I know this may seem a little early to ask this question, but hope all understand.

For the people in Florida and the South (Carolina's, Georgia, etc)
When does school start again for you in August? :)

My kids start school on Tuesday Aug 13. We are in North Carolina. -HM

We're in Mississippi. Last year the teachers in our district started on August 1st, and the students started a couple of days after that. Different districts have different starting dates, but they're almost all back in school by the second week of August.

Connecticut starts early Sept. Which cracks me up, they should be taking advantage of the warmer months rather than extending the school year because of early closings and winter cancellations!

Great minds and all that....I looked this up yesterday intending to start a thread on this subject.

GA:

Cobb COunty, Gwinnet County, DeKalb County---August 12

Colorado mine starts july 30th talk about no summer..

I live in NJ...the last day of school is June 21 in our district. The first day back to school is Sept 4. I'm just curious...for those that go back to school so early, when do they get out for the summer?

I am in Jacksonville. I teach in Duval County and we started back on Aug 1st this year and the kids get out on May 23rd. (teachers on May 28--one day after Memorial--go figure?)
Anyway, we are schedule to start at the begining of Aug next year as well as the bordering St. Johns County (who started in late Aug. this year)...
Hope this helps.

In Buncombe County (western NC), we often start the first or second week of August (a Monday prior to the 10th).

The projected last day of school is always mid-May but, it gets delayed most years to late May (even into early June) for snowcast days. ;) Here, there are very few snow plows, many narrow, winding, steep mountain roads and such wet, icy snow that the forecast of ANY snow ANYWHERE in the county results in county-wide school closings - and a SERIOUS run on milk & bread in every store in the county! LOL!

So far, we're at May 28th this year. Had some heavy flurries in the county today - no school! ;) As usual, everything melted by noon. :)

Bump this up!

There seems to be some other interested people
in reference to this topic. Hopefully there will be
some more posts with their school start dates for 2002?:D

I live in PA, and my kids don't start until Sept 5.

Here in N FL we will start back Aug 20th this year. A little later than last year.:)

ncbyrne---We go back mid-August and get out Memorial Day Friday. (the Friday of Memorial Day weekend).

Just curious do you guys pull your kids out of school to go to Disney? I have/will be 8 year old that I am thinking of pulling out for 8 days while we go in Oct. But am feeling a little guilty about that. How about you guys what do you do? Apparently I need to make myself feel better.

Just some insight into why some of the schools have shifted a few weeks. Our school (west coast of Florida) now gets out
May 24th this year - and starts back early August. They shifted it back two weeks because before the kids would go
on Christmas break and come back with just two weeks left in the semester. Now they end the semester - go on
Christmas break and come back to start a new semester. It makes a lot more sense to me - but still seems odd since
I was used to summer break being early June - late August.

I personally don't think I'd pull my son out for 8 days for a vacation. Maybe a day or two to extend a weekend or
a holiday. I know some districts you have to get it approved - here you can't have more than 5 unexcused days
off and still pass. But I think it isn't too hard to get them excused - though I've never tried.

If your child is an adequate student, there's no reason why he/she can't miss school (as long as the missed work is done). If you can find out ahead of time, you might even be able to do the "make-up" work before you leave. The trip will be with him/her much longer than those days in school would be.

You probably do need to clear it with your school first. Many schools are very helpful in this type of situation, but some districts really try to make it hard on you to be out. They may like to sound like their primary interest is the education of your child, but they are also interested in funding which is attendance related (I spent several years in school administration).

Good luck!

We're a suburb of Houston & we are starting about the 15th of August.

We're in CT and we usually go back after Labor Day. This fall the talk is that we will be going back on Aug. 26th but that's not confirmed yet. Rumor has it we may go back on Aug. 19th because of a new high school being built that is scheduled for completion in Jan. 2003. If the project is completed on time, they want us to have two weeks off in Feb. 2003 rather than one week so we may start this fall even earlier. Wish they would make up their minds and let us know a definite date.
