Was the original series (with William Shatner & Leonard Nimoy) only 3 seasons?

I ordered 3 seasons as a Christmas gift and it says, "The Complete Original Series." I thought it was on longer than that...but what do I know?

I believe that I did read somewhere that "although it was a 'five-year mission,' the series only lasted for three years" or something to that effect.

It was sadly only 3 seasons, so you bought ALL the episodes. All the other series, except the most recent Enterprise, were 7 seasons.

I just looked it up

Star Trek is a science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry which aired from September 8, 1966 through September 2, 1969. 80 episodes were produced, 79 of which were aired

My understanding is that it really wasn't all that popular at the time. It really found new life and became the cult classic it is today through syndication.

It kinda sucked that it was only a 3 season show to begin with, but the first series was kind of lame. It only became a GREAT series when TNG was released. :teeth:

Except for Enterprise, which sucked mightily.

Where did you find that? I'm interested in finding out about the missing episode. I wonder if is the pilot. Parts of it were used in an episode that aired. They used the parts as flashbacks to a previous asignment of Spocks.

Yes I believe that the episode that did not air was called "The Cage" and was the original pilot with Captain Pike, that was later canobolized into the 2 part episode "The Menagerie." So it really did air, just not in the original form. When Spock, kirk and the Commodor are all watching the transmission from Talos 4, that is pretty much the entire The Cage episode.

And yes I am a huge nerd made from parts from lessor nerds. :lmao:

Psst, I was there. :thumbsup2

It wasn't really popular and was going to be cancelled once before it finally was cancelled. However, Star Trek had a small, but fanatical following that really never let go.

When the movies finally came out, it appealed to a whole new generation. While the show isn't on tv anymore, at least new ones, the books continue to sell well.

Yup, it was called "The Cage" and Jeffrey Hunter played Captain Pike.

Well why don't we just keep the Star Trek trivia going.

Does anyone know why the series did not continue after the original pilot with Jeffrey Hunter as the Captain?

Also, does anyone know why the original pilot "The Cage" had Gene Rodenberrys wife as #1 with a brunette hairdew, and she later appeared in the series as the Nurse with blond hair?

Hey, I'm such a geek that I saw The Cage at the very first Star Trek convention in 1972. It was Gene Roddenbery's personal copy, 65 minutes in black and white.

As far as why Majel Barrett (who wasn't married to Roddenbery at the time) was a brunette in that, I think it probably had a lot to do with the character, who was supposed to be a tough, emotionless woman (Spock had emotions in the Cage), and, owing to the cliches of the time, it was probably thought that a blonde might be too feminine.

Sorry, wrong, the NBC execs thought at the time that having a "women" in a position of power was not acceptable, and would not allow the character(She was #1 2nd in command of the ship in the pilot). Rodenberry however wanted his women to be in the series so he later brought her back as a "hot" blond nurse, a role that was acceptable to the suits at NBC (I think it was NBC, one of the big networks.)

You know why Jeff Hunter was not used as the Captain and William Shatner came in instead?

Because he was dead Jim.

oh wait....no that was wrong. He wanted to concentrate on films and declined filming the second pilot

Hey I was at that very first Star Trek Convention in 1972 too!! I have alot of great photos with Jimmy Doohan, George Takei, and Walter Koenig!! What a riot that was!!!!

I do remember reading something about why they dropped Hunter (by the way, he wound up in Eurpoe doing spaghetti westerns until he died in 1969).

Majel Barrett is naturally a brunette -- as was #1, as was Christine Chapel in the movies, and as was Lwaxana Troi on Next Geenration. She married Roddenberry during the run of the show.

and yes, a brunette was considered more "no nonsense", but yes, they dropped her as first officer because they couldn't envision a woman as second in command. so they dyed her hair blonde and made her a nurse.

TOV, you're to young to realize what a groundbreaking show the original series was.

or what great writing --- do you have any idea the caliber of the writer who came up with "City on the Edge of Forever"? (it was harlan Ellison, by the way).
