Star Trek fans - quick question

Sorry, wrong, the NBC execs thought at the time that having a "women" in a position of power was not acceptable, and would not allow the character(She was #1 2nd in command of the ship in the pilot). Rodenberry however wanted his women to be in the series so he later brought her back as a "hot" blond nurse, a role that was acceptable to the suits at NBC (I think it was NBC, one of the big networks.)

You know why Jeff Hunter was not used as the Captain and William Shatner came in instead?

Yep, I was wrong. I was just guessing. It was NBC, by the way.

Hey I was at that very first Star Trek Convention in 1972 too!! I have alot of great photos with Jimmy Doohan, George Takei, and Walter Koenig!! What a riot that was!!!!

I went to several conventions in the late 70's and early 80's, saw many of the orignal stars, but I am soooo jealous of you right now...

I do remember reading something about why they dropped Hunter (by the way, he wound up in Eurpoe doing spaghetti westerns until he died in 1969).

Majel Barrett is naturally a brunette -- as was #1, as was Christine Chapel in the movies, and as was Lwaxana Troi on Next Geenration. She married Roddenberry during the run of the show.

and yes, a brunette was considered more "no nonsense", but yes, they dropped her as first officer because they couldn't envision a woman as second in command. so they dyed her hair blonde and made her a nurse.

TOV, you're to young to realize what a groundbreaking show the original series was.

or what great writing --- do you have any idea the caliber of the writer who came up with "City on the Edge of Forever"? (it was harlan Ellison, by the way).

You are CORRECT ding ding ding. And yes City on the Edge of Forever was probably the best episode in my opinion, very well written.

What are some of your other favorites. I loved Return of the Archons, and Mudds Women, but there were tons of good ones.

And the person that says the New Gen was better than the original series???? No offense but thats  talk.

So anyone watching the Voyager marathon all week on SPIKE? I forgot how much I loved Voyager.
I have to agree with TOV about TNG... TNG was great. I love TOS, but TNG is my fav by far.
I like the 1st season of Enterprise, and loved the 3rd (other than the series finale which sucked)

the first season of TNG was awful...they were trying to find their own identity, and had a lot of missteps along the way.

I did like the show, though, and Voyager -- DS9 wasn't as good, but Enterprise was definitely the worst series.

the NBC execs who told Gene that a woman couldn't be a first officer -- imagine their reaction to Captain Janeway, if you will.

my favorites from the orginal series -- City on the Edge of Forever (yes, that was Joan Collins!), Amok time, Journey to Babel and Trouble with Tribbles.

I totally agree, we both must be old school. :smokin:
Do you know why the little tube that Scotty used to get inside to "fix" whatever problems that happen to be arising at the time was called the "Jeffries Tube"?

For Christmas I got my dh the dvd set of the Star Trek CARTOON series! Never heard of it until I saw it in Target a couple weeks back! :thumbsup2

I liked TNG but the first year was rather lame. I loved Data...

Data kind of grew on me, but to me he was kinda like the poor mans version of a re-hashed Mr. Spock.

I like Borgs and Ferengees. Bet they would be fun to party with. :woohoo:

The Animated Series is great. Not only does most of the cast come back to do voice work, the writing was in some cases better than the live action series.

And since they were not limited to special effects and makeup, the aliens and planets could get far more interesing.

The farengis came from the animated series originally, didn't they?

Hmmm interesting, I'll see if anyone has those for rent, never got to check those out.

Pilots are often scrapped or rewritten or recast. That's why they are called "pilots", meaning test pilot episodes shown to networks & head execs. They are often shot 6 months to a year before a decision has to be made. Once an actor contracts to star in a pilot (& paid big bucks for it,) he's contractually "on hold" in case they do make a series out of it, and cannot star in another pilot that same year until he's released from the current one.

In this case, I think I remember reading, it was what someone else wrote, that Hunter wanted to concentrate on films and declined filming the second pilot. he must have been released from the first pilot then & free to decline the second one.

From what I heard Jeffrey Hunter had a huge ego and thought he was on the verge of being a big movie star, so he snubbed the Star Trek series. Guess it didn't really pan out, because other than a small part in the Longest Day, I don't recall another movie he was in. He was a good lookin cat though.

LOL I've always said it got good once Riker grew a beard
It seems like it took them forever the figure out Deanna's personality/style. First she was an emotional go-go girl, then a cold mannequin. Finally they let her dress and act normal LOL

Yeah, TNG didn't start getting good until the third season. I wish they had let the "Imzadi" storyline go on a bit more. (Naturally! :teeth: )

I'll bet Denise Crosby is kicking herself for leaving the series. She had a big ego too, saying the show was boring, and she wanted out to do more exciting projects. She could be sitting fat on residual checks now had she stayed the full years.

Michelle Forbes (Ro Laren) was offered to star in DS9. The series was supposed to be developed around her character. When she declined, they created the role of Kira Nerise instead. At least Forbes did have a career after TNG with the tv show Homicide.

She had a great, but short, part on the new Battlestar as well.

Forbes made the soap opera rounds before landing in TNG. Aparently she didn't like working/staying in once place too long. It wasn't so much about ego with er, as it was her not wanting to be locked into a contract at that time.

Crosby OTOH like you said, it sounds as if it were all ego for her.

Crosby couldn't have hated it too much. She certainly made enough "guest" Trek appearances after leaving.

Probably the residuals from the episodes she was in started to run out. And those exciting projects she was hoping for never appeared.

Terry Farrell (Dax) also left for greener pastures. (Becker starring Ted Danson.) While I hated to see her character (semi) killed off, I understood her need to leave. Female actresses have a shorter timespan when it comes to being able to be cast in certain type of roles before they are considered too old. (Goldie Hawn's character in The First Wives Club talked about the different types of roles: Ingenue, Sexy Leading Lady, Attorney, Mother of Ingenue, Mother of Leading Lady, Character/Old Woman.)

I think that's why almost all of the women ended up leaving the Law & Order's and NYPD Blue after a time, while the male actors stayed much longer.

I actually know two men who were offered regular roles in the later Star Treks and turned them down. They didn't want to be stuck known only in the one role. One of them Paul Terrell Clayton went on to star in Six Feet Under. :thumbsup2
