Standby at a DLR Hotel?

My friend said that she went to the Grand Californian last year and waited by the front desk around 3 PM and got a special standby hotel rate that was over half off the normal rate. She said she had to wait till a certain time and then the front desk released the room to her at a discount...it was some kind of last minute deal.

Has anyone else ever done this before? Her details were a bit vague. Would it work at any of the three DLR hotels? Can you point me to a thread that might address it? I couldn't find one. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We are staying with my Aunt in SoCal but would love to stay on property for a night. If the hotel was completely booked or something, it wouldn't be a big deal for us.

I've never done it. I suppose it might be possible, but depending on your situation, would it be worth it to risk not getting a room? Would you be able to have a backup plan if it didn't work out? I personally wouldn't risk it, but it sounds like a good deal if you don't absolutely need a hotel room to stay at.

Sounds like someone gave her some pixie dust. I wouldn't count on it, but it never hurts to try. I'm sure it depends on what time of year and the percentage the hotel is filled. I wouldn't expect that kind of luck in the summer months. We have tried to come in a day early in the summer, and have been unable to add a day at rack rate because all 3 hotels were full.
