Star Tours and Motion Sickness?

My DS9 is just getting into Star Wars and is watching a movie per week, so he would really love the Star Tours ride with DH. However, I'm reading about it and it says "likely to cause motion sickness". Is this true? That doesn't sound like such a fun ride. How are your experiences (adult and child)?

I don't know who would say "it's likely to cause motion sickness." Yes if you are prone to motion sickness from simulators sure. But if you don't have that issue, then it won't any more than any other sim ride.

Motion sickness is a large category of issues. They basicaly fall into 3

o motion is seen but not felt (movie sickness)
o motion is felt but not seen (car sickness)
o seen and felt motion are not in sync (simulator sickness)

They all stem from the same problem, your brain getting confusing information.

The attraction is fine. I've ridden it over 25 times in a single day, and the only problem I had was boredom (my 4yo son has been wanting to ride it for 1/2 his life, so I rode it a lot one afternoon with him,)

DH is very "motion sickness challenged" and he did it once so he could see what the level of discomfort was. It was high for him so he never did it again. The rest of the family love it. I always advise trying the attraction once unless the rider is extremely sensitive. We wouldn't find a trip to WDW complete without a few Star Tours--remember there are a number of combinations to the actual Tour, so chances are you could go several times and have a different experience each time. We've only repeated a Tour once

I have 3 very motion sickness prone kids (car-driving in northwest AR from Little Rock to SW MO always had at least one kid throwing up-even when premedicated with dramamine or benadryl) and all 3 kids rode ST multiple times with no problems. They also do roller coasters with no problems-just windy roads cause issues...

I get sick on Star Tours. I'm the type that can do coasters with no trouble, but simulators & spinny things (tea cups) bother me. My advice would be to try once to see how it goes. I felt sick immediately, so I just picked a spot on the floor & stared at it for the duration of the ride. I was still queasy when I got off, but after a drink and a bit of time sitting, I was ready to go. Now I skip it and walk through the gift shops while my family rides. good luck!

The chances of a single repeated segment are high.

2 openings (Vader, Troopers)
3 Planets (Wookie, Hoth, tatooine)
3 Messages (Leia, Ackbar, Yoda)
3 Destinations (Death star, corrisant, Naboo)

The chance of getting a repeat after the first ride is high by the 3rd right you will duplicate the opening. There are 54 combinations, of 11 segments.

There are lots of scenes in the Star War movies that seem to simulate motion. I'm thinking of the one where Luke is chasing other fighters and another in the forest where Ewoks are are being chased by bad guys. And there are many more. These scenes are very close to a simulator feeling. If DS enjoys those scenes, he'll likely LOVE and do fine in Star Tours.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I thought I'd give Star Tours one more shot on our trip last year and after about 30 seconds I started to get really warm (my first trigger) and I immediately closed my eyes and stayed that way for the rest of the ride. I was fine after we got off the ride because i caught it early. The rest of my group all loved it though.

OP - I would definitely suggest letting your son try the ride at least once..especially if he's a Star Wars fan. If he starts to feel the effects of motion sickness, just do what is suggested above and either stare at the floor, or close your eyes until the ride is over. Also, and I'm not sure if they make children's dramamine, but you could always have your son try taking some medicine on the days that you'll be riding the "motion sickness prone" rides. That's what I plan to do!

I don't typically get motion sickness but Star Wars makes me very nauseous and gives me a headache. My son rides it over and over, I do 1 time and I'm done. And I LOVE Star Wars, it makes me sad.

I wouldn't chance it honestly. Motion sickness can put you out of commission for a bit and hurling in front of people is well.....yucky .

Give him half a pill of Dramamine (less drowsy) and he will be fine. I get motion sickness pretty good and I've been able to ride mission space orange with Dramamine.

Of course that's just me. Hopefully you would have a similar result.

How has your son handled Amusement parks in the past? If he hasn't had any trouble, it *probably* won't be a concern. Jco-dire wolf gave the best description of why the simulators cause problems to certain individuals (like me -- rode Body Wars, Star Tours, and Mission Space green once each; was holding down my lunch on all three!)

I'm fine on most rides, but this one makes me sick every time. Same with my brother and DH (DH was even wearing a scopolamine patch at the time) I've never actually been on this ride with anyone that didn't get at least a little sick on it, but that's just my experience.

I think it depends on whether or not you've had other problems with motion sickness. Has he gotten sick in the car or while flying or on a ship? How has he handled other amusement park rides (or the whirley go puke in the local playground). I love Star Tours and ride it once every visit, but I've never made it through a ride without getting nauseated. Usually I can stop it by staring at the floor for a minute. I won't go anywhere near the Tea Cups, but I can ride any of the coasters with no problem.

I'd let him try it once, but tell him in advance what to do at the first sign that he is getting queasy. There's every chance that he'll be fine.

ITA with this. Star Tours is a great ride and there is no need to skip it if you don't have issues with motion sickness. I am prone to motion sickness and I once rode Star Tours 6 times in one day. On our first trip it did bother me a bit, but not enough to ruin the day or cause any extended discomfort. Neither of my kids have had any issues on it.

This is a ride that makes them feel like they're flying on a spaceship inside a movie. My kids (3 & 7 on our last trip) love it. I love it. My husband loves it. It's a fun ride even if you're not a Star Wars fan, and it's a spectacular ride if you are.

If you're prone to motion sickness, you'll probably get sick on Star Tours, especially if simulators have bothered you previously. My dad, sister, and I rode it in 2000. We all became extremely sick and had to close our eyes to get through it. My sister was 13, so 4 years older than your son. My husband doesn't get motion sickness at all, and he can ride it just fine.

Star Tours made me quite nauseous. I won't do it again.

I have two kids prone to motion sickness and a husband who cannot do the carousel without getting sick. Different types of rides trigger each of us. My most motion sick one loves tea cups, but can't handle a thirty minute car trip without sea bands. Go figure. I was the only one feeling sick from Star Tours.

I would give it a try but remind him to close his eyes if he starts to feel icky. We have season passes to a local place that has a simulator ride & DH refuses to ride it. He usually does okay with one ride on Star Tours though.

Funny you mention this, this is the only ride that makes me nauseous. Any other ride I'm fine at Disney but I think it's the "simulator" ride types that don't do well for me.

Is it worth it? Eh, yes and no, the nauseousness only lasts for a short while after the ride, for me at least.
