. It probably will rain every afternoon. It cools things off, but you have to run for cover. So plan accordingly (ponchos!).

We still had a GREAT time .. the weather (short of a hurricane) wouldn't put a damper on my enjoyment of Disney .. but you DO have set your expecations and have ways to beat the heat suggested above.

Moisture wicking clothing is your friend! Look for them at places like Target in the athletic clothing section. You can even buy underwear and socks that are moisture wicking (Hanes now makes them, and they're so much better than regular underwear!) You will see people who recommend wearing cotton, but it can get wet and sweaty, and won't dry.

Stroller fans for your little one! Walmart.com currently has one for half price around $5. I just ordered 2 for our upcoming labor day trip to silver dollar city!

We went in August last year, and are going again this year, so it couldn't have been that unbearable for us. All QS locations give free water, so take advantage of that. Also, last year we purchased aome hydrating chews on Amazon (similar to Gatorade chews) that helped. We also purchased peraonal fans that you wear around your neck. Just hop into shops or restrooms if you need the a/c. You'll be fine. I'd rather be sweating my rear off at WDW than cool and comfy anywhere else!

I've been going crazy preparing for my upcoming August trip. We typically go in Feb. Or April. I've always worn all cotton clothing but wasn't looking forward to soggy underthings which I know they will be by probably 10 am each day. So I've been stocking up on moisture wicking stuff - bras, underwear, visors, and some of those athletic skorts. I've never bought or worn athletic wear before so I'm curious to see how they feel. Also have bought Frogg Toggs and misting fans. The worst will be when it rains and we have to put the ponchos on in 100-degree heat......blech, those things are unbearable in the heat. At that point, I may opt to just get drenched!

I've gone in Aug. Before but without kids so it was a lot of laying by pools and sitting at bars......this will be the first time conquering all the parks in the heat.
