So, my son is getting interested in Star Wars, so I thought he'd like the Clone Wars TV series. However - when I search for "clone wars" on Amazon I get:

The Clone Wars movie
The 2 seasons of the TV series (still on)
The microseries
Clone Wars: A Galaxy Divided
Clone Wars: Clone Commandos

How do I make sense of it all....help!!

I wouldn't buy them. I would watch them on tv. Do you have a DVR? Tape them. There is usually a new episode on every week.

The Clone wars movie is the one that was in the theaters and came out before the series, it has all the characters that are in the series.

the two seasons are the TV shows that are on now except it is in the 3rd season now.

The microseries is a series on cartoon network from several years ago was on cartoon network and they are short.

Clone wars galaxy divided is an on-line game (an MMO)
clone commando is also a video game it is a first person shooter.

I had to consult my Star Wars expert-my DS 12, any other questions let me know

What age range are they aimed at? My son will be 5.....but he's only seen Episode 4....will he "get" them?

The movie yes and he would get most of the series. My son said that last season they had a few that were a few episodes interconnected but I think he would understand enough to like them. I'd buy season 1 tho so he can learn the characters.

even tho we DVR the episodes when they are on My DS still buys the season when they come out because it is so much nicer than dealing with commercials and the quality is good. You can usually find them on sale from 20ish to 26. He just waits a bit and they go on sale.

My son was about 5-6 when the micro series came on and he liked those.

just reread your question and When you say episode 4 you mean of the TV series or of the Star Wars movies? because the TV series is different, although it does have a few of the same characters in it.

Does your son have all the real Star Wars movies? cause that would be a good thing to buy him also and they are very reasonable especially the original 3.

We have had practically 100% Star Wars Christmases since he was about 4!

Sorry - I meant Ep V the film (A New Hope).

So - ask the expert to rank the titles I listened in terms of desirability for a 5 year old....

He said I'd start with the original 3 movies ep 4,5,6.

Then the next 3 real movies the new ones episode 1,2,3 (but some parents don't like 3 cause it has a violent ending, just thought I'd let you know)

then either the first season of the TV show and or Clone wars animated movie

I don't think you can go wrong with the original 3 star wars movies!

Soon it will be the figures, ships and vehicles, then Lego sets, Books, Miniatures and cards, computer games, video games...........

In fact he has Star wars force unleashed 2 for the xbox on his list for this year along with some Lego sets so we are still having Star Wars Christmases

I own all of the movies - I just think sometimes they're hard to follow for kids.

How easy is the TV series to follow for a 5-year-old?

Is it too violent? Dark?

I guess my concern is: Is there too much mythology wherein a kid will get lost?

He says they tell the same sort of story and he doesn't consider either the movies or the animated series to be "dark" in nature. Same amount of violence there are always space fights! but less realistic cause the animated series is of course animated and of a definite animated feel not like some of the video games.

I don't see Mythology in the movies or the series . It is just typical action adventures set in a star wars theme.

I think the original 3 Star Wars movies had very simple easy to follow themes and I guess based on that the animated series is more like the newer 3 as far as following but all of them can be followed on the surface as just fun good adventure movies.

I think he would like the animated movie or the series. You have time tho before Christmas rent the animated movie and let him watch it. If he likes it get season 1 for Christmas, or both seasons depending on how much you want to spend. Or he may want the movie to!

Not really. He might enjoy them, but he's not going to totally understand them, especially at first, b/c they happen BEFORE episode 4. He won't know who Anakin is, who Amidala is, etc etc. They show baby-Jabba which is hard to follow at first.

I think they are very dark and scary. My 6 year old disagrees. They are violent, but not gory as far as I can tell. And they keep fighting the SAME people, so obviously people aren't getting *killed* it seems.

I'm sure he will soon figure things out, especially if you make sure to explain who these people are. I think that DS has figured out the stories better than I have, LOL. But DS has seen episodes 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 (not 3 b/c of the padawans and Anakin, and I haven't even seen it b/c of that and other things I don't want to watch), and I think that 1 and 2 give him the framework to understand who these people are. But boy oh boy did Anakin have a lot of adventures before going bad! (and actually I think the cartoons would be in between ep 2 and 3 of the movies, b/c of course cartoon Amidala isn't married to him or pregnant in them, which, as I think about it, makes sense b/c it's called the Clone Wars series LOL)

So long story short, explain the framework and characters, and I'm sure he'll enjoy them and start to understand them well...it might just take some time. DS has required help from hubby and uncle, both of whom will watch them with him, unlike me (I can't even stand the SOUND of the Clone Wars series!).
