Starting to get nervous about my upcoming c-section...

I've had two, the first was an emergency the second was planned. The planned was so much better, you don't have to go through hours of labor, you can get a good nights sleep beforehand. Make sure you ask for your pain medication every 3 or 4 hours depending on the hospitals policy. At my hospital they also gave me an ibuprofen every 6 hours. It made such a big difference from the percocets alone.

I had two C-sections.... I ate right away (they did not want me to, but I was STARVING!) walked that afternoon (surgery was at 8:00 a.m.) and went home early the next morning, up the stairs to our apartment! I managed pain with ibuprofen and did great.

I think a good deal of it is your attitude.... you'll do great. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions! Good luck!!

I had a c-section with my first after 14 hours of labor and dilating only to 5. The recovery was long. Because I hadn't planned for it, I was totally unprepared. So PREPARE yourself.

Two suggestions that helped me (from a nurse friend). Get a small travel size pillow. Hold it against your belly, when you cough, when you get up, when you feed the baby. It was great to use as support as well as a protective barrier. Second, my nurse friend brought me a Frosty when I was still on my soft diet. The best thing I had ever eaten. :)

One more thing-the hospital gave me a band thing to wear around my belly. I loved it! It gave me extra support as well.

Good luck and no matter what, you'll have a beautiful baby and lots of time to just sit and stare..........

You have gotten some great advice. Get up and moving. Take the pain meds every 4 hours so it doesn't come on strong. W/o the meds it really hurts! But with them it's fine. I was like lisajl, my placenta abrupted, and had an emergency C. THe only thing that I didn't have complications from was the C! It went very smoothly and really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I'm such a wimp! But it wasn't really that bad. Just take it easy and it sounds like your DH will be there long enough for you get get back to normal. TAKE IT EASY!

DD was a planned c-section because she was breech and stubborn - that child just would not turn! I have to say, after hearing other stories and watching many episodes of A Baby Story;), I don't think a c-section, especially a planned one is all that bad. It was great being able to plan everything out and not having contractions was another bonus! The funny thing was saying, "oh she is coming on April 24" and people not believing me! We had the surgery on Mon morning and we went home on Fri. DH stayed with us most of the time but I sent him home to sleep, poor man. I had a spinal, rather than an epidural and it is weird to not be able to move your legs, but that feeling goes away pretty fast, about half an hour. Even with the spinal, you can still fell tugging and pulling, but don't let it freak you out, you won't feel pain. The other thing you might experience is "referred" pain. My chest started to hurt and I felt like it was hard to breathe, but it was normal and the docs were able to help me right away. You stay in recovery until you can move, but DD was with us most of the time. I am intolerant to morphine so I had shots of Darvon I think, until they let me have food and then a prescription, percocet maybe? the rest of the week. By the time I went home, I didn't even take a scrip with me, just some ibuprofen when I started to hurt.

There are two hard things about a c-section: 1) you can't drive for at least two weeks - I was told this is in fear of you getting in an accident and the incision splitting open; and 2) stairs HURT! We lived in a second floor condo and I was fine until the dog had to go out. For me, that was the hardest part because I felt trapped until DH came home but that didn't last too long either.

Some advice (and excuse me if I repeat others):

1. Get up and move even if it hurts. The nurses will make you move and cough so you don't develop blood clots and walking around hurts a lot less than forced coughing!

2. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you get home. You won't be allowed to lift anything heavier than the baby for a few weeks so groceries and laundry can be difficult.

3. Let other stuff go and concentrate on the baby. Everything else can wait. You are healing from major surgery, dealing with massive hormonal changes and trying to take care of a helpless little creature, the dishes can wait!

Really, I think c-sections are a pretty good way to have a baby, especially if the outcome is a happy and healthy mom and baby! Good luck and please ask more questions if you need to!

Even more great advice-THANKS! I will definitely get out of bed as soon as they allow me to even if it hurts. From what you all said this will make a BIG difference in my recovery and that was my main concern.I will also ask for the pain meds every 3/4 hours as needed. I don't tolerate drugs well so I can imagine I will be a bit loopy!!LOL I think the policy is 3 days in the hospital after a c-section(maybe 5) and I will probably stay that amount of time. Although I can see myself wanting to get home to DS and DH so who knows.I guess I'll wait to see how the healing is going to decide that one!!!! I can't plan everything although I would like to! I know I am going to be grossed out by the "tugging" but I'll take that over 24 hours of labor! Glad I don't have to go through contractions this time! That was NO fun. My sister and DH are going to be in the OR with me so that should be interesting! My DH will probably be watching the whole thing although he saw one in nursing school and said it was pretty hard to watch!!LOL My sister won't even peak or she will pass out so she will right up near my head.
Thanks again for all the good wishes and advice! I needed it!!!!
